“Teaching students about the world is not a subject in itself, separate from other content areas, but should be an integral part of all subjects taught. We need to open global gateways

and inspire students to explore beyond their national

borders.” Vivien Stewart, Becoming Citizens of the World, Educational Leadership

Global Competencies at the top of the list:

1. ability to communicate effectively across linguistic and cultural boundaries

2. ability to see and understand the world from a perspective other then one's own

3. ability to understand and appreciate the diversity of societies and cultures.

Essential dimensions of global competence:

• Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.

• Students recognize their own and others’ perspective.

• Students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences.

• Students translate their ideas and findings into appropriate actions to improve conditions.
