The 2008 season is one that could prove to be a turningpoint in the history of the University of Maryland’s women’ssoccerprogram.

“Wehavebeenwaitingforpre-seasonsincetheendof2007,”saysfourth-yearheadcoachBrianPensky.“Everyonereturningknowshowgoodwecanbe.Ourdefensehasalwaysbeenastrengthandweexpectthattocontinue.Withthecombinationofourreturningplayersandourincomingfreshmen,wewillbemuch-improvedintheattackingendofthefield.”

Pensky’sconfidencecouldstemfromoneglanceathisroster,whichboaststalent,skilland,perhapsmostimportantly,depth.

“Ourdepthwillbesignificantlybetterthisfall,”saysPensky.“Wearegoingtohavesomefabulouscompetitionforanumberofpositionsonthefield.Forplayers,thisisabitscary,however,weknowthecompetitionwillbringoutthebestineachindividual.”

Howallofthosefactorswilladdupattheendoftheseasonisanyone’sguess,butPenskyknowswhatheexpectsfromhissquadthisyear.“Weexpecttosurprisepeoplethisfall.ThereisnoreasonwhyweshouldnotbebackintheACCandNCAATournaments.Wehavethetalentanddepth-nowit’sallofourjobstoproduce.”

years, but Pensky and his coaching staff have addressedthat concern throughsomeposition changesandaggressiverecruiting.

ReturningforMarylandattheforwardpositionisseniorKailaSciascia,whohadatremendousoff-seasonandseemstohavefoundanew“killerinstinct”forfinishinghershots.SophomoreAnnesiaFaulknershowedalotofskillandtenacityduringherinitialseasonasaTerpandisexpectedtobeanevengreatercontributorinhersecondseason.Herblue-collarwork-ratewillcertainlyfactorintheTerps’success.

LaurenGamble isa fifth-yearseniorwhowillbecalled upon to contribute as she returns fromACLsurgery.

Juniors Maureen Dowling and StephanieMacCormackareeachmovingtoforwardforthisseason.Dowlingspentherfirsttwoseasonsasa wide midfielder, while MacCormack playedas a wide back last year. They bothcan impact a game immediately- Dowling with her pace andleft foot; and MacCormackwith her energy andintensity.

Addtothatmix,thereturnofMollyDreska,whomissedtheentire2007seasonduetoinjury.Beforesufferingakneeinjuryneartheendofthe2006season,DreskawasoneoftheACC’stopfreshmen.Nowfullyrecovered,sheispreparedtopushforplayingtimeandmakeanimpactfortheTerps.

Another contributor for playing time at attacking centermidfieldissophomoreErikaTheisen.

Shelley McDuff, who started all 36 games the last twoseasons, anchored the defensive center midfield spot, buthas now graduated. Looking to replace her is a quartet ofnewcomers,someofwhocouldalsofindrolesinothermidfieldspots.MeganWatson,ajuniortransferfromtheUniversityofPittsburgh,started31gamesinhertwoseasonsasaPanther.TheversatileBeckyKaplanisoneofthetop75recruitsinthecountryaccordingtoSoccer Buzz;whileskillfulAmyO’SullivanandKristenMcAfeewillalsocompete forprominentroles incentralmidfield.

“Wefeelgreataboutourcentralmidfield,”saysPensky.“WehaveexperienceinNat,Caitlin,MollyandMegan;andexcitingyoung talent inTheisen,Kaplan,O’SullivanandMcAfee.Wehavelotsofoptions.”

started every game during herTerrapin career. But the restofMaryland’sdefensereturns intact–MalloryBaker,AimeeBresani,BrittanyCumminsandMaryCasey.ThisgroupgivesPenskyaveteranpresenceinthebackline,whichwillallowhisteamtopushforwardintheoffensivethird.

“Wereturnqualityplayersfromlastyear’sbackline,”saysPensky. “Mary,Aimee, Brittany and Mallory are all poised tocontinue theMaryland traditionofkeeping theballoutof thebackofthenet.”

