Genres
Horror Stories that intend to scare, unnerve, or
appall the reader.
Fantasy Stories that contain elements that are NOT
realistic, such as talking animals, magical powers, etc. Make-believe is what this genre is all about.
Historical Fiction Stories which take place in a particular
time period in the past. Often the basic setting is real, but the characters are fictional.
Manga Japanese comic books. Manga is often
made into Japanese cartoons, or Anime. The art in Manga has a very definite look to it and is often referred to as “Manga Style.”
Science Fiction Stories which include futuristic technology;
a blend of scientific fact and fictional elements.
Vampires Stories concerned largely with the subject
of vampires.
Poetry Verse and rhythmic writing with imagery
that creates emotional responses. It may or may not be written with rhymes. They are often read aloud.
Fairy Tales The characters are make believe. There
may be magical elements. They often begin with "Once upon a time" and end with "they lived happily ever after." Good usually versus evil.
Mystery/Suspense The characters are usually fictional but they
behave in realistic ways. There is a problem that needs to be solved. A mystery may have a detective or a spy as a main character. Clues are used by characters to find a solution to the mystery.
Sports & Leisure The story is fictional but with the main
character(s) having a strong emphasis on sports &/or leisure activities. Can either be about playing or watching a particular sport
High School/Realistic Fiction The characters behave in realistic ways
and are placed in a realistic, high school setting. There is usually a problem or conflict to be solved. The setting is in modern times.
