CUTTING>>>

GRAPHIC MATCH

JUMP CUT

Two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions slightly vary. This causes the subject of the shots to appear to "jump" position in a discontinuous way.

GENERAL TERMS>>>

CONTINUITY EDITING

Predominant style of film editing and video editing in film and television. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process; it establishes a coherence between shots.

180’ Rule

MONTAGE EDITING

Series of shots edited to condense time, space & information.

LONG TAKE & SHORT TAKE

Long: An uninterrupted shot in a film which lasts much longer than the conventional editing pace either of the film itself or of films in general. It usually lasts several minutes. It can be used for dramatic and narrative effect.

Short: Used in montage, rapid edits from shot to shot. Opposite of long take.

SLOW MOTION

Emphasises a scene...reduces the pace.

ELLIPSIS

It is an apparent break in natural time continuity as it is implied in the film's story.

EXPANSION OF TIME

The same shot can be shown from multiple angles and repeated...common in sports shots.