Casey,whowasrecruitedasagoalkeeperandwillbetheteam’sbackupatthatposition,hasmaturedintooneofthebestdefendersintheACC,whichiswidelyregardedasthenation’stopwomen’ssoccerconference.

Headliningthis freshmenattackinggroup isHastings,whoenrolledatMarylandthispastJanuaryandwaswiththeteamduringitsspringseason.Shehasalsobeeninvitedtothepastthree US U18 NationalTraining Camps and was the team’sleadingscorerduringitsEuropeanTourinJune.Mostrecently,HastingswasinvitedintoaUSU20NationalCamp.AyindehasalsoparticipatedinmultipleU18trainingcampsasbothaforwardanddefender.AyindeandAndersonwerelistedasaTop50and100recruit,respectively,bySoccer Buzz.

“Returning Kaila,Annesia, Lauren, Mo and Steph fromlastyearisarealplus,”saysPensky.“Andtheadditionofthefreshmenshouldgiveus theability tobea fast-paced,high-

“Yewande will be our starting goalkeeper this fall,” saysPensky. “Her tactical growth has been tremendous over thecourseof thisyear,andherability to lead in thebackwillbemuch-improvednowthatsheisasophomore,andhas21starts(includingthespringseason)underherbelt.”

“AsI’vesaid,weexpecttobeintheACCandNCAATournaments, and this schedule should prepare us not

onlytomakethosetournaments,but tosucceedinthem,aswell.”

AfterhostingapreseasonscrimmagesagainstGeorgetownandWestVirginia,whichwerealso2007tournamentteams,theTerpsopenthe2008seasonwithfivestraighthomegamesatLudwigFieldagainstGeorgeMason(Aug.23),Bucknell(Aug.29),Elon(Aug.31),American(Sept.5)andTemple(Sept.7).

MarylandhitstheroadandheadstoCharlottesville,Va.,fortheVirginiaSoccerClassic.TheretheTerpswillfaceDartmouthonSept.12and2007NCAAtournamentparticipantWilliam&MaryonSept.14.

Maryland then returns to College Park for its final non-conferencegameaSept.21meetingwithMountSt.Mary’s.

TheACCschedulekicksoffwithatripdown“TobaccoRoad”andaSept.25gameatWakeForest.TheTerpsthenheadEasttoChapelHill,N.C.,totackleNorthCarolinaonSept.28.

From there Maryland returns home for four consecutivegamesinCollegePark.TheTerpshosttheSeminoles(Oct.2),Miami(Oct.5),Duke(Oct.12)andVirginia(Oct.16)overthe14-dayhomestand.

TheTerpsthenfacethree-straightroadconferencegamesbeginningwithatriptoBlacksburg,Va.,forameetingwithVirginiaTechonOct.19.MarylandwillheadNorthtoChestnutHill,Mass.,foranOct.23meetingwithBostonCollege,thenwrapsupitsroadscheduleonOct.26atNCState.

The2008 regular season concludeswith “SeniorDay” onOctober30againstClemson.

TheACCTournamentwillbeheldonNov.5-9inCary,N.C.,atWakeMedSoccerPark.The2008NCAATournamentwillbeginonNov.14withthefirstthreeroundsbeingheldatcampussites.The2008CollegeCupisbeinghostedbyNCStateatWakeMedSoccerParkinCary,N.C.ThesemifinalsaresetforDecember5,withthefinalstakingplaceonDec.7.

Returningdepth in thebackwillcome fromseniorMandyPaizsandsophomoresColleenDeeganandChelseaSprague.FreshmanCarlyLengeristheonlynaturaldefenderinthisyear’sfreshmenclass.NewcomersthatcouldalsocompeteforplayingtimeinthebackareAyinde,Watson,andAnderson.

“SolidspringseasonsfromMandy,ColleenandChelseahaveput theminpositions to trulycompete this fall,”saysPensky.“Sade,Megan,andSkyywillchallengeinthebackaswell.”

OliviaOnyeador isanothersophomoredefender,butshewill redshirt this season after suffering an injury during thespringseason.

for three years, helping them to College Cup appearanceseveryseason.

