July 19, 2020 | Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
WELCOME
PAGE 02 | SUNDAY, JULY 19, 2020
DEAR SISTERS AND
BROTHERS IN CHRIST,
I am deeply grateful for all of your
prayers and condolences upon the
passing away of Bishop Edward U.
Kmiec. I had the privilege of serving
as Bishop Kmiec’s Priest Secretary
from the day he was installed as the
13th Bishop of Buffalo in October of
2004 until he retired in 2012.
Bishop Kmiec became a part of my
family and we spent a great deal of
time together during his retirement
at St. Joseph Cathedral. He became
my “spiritual” father and taught me
much about what it means to be a
priest and to have a priestly heart.
His Episcopal Motto was “Charity
and Service.” That is exactly the way
he lived his life—with a heart of
charity and dedicated and selfless
service to God and the Church.
After he passed away last Saturday
evening, I found his Mass Book
where he recorded all the Masses
he said since the day he was
ordained a priest at St. Peter’s
Basilica in Rome on December 20,
1961 until June 7, 2020, totaling
21,381 Masses! The bookmark was
an index card on which he penned
this quote from Romans 12:12:
“Rejoice in hope,
Be patient under trial,
Persevere in prayer.”
I believe that was not only a
message for me, but one I needed
to share with you, my dear
parishioners!
Please continue to remember the
peaceful repose of Bishop Kmiec’s
soul in your prayers and Mass
intentions and know that he will be
watching over you and praying for
you as well.
Eternal rest grant unto him,
O Lord, and let perpetual light
shine upon him. May he rest in
peace and may his soul and the
souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace. Amen!
I also want to share some wonderful
news with you and a message from
Deacon Steve Schumer, President
and CEO of Catholic Charities of
Buffalo. As of June 30, 2020, our
diocese completed the 2020
Catholic Charities Appeal. This
year’s goal for Our Lady of Victory
National Shrine & Basilica Parish
was $91,000.00. You, our
outstanding parishioners, raised a
total of $123,445.78! We surpassed
our goal by a total of $32,455.78
which was raised by 296 generous
donors! In these very challenging
and difficult times, that is absolutely
amazing! I am deeply grateful to all
who contributed.
Here are the two messages from
Deacon Steve Schumer that he sent
to me:
Dear Monsignor LiPuma,
Thank you for all you and your
parishioners do to make a
difference in the lives of others
through your faithful support of the
2020 Appeal benefitting Catholic
Charities and the Fund for the Faith.
Your parish team provided
invaluable assistance to the Appeal
and we are so very grateful. May we
ask that you place the enclosed
notice in your bulletin? Please
know of our prayers for continued
blessings on you and the parish
faith community.
Enclosed Message:
Congratulations on achieving
Gold Star status for Appeal 2020.
Receiving a Gold Star means you
exceeded your 2020 goal, and we
are so very grateful! In an
unprecedented year, you went
above and beyond. So many
individuals and families will be
supported, empowered and find
wholeness because of your
generosity. The leaders and staff
of Appeal 2020 offer their sincere
appreciation and thanks!
Peace and blessings,
Deacon Steve Schumer
On behalf of OLV Parish, I want to
offer my sincere thanks and
deepest appreciation to our Appeal
Parish Chair, Mrs. Maureen A.
Gannon, and our Appeal Parish
Gift Chair, Mr. Brenden J. Gannon,
for their exemplary leadership in
helping us to exceed our goal
and thus help to make a positive
difference in the lives of those
who live on the margins of life. God
bless all of you, our wonderful
donors and benefactors! I am very
humbled and honored to serve
as your pastor. May Father Baker
intercede for you and Our Lady of
Victory… protect you!
GRATEFULLY, FR. DAVID

ACT OF SPIRITUAL
COMMUNION
My Jesus,
I believe that You are
present in the Most Holy
Sacrament of the altar.
I love You above all
things, and I desire to
receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this
moment receive You
sacramentally, come at
least spiritually into my
heart.
I embrace You as if You
were already there and
unite myself wholly to
You. Never permit me to
be separated from You.
Amen.

WEDDING
CONGRATULATIONS
Patrick M. McParlane and
Brigitte Cellino were married at
Our Lady of Victory Basilica at
1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 11,
2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
we have made the difficult
decision to move our time-honored
tradition of the Father Baker Day
Mass and Reception from July
(the anniversary of Father Baker’s
death) to Sunday, September 6,
2020 at Noon. This year, we will also
be combining that celebration with
our “Pennies to Heaven” Fundraiser
and Family BBQ.
You are invited to begin collecting
your pennies (and larger coins!) for
the tradition of dropping coins to
cover the sidewalk in front of the
Basilica, which will take place
before and after the Noon Mass.
Following Mass, from 1—6 p.m.,
there will also be a take-out
Master’s chicken BBQ dinner
available, along with chances to
win two raffle baskets. Presale
dinner tickets, as well as
sponsorship opportunities, are
currently available online. Please
visit penniestoheaven.org for more
information or to place an order.
Dinner tickets are $12 presale until
August 25 and $15 after August 25.
Please watch future bulletins for
additional event details as they
become available.
First Communion practice will be
Wednesday, July 29th at 6:30 p.m.
in the Basilica.
Due to social distancing, we ask
that each child have only one adult
with them and all people must
wear masks. Thank you in advance
for your cooperation.
Confirmation registration will be
mailed out soon. Please contact
our office at 828-9437 if you have
a child who will be entering 10th
Grade in September.
What can you do to spread a little
kindness in our community and
yourself??
 Call someone who is self-
isolating, just for a chat.
 Be present with everyone you
interact with.
 Do something that makes you
laugh out loud.
Speak only kind words to others.
 Buy yourself some flowers;
you’re worth it!
Take 10 minutes just for yourself.
Don’t be afraid to reach out and
ask for help if you need it.
In a world where you can be
anything, be kind. Kindness
changes EVERYTHING!

SCHOOL NEWS

OUR LADY OF VICTORY
SCHOOL : “THE START
OF SOMETHING GREAT!”
What are a few of the
many things an education
at OLV will give your child?
Here at Our Lady of Victory School
we aim to create a strong bond
among our students, their homes,
our school, and our church in an
effort to build an active, supportive
community. Our school and church
work in partnership with our
families in helping to advance
students academically, morally, and
spiritually. As a result, our students
understand their special place
within society and are ready to step-
up to model the challenge of being
a better person in today’s world.
An OLV Education encourages a
spiritual view of the world.
We focus on more than the
standard subjects taught in public
schools; we also focus on religious,
moral, and spiritual development.
Community sense of self sacrifice
We work together to put an extra
emphasis on community service
and ministries in support of the
church. OLV challenges students
to give back in their communities,
and we expect students to lead
by example and to
show care and
concern for others.
OLV has an active
service club and
children in grades
Pre-k through 8 are
engaged in yearly
service projects.
Self-discipline
We are committed
to the formation of
sound character,
teaching students
the value of self-
discipline and self-
respect. We put a
strong emphasis on teaching
students to be accountable for
their own actions.
Exposure beyond the basics
OLV has a strong program that
provides unmatched arts and
science programs that teach coding
and computer science, literature,
and music, providing students the
chance to expand their knowledge
and skills beyond basic curriculum.
Welcoming environment
At Our Lady of Victory, we teach
that each person is unique and
valuable, and that we must all be
accepting of others. Not all
students who attend our school are
Catholic; all are welcomed into our
caring and loving community.
Come check out our wonderful
school. We have so much more to
offer. We are currently accepting
applications for fall enrollment.
Please call the school office at
828-9435 for more information.
