Wow, what a Great Race at our member workshop.
The Jelly Roll Race had a First Place Winner, Marsha Meeks, who
crossed the finish line at 1 hour and seven minutes. Congratulations on
your quick quilt!
A lots of tops were completed and each looked very different.
At our May 3rd meeting, Deborah Burkett will present her “Quilts and
Their Story”. She is an educator and author, she will wrap us up into
quilting history. She started the famous quilt show, “Aunt Lillie’s
Annual Fourth of July Show” in Troup, TX. Her lecture, “Quilts and
Their Story”, will show how quilts bind generations together. Her
collection of quilts will speak out to you.
The summer has a loaded bases line-up of lectures, activities and
workshops. At the June 7th meeting, Deborah Brizendine shares her
“Quilter’s Journey”. You can hit a home run by taking her paper
piecing workshop on June 11, 2016. The project is a paper pieced
placemat and the pattern is a Judy Niemeyer pattern. The class is filling
up so stop by and sign up. Fee is $45.
On July 5th, we will have the opportunity to view and get inspired by the creative Hoffman
Challenge winners. We will have a bed-turning / trunk show including blue ribbon quilts
including “Gypsy Dancer” and “Garden Stars”. Quilts include international quilts, modern
quilts, and all type of construction methods. It definitely is a show stopping collection.
Alice Wilhoit will be our August 2nd speaker and show us her “Light
Hearted Trunk Show”. Her applique workshop follows on August 6th.

Dig deep and find an orphan UFO in the closet and dust it off. Adding one stitch, then another
and then another eventually yields a completed quilt. By pushing ourselves to finish it, we will
get a little closer to knowing what we are made of. Happy quilting.

I regret to announce that the raffle quilt did not win a ribbon this year at the Dallas Quilt Show.
The competition was fierce. You can see some of the competitors at Rally Day.
There are beautiful raffle quilts this year, and some will be visiting our meetings. I encourage
you to support them by purchasing tickets.
Speaking of ticket sales, our tickets will be distributed at the May meeting. There will be sales
opportunities to sign up for. We sold 1,950 tickets in 2015. We have ordered 2,250 tickets this
year. Let’s sell out and reorder! The profits from ticket sales enable us to donate to the church
and have speakers and workshops. Let the ticket sales begin!!

Barbara Colson had surgery 4-13. After a few days in the hospital she will go to Rehab for a
few days. We know she is relieved to finally have this long awaited surgery.
Janile Heldenbrand had her second surgery recently and has some follow-up treatment
scheduled.
Marsha Meeks is still consulting with doctors and looking at her treatment and surgery options.
Remember the members of our Guild who are at home with illnesses. They are greatly missed!
Sunshine – Roxanne Garrettt’s daughter Merritt Rehn-DeBraal earned a Doctorate of
Philosophy and was also awarded Humanities Dissertation of the Year 2016! Roxanne will be
traveling to watch Merritt ‘walk’!
Sounds like there is going to be a bumper crop of grandbabies soon. Keep us posted so we can
share your Good News!

New Banners for Our Host Church
In appreciation for the generosity and cordiality the First Presbyterian Church has shown our
Guild, a committee has been formed to make new banners, following the liturgical year seasons,
as suggested by the church pastor. Marsha Meeks has organized the committee, and volunteer
banner-makers include Jean Blalock, Suzy Boyle, Evelyn Brown, Carla Byrom and Mary Jo
Ferril. Dana Dunlap will serve the committee as church liaison and advisor.
Right now, the committee members are deciding their season and designing their banners. All
banners will be completed in 2016, and we will show the finished products to the Guild in Show
and Tell!

PATRIOTIC WALL HANGING OR TABLE RUNNER
EXCHANGE
The Garland Quilt Guild will have a Patriotic Wall Hanging or Table runner Exchange at the
July 5th Meeting. Make any kind of patriotic item that you would like to receive yourself and
bring it to the July 5th meeting to exchange. We will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for the
exchange to be voted on by the membership. If you bring a Wall Hanging or Table Runner,
you will be taking another one home made by a member of the Guild. It will be great fun to see
what everyone comes up with and you will have something new to grace your home with for the
holiday.

All of our flowers should be blooming from the April showers and I bet with our talent pool of
awesome quilters those flowers are jumping onto beautiful quilts!
I want to thank everyone for their contributions to our refreshment table. I know we don't always
have what you would prefer but remember we have what our members bring. If there is
something you would prefer we invite you to bring it along. This month we don't have many
May birthdays so we ask the members who have December birthdays in May.
Please stop and thank the wonderful ladies that are helping me in the kitchen. They have been
coming in and offering to help and I really appreciate it.
I also want to thank everyone for emptying liquids out of their cups before discarding their cups
as it makes it so much easier to get bags into dumpster. Great job helping get the hall in order
after our meeting. Our wonderful President, Suzy Boyle, would love to have help setting hall up
before each meeting.
May and December birthdays are:
Dorris Albin(D), Denise Bartosh (M), Jeanne Blalock(D), Sheryl Chenault(M), Jon Ferril
(D), Paula Foster(D), Lonetta Ingram (D), Deborah Kanavel (M), Charlotte Kingsley (D),

Sack Lunch Ministry
The demand for the church’s sack lunches has grown
tremendously, with the church now giving away about
35 lunches a week to the homeless or the hungry. The following is the list of items for the sack
lunch ministry operated by our facility location host, First Presbyterian Church. Just pack the
lunches in a small brown paper sack with non-perishable items, such as:
canned tuna or chicken salad
peanut butter and crackers
cheese and crackers
chips
fruit cup
cookies
pudding
You may also include a drink (although not necessary) as well as a napkin and spoon. Items should
not require a can opener. Bottled water is also much appreciated... You can find many of these
items at a Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Wal-Mart, etc.
The church also collects pancake mix and syrup. We also have a tip jar at the sign-in table, and
if everyone were to throw in their loose change we could donate a great deal to the church each
month. Thank you so much!
The Garland Quilt Guild Meets at the following location:
First Presbyterian Church 930 West Avenue B
Garland, TX 75040
Corner of 9th and Avenue B
The first Tuesday of each month at 7pm.
Find us online at:
www.garlandquiltguild.com ~also visit us on Facebook~
Executive Board meetings are held on the Tuesday
following the regular Guild meeting at 7:00pm at the church
Please note that if the Garland or Dallas Independent Schools are closed for inclement weather, the Guild will not have their scheduled meeting. Our members’ safety is very important to us.
