What is Gifted and Talented Education? In 1961, the California Legislature established the

Mentally Gifted Minor (MGM) program for students scoring in the 98th percentile or above on standardized intellectual ability tests.

By 1980 California established the GATE program allowing districts to set their own criteria for entrance.

In 2000, Ed. Code requiring that GATE programs be planned and organized as differentiated learning experiences within the regular school day.

What is Gifted and Talented Education

(G.A.T.E)

Provides greater depth and complexity with appropriate pacing of the core curriculum

Develop and appreciation for learning and a value for intellectual development

Characteristics of gifted children Bright Child

Knows the answers Has good ideas Works hard Listens with interest Enjoys peers Copies accurately Is pleased with own learning

Characteristics of gifted children Gifted Learner

Asks the questions Has wild, silly ideas Plays around, yet tests well Shows strong feeling and opinion Prefers adults Creates new design Is highly self-critical

Product Contracts

One Product from each of the following curricular areas

English/Language Arts/Technology History/Social Studies/Geography Science/Math

These are not additional assignments

Student Products Student’s highest level of productivity is

reflected in the complexity and thinking level of the final product.

Should be creative and multi-dimensional and reflective of differentiated classroom instruction.

Student should feel the product represents his/her “best” classroom work
