2016 Teenager Research Expedition to JAPAN!

This exciting GLEAN research expedition to JAPAN is for adventurous and curiousteenagers who have a certain taste for design and/or food. You have the unique
opportunity to explore these topics in Tokyo and Kyoto/other rural regions by developing
your own independent research project. Interested in learning more about fashion, puppet
theatre, dance, anime, ramen noodles, farming techniques, pop culture, architecture, or
ceramics? APPLY NOW!
By exploring topics relating to their core values or interests, participants will learn more about
who they are and what they'd like to do or be in this world. All research topics are feasible and
include multi- perspectives. They will receive help with this and all steps in the research
process... an invaluable skill to acquire!
Ideal candidates
This personalized expedition will accommodate only 6-12 teenagers. Depending on the
applicant pool, this expedition could be coed. Teenagers from all backgrounds and countries
may apply. We prefer a diverse group. We seek to compose a team that inspires, champions,
respects, challenges, holds a place of safety and acceptance for, and brings levity to its
members.

GLEAN USA: Head Guide for JAPAN Expedition
Head Guide
Laura Klivans has worked in education for over ten years as a teacher, facilitator, curriculum
developer, and program manager. Past experience include managing, expanding and guiding
international programs with education nonprofit World Savvy, performing/educating with Kaiser
Permanente's Educational Theatre Program, teaching in refugee camps and villages along the
Thai-Burmese border with World Education, and leading numerous trips with high school and
college-aged youth to Asia, and Central & South America. She is a self proclaimed “fellowship
and grant junkie” and has taken advantage of several of these, including the Coro Fellowship in
Public Affairs and the American Jewish World Service World Partners Fellowship. Laura has beentelling stories from a young age through theater, improvisation, sketch comedy, and writing
theater pieces based on interviews. These interests morphed over the years into a passion for
journalism, especially audio. You can hear her radio work on KQED, KALW, KALX, and others.
Laura is currently completing a master's in journalism from UC Berkeley. She has a master's in
education from Harvard University and a bachelor’s from Northwestern University.

Rossi Lamont Walter, Jr. (Dallas, TX) received his formal dance education at the Dallas Ballet
Center under the direction if Judy and Brent Klopfenstein and Thom Clower. In 2014, Rossi
graduated with a B.A. in the History of Science and in Jewish Studies from Harvard University
(Cambridge, Massachusetts), where worked in the Harvard Dance Program under the direction
of Jill Johnson (Frankfurt Ballet/Forsythe Company). Rossi has performed the works of
internationally-recognized choreographers Pontus Lidberg (Sweden), Aszure Barton (Canada),
Francesca Harper (USA) and Dwight Rhoden (USA). In 2014, Rossi received scholarships to study
the Gaga Movement Language in Tel Aviv, Israel where he was accepted to the Maslool Pre-
Professional Training Program and performed as a guest artist with the Jerusalem Dance Theater
under the direction of Lior Lev (Stuttgart Ballet). Currently, Mr. Walter dances professionally in
San Francisco with the San Rafael-based Inside Out Contemporary Ballet, to debut dances in
October 2015, and as a first-year trainee on full scholarship with the Training Program of the
internationally-renowned Alonzo King LINES Ballet. Ever curious to explore language and
culture, Mr. Walter has been educated in French, Modern Hebrew and German. In summer 2015
he began his study of Japanese in order to pursue more deeply his interest in storytelling and
emotional representation, such as in classical ballet, Japanese Butoh dance and Japanese
animation.

Lucy Pecora has been involved in GLEAN and participated in 3 GLEAN expeditions over 9 years.
In 2006 she traveled to West Africa to conduct research on West African Religion. While in Mali,
she was inspired by a group of musicians in Timbuktu who were using music to preserve
tradition story and song and to also raise awareness about current issues. The Timbuktu Music

Project was established, and Lucy returned to Mali in 2007 with GLEAN to deliver instruments
and to meet with village elders and official to continue plans for the development of the project.In 2014 Lucy acted as assistant leader on the Indian Himalaya Expedition, were she focused her
research on the pastoral nomads and herding culture of Ladakh. Lucy has participated with
GLEAN between expeditions by promoting GLEAN expeditions through public presentation,
coordinating and co-leading pre-expedition workshops, and managed travel arrangements and
protocol. She is interested in learning more about the evolution of bunraku or traditional
Japanese puppet theater.
Alternate Head Guide: Suzanne Lettrick
Suzanne Lettrick, M.Ed., Ed.M., GLEAN Founder and Director, is an educator/coach, qualitative
researcher, and social entrepreneur based in Northern California. Through her life’s work she
seeks to answer questions about human potential, fulfillment, and connection. She has helpedyouth and adults develop aligned lives so they may effectively and joyfully live, learn, work, solve
problems, collaborate, and create. Suzanne has been a classroom teacher at the Pre-K,
elementary, middle and high school (9th grade) levels as well as an enrichment educator in arts
institutions and in private homes. After completing a thesis envisioning the public learning
spaces of the future based on human physiology and neurology research--and graduating with
her second masters in education from Harvard University in May 2011-- Suzanne directed a large
study based in Jordan on the entrepreneurial mindsets and ecosystems of youth in nine Middle
Eastern and African countries. Her latest qualitative studies explore 1) Himalayan nomadic and
Tibetan Buddhist ecosystems promoting individual and community wellbeing and 2) the
development of empathy in elementary school children. She is founder of The Global Education
and Action Network (GLEAN), and precursor program Kids Studying Eurasian Nomads,providing custom-designed research expeditions and advocacy to teenagers studying global
issues and cultures since 1996 in remote regions of the world, including Mongolia, Siberia, and
Timbuktu. Her company Lettrick and Associates – Educational Strategies has provided whole
service academic coaching, consulting, and enrichment experiences to hundreds of youth and
their families. She is currently developing an integration mechanism (patent pending) that will
enable learners of all ages and regions to hone their interests and “good work” skills in practical,
real world ways. The conceptual underpinnings of her life’s work are being synthesized into a
nonfiction book currently entitled, To Learn and To Lead: Humans and their biological
connections to time, space, self and each other