This season, Pensky landed his second-straightTop 20recruiting class, according to Soccer Buzz.The class, whichcheckedinatNo.14nationally,thesecond-highestrankingeverforaTerps'recruitingclass,andsecondintheMid-Atlanticregionisanchoredbyfourtop150players.SadeAyindeisranked34th,whileBeckyKaplan,SkyyAndersonandLydiaHastingsarealsoamongthetop150.AyindeandHastinghavebothbeeninvitedtoseveralU.S.U18campsandhaveexcelled.HastingswastheU.S.'sleadingscorerwiththreegoalsattheU18Women'sNationalTeamForeignTrainingCampinEurope.

The2007seasonwasoneofimprovementforPensky'sTerpsas Maryland battled one of the nation's toughest schedules.Threetimesin2007theTerpsdroppedadecisioninovertimetoanationally-rankedopponent,showingthatMarylandiscapableofcompetingwiththenation'selite.TheTerrapinsweredefinedbyatenaciousdefensethatallowedjust20goalsontheyeardespite

During his first two seasons with thewomen’s soccer team, Pensky’s squadshave been ravaged by injuries, but histeams have consistently been one ofthe toughest defensive teams in thecountry. The Terps were secondintheACC,thenation'stoughestwomen'ssoccerconference,ingoalsagainstin2006.

In the last two seasons,Pensky’s squad continuedoneofthelegaciesoftheprogram – knocking offtop-10 teams. InsevenofthelasteightseasonstheTerpshavedefeateda teamranked in the top10. In 2005, Marylanddefeated No. 8 BostonCollege, 2-1, in the regular-season finale to secure a trip totheACCTournament.LastseasonsawMarylanddefeat10th-rankedTennessee, 1-0, in the seasonopener.TheTerpsalsodefeatedNo. 11 Virginia 2-0 in their finalhomecontestof2006.

In addition, Pensky helpedmentor two-timefirst teamAll-ACCgoalkeeperNikkiResnickand2005All-ACC midfielder Kimmy Francis.Resnick finished her career secondon Maryland’s career lists in saves(353)andshutouts(19.0),whileFrancisis third in career points (67), sixth incareer goals (22) and fourth in careerassists(23).

Penskyhasalsobeeninvolvedwith the Maryland girls’ Olympic

DevelopmentProgramteamsince1997.He served as an assistant coach for the

Under-15 team from 1999-2000, helping thatsquadtothe1999RegionIchampionshipandanationalrunner-upfinishin2000.

Inthespringof2000,hetookoverasheadcoachof theU16teamand led it toaregionalchampionship.In2001,heworkedwiththeU16ODPteamandfinishedastheregionalrunner-up.Penskyspentthesummerof2001coachingtheW-League’sMarylandPride,whichreachedtheFinalFourandwontheEasternConferencechampionship.

He began his coaching career at the BullisSchoolinPotomac,Md.,wherehelaterwenton

to teach and eventually piloted the boys’ soccerteamfrom1996-98.WhileattheBullisSchool,hewasnamed1997HighSchoolCoachoftheYearbytheMarylandLedgerandpacedthe18-1-1IACchampionstoaNo.13rankinginthenation.

In addition to his college and high schoolcoachingexperience,PenskycoachedtheBethesdaSoccerClubfrom1991-99.

Penskyholdsabachelor’sdegreeineconomicsfromEmoryUniversity,aswellasan“A”licensefrom

PellscametoMarylandafterspendingtheprevioussixyearsasanassistantcoachatClemson.Duringthattime,theLadyTigers reached the NCAA tournament each year, includingthe2006EliteEightandthe2001Sweet16andaNo.11finalranking.

Clemson'sdefensewasoutstandingwhilePellscoachedthegoalkeepers.Duringhersixseasonsthere,Clemsonregistered53teamshutoutsandallowedjustoveronegoalpermatch.

Pells graduated with a master's degree from the Collegeof New Jersey in the spring of 2001 from the School ofCounseling.
