Preface
The majestic Himalaya, which breezes life into all inter-dependent
components of ecological systems and environment, needs to be
better understood and expressed through various mechanisms. In
particular, availability of „data‟ that helps in turning simple 'opinions' into
'facts' and then, analyses of such data-base point out towards present
patterns and assists in future projections. Realizing this fact, a new
publication series of "ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology" has been
initiated with an attempt to collect, collate and synthesize available data/information on
different aspects of the Indian Himalayan region (IHR).
In this context, the past and present status of various interlinked components such as
demography, socio-economy, literacy, land, water, climate, natural resources, etc. reveals
crucial cues about the past planning status, current pace of development, and future growth
prospects. In India, there exist a number of specialized government agencies and
departments which collect and compile such datasets and make them available through
various mechanisms. In these endeavors, treating each Himalayan State as one
independent entity, following compilation of datasets in a condensed volume is likely to be
more useful for a wide range of information seekers, users and stakeholders.
In the above context, "ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology" at G.B. Pant National
Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development has prepared this issue on
"Nagaland" State. This publication, sixth in its series, covers temporal trends across
important segments, e.g., Social, Education, Health and Family welfare, Climate, Land,
Water, Agriculture, Horticulture, Livestock, Forests, Minerals and Petroleum, Industry, Road
and Transport profiles, etc., which would help in policy planning and decision-making.
I am hopeful that this compendium based on secondary information would be useful
for understanding of environment and developmental status of this Himalayan State, and
cater to the need of various stakeholders. I urge the readers to provide comments and views
so as to enable us to further strengthen the forthcoming similar issues on other states of IHR.
I take this opportunity to thank all colleagues in the Institute, particularly the ENVIS team for
their valuable contribution and MoEF&CC for their generous funding support. The critical
review of this issue by readers will guide us to further improve other similar publications in
future.

From the Editorial Desk
Augmentation of authentic data base on physical, biological and socio-economic aspects of
the Himalayan mountains has always been challenging and fascinating to academicians,
researchers, planners and policy makers and implementing agencies, particularly when this
region is viewed as “data deficient” by the Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC). Authentic data base is not only important for generating fundamental knowledge but
also proves crucial for formulating policies and developmental planning. "ENVIS Centre on
Himalayan Ecology" of this Institute has been given a task by the MoEF&CC, Govt. of India
to compile such a data base for the Indian Himalayan states. Therefore, continuing with the
series of past such publications for Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu &
Kashmir, Sikkim and Uttarakhand, we have now taken up the state of „Nagaland‟ by
collecting, collating and compiling secondary data base available with various sources. In
coming years, we will bring out such publications on other states of Indian Himalayan region.
We hope that readers will find this compilation a useful reference for baseline information.
Suggestions to improve this publication series are always welcome.

About the State
The State of Nagaland was formally
inaugurated on December 1st 1963, as the
16th
State of the Indian Union. It is
bounded by Assam in the West,
Myanmar (Burma) on the East,
Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on
the North and Manipur in the South. The
State consists of seven Administrative
Districts, inhabited by 16 major tribes
along with other sub-tribes. Each tribe is
distinct in character from the other in
terms of customs, language and dress.
It is a land of folklore passed down the generations through word of mouth. Here,
music is an integral part of life; folk songs eulogising ancestors, the brave deeds of
warriors and traditional heroes; poetic love songs immortalising ancient tragic love
stories; Gospel songs that touch your soul (should you have a religious bend of mind) or
the modern tunes rendered exquisitely to set your feet a-tapping. Each of the 16 odd
tribes and sub-tribes that dwell in this exotic hill State can easily be distinguished by the
colourful and intricately designed costumes, jewellery and beads that they adorn. The
present generations of Nagas have ventured into fashion designing in a big way,
reproducing fabrics that represent the ancestral motifs blended with modern appeal.
Indeed, it is a beautiful mix of the past with the present, a paradise for those who are into
fashion designing. This is an affluent fashion station of the East.
The traditional ceremonial attire of each tribe is in itself, an awe inspiring sight to
behold; the multicoloured spears and daos decorated with dyed goats hair, the headgear
made of finely woven bamboo interlaced with orchid stems, adorned with boar's teeth
and hornbill's feathers, elephant tusk armlets. In days of yore every warrior had to earn
each of these items through acts of valour, to wear them. Nature could not have been
kinder to Nagaland, sometimes referred to as the Switzerland of the East; the exquisitely
picturesque landscapes, the vibrantly colourful sunrise and sunset, lush and verdant flora,
this is a land that represents unimaginable beauty, moulded perfectly for a breath taking
experience.
ii
Its people belong to the Indo-Mongoloid stock, whose ancestors lived off nature's
abundant gifts, blessed with sturdy formidable dispositions. Above all, the people here
are warmhearted and extremely hospitable. Nagaland is blessed with salubrious climate
throughout the year and one can visit it anytime. If one is looking for a quiet getaway,
from the hustle and bustle of city life, it provides the right ambience; as life here is
laidback and slow - providing a tension free life. For the adventurous and the intrepid,
Nagaland is an ideal place for trekking, rock climbing, jungle camping and offers
limitless exploration possibilities in its lush and verdant sub-tropical rain forests which
are also a treasure trove of a plethora of medicinal plants. Nagas, by nature, are lovers of
fun and frolic and here life is one long festival. The Nagas with their joie de vivre, dance
and songs are a part and parcel of all their festivities. Most of heir dances are performed
with a robust rhythm.
Agriculture has traditionally been and continues to be the mainstay of Naga life-the
numerous festivals are centered on agriculture and have their roots in cultivation
practices. Seventy-three percent of the people in Nagaland are engaged in agriculture.
Rice is the staple food. It occupies about 70 percent of the total cultivated area and
constitutes about 75 percent of the total food grain production in the State. Other crops
include maize, linseed, potato, pulses, soya bean, sugarcane, jute, gram, cotton, castor,
etc. However, like most of the world's tribal population, the production system in
Nagaland has been close to proto-agriculture, which has enabled close links between
nature and people from Generation to generation.
The forest cover is 80.49 percent of the total area of Nagaland. As such, forests
represent the richest natural resource of the State. Nagaland is also very rich in
biodiversity with abundance of animal, insect and plant species. The State has a wealth of
herbal, medicinal and aromatic plants with tremendous economic potentials.

ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology at the G.B. Pant National Institute of
Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD) was
established in 1992-93 with the financial support from the Ministry of
Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India,
New Delhi. The Centre is collecting, collating, compiling and building
quantitative and qualitative databases of information related to various
aspects of Himalayan Ecology. Through print/electronic media, the Centre is
regularly disseminating all available information, free of cost, to various
stakeholders/users, which include all District Information Centres (working
in the Himalayan states of the country), ENVIS Centres of the MoEF&CC
Universities, Research Centers, Engineering Colleges, Govt. Institutions,
NGOs and experts/individuals working in the Indian Himalayan Region
(IHR). The main mandate of the Centre is to spread environmental
awareness and help research and development in areas related to Himalayan
Ecology.
