Thank you to ALL who helped with our parish wide Share-a-Christmas program by donating, sorting,
and delivering hundreds and hundreds of gifts. Every scroll taken and returned was a gift in someone’s
hand. God only knows how many hearts have been touched by this generosity and love.

taneously in the church and in the MPR. We especially are mind-
ful of making this Mass meaningful for our children. They are
asked to bring baby gifts which we will give to Birthright in
honor of the Infant Jesus’ birth. I think you know that both
Masses are overcrowded in the parking lot and in the church and
MPR. It may be very wise to choose another less crowded cele-
bration if at all possible. Also on Christmas Eve we celebrate
Masses in the church at 6:00 and 8:00 pm. Both are very beauti-
ful liturgies. Our Midnight Mass is at midnight (you would be
amazed at how many calls we get asking what time midnight
Mass is), and it is preceded by an hour of Christmas Candlelight
Caroling at 11 pm by our very gifted music ministry. This is
such a beautiful preparation for Mass and a wonderful way to be
immersed into the spirit of Christ’s birth. We are so blessed by
our music ministry who provide such beautiful music at all our
liturgies. On Christmas Day we will celebrate Masses at the
regular Sunday morning times of 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30. These
Masses are very peaceful, prayerful, and much less crowded than
Christmas Eve. I strongly encourage you to consider coming on
Christmas day for a variety of reasons. Many have, and have
commented on how nice it made their Christmas day. No matter
what, we are very happy to welcome each and every person who
comes home to celebrate our Savior’s birth. Please go out of
your way both in the parking lot and in the church to make eve-
ryone feel welcome. You never know how your spirit of hospi-
tality could make a difference for people who may not be used to
coming. There is NOT a 5:00 pm Mass on Christmas Day, nor
will there be Eucharistic Adoration or Night Prayer. We will
have a 5:00 pm Mass on New Year’s Day, but again we will not
have Adoration afterwards. After that, starting January 8th, we
will resume our normal Sunday evening schedule of Mass, Ado-
ration, Night Prayer and Benediction.
When Christmas falls on a Sunday we actually ask for two finan-
cial offerings - one for Sunday, and a special gift for Christmas.
Both are very important for us to maintain our budget, which is
based on 52 Sundays of the year in addition to Christmas day. I
will leave it up to your generosity and only say thank you for
whatever you are able to give. My prayer is that your offering is
always, and especially at Christmas, a gift of gratitude for all that
God has blessed you with. God is so good to us. Let us do our
very best to enable God’s work to continue and grow through all
the efforts of our parish. We can only do what you enable us to
do. Thank you for your generosity.
Make the most of this week. God is with us always. Don’t ever
lose sight of that no matter how much there is left to do. May the
peace and joy of the coming Lord fill your lives and enable you
to Be the Light. See you for Christmas.
In God’s love,
My Sisters and Brothers,
Rare is the year when the Fourth Week of Advent is an entire
week. This year with Christmas falling on a Sunday, we have a
whole week to prepare. Next year is another story. In 2017 the
Fourth Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve, but we will
cross that bridge when we come to it. The challenge this week is
to make the most of this last week of preparation - not only with
all the last minute shopping and Christmas prep, but especially
with what it means to truly “prepare the way of the Lord”. Our
Gospel this weekend gives us a very special word that is the key
to not only making the most of this week, but making the most of
every week, and that word is Emmanuel, which means “God is
with us”. Imagine that as you are shopping or wrapping presents,
cleaning the house or preparing for various holiday celebrations,
or perhaps finding a quiet place and a bit of silence, if we could
be more aware that “God is with us”. It changes the meaning of
what we do, the way in which we do it, and even just how im-
portant certain customs and traditions may be. My belief is that it
will make everything we do much more meaningful and our en-
tire Christmas celebration much more peaceful and ultimately
fulfilling. In most people’s lives there usually exists some degree
of turmoil. Perhaps things aren’t going the way we had anticipat-
ed or planned. Things happen that are out of our control that
change the course of our lives. Often we feel we just don’t have
the answers or solutions to what life may be asking of us. The
person we are given this weekend is Joseph. Talk about a person
whose life had been turned upside down and whose questions had
very few logical answers. God spoke to Joseph in a dream. I am
not sure we fully understand just how God spoke, but I suspect it
was not a whole lot different than how God speaks to each of us.
The point is, Joseph was listening. He obviously believed and
trusted that God was with him. Even though the explanation he
received did not make logical sense to him, since it came from
God, it evidently was enough for him. Often it is only in time that
we come to know God’s plans - little by little, step by step. What
is required is trust, patience, perseverance, and the courage to
allow God to show us the way. So, these are my thoughts for this
last week of Advent. Look to Joseph’s example and never lose
sight that God is with us always. Celebrate and live the meaning
of EMMANUEL!
It was so good for us to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation
last Monday evening as a community. We were blessed to have
twelve priests to hear Confessions and to celebrate the sacrament
as a community. I am grateful and inspired by all the people who
made this a part of their Advent preparation. This coming week
we have two additional times, Monday at 11:30 am and Wednes-
day at 7:00 pm. We only have the three of us, so I hope that you
try your best in the future not to wait til the last minute. Howev-
er, if you do choose to come this week, we will be here and
happy to share God’s love and forgiveness with you.
Next Sunday is Christmas. Other than it falling on a Sunday, our
Christmas Mass schedule remains the same as it has been. The
4:00 Mass on Saturday, Christmas Eve, will be celebrated simul-

Confirmation Candidates: The holiday season is a very special time when many family and friends gather to cel-ebrate and share the magic of the season. Be
sure to take some time over the holidays
to consider choosing your sponsor. All sponsors need to obtain a Sponsor Certificate from their parish, so if you are choosing a sponsor who is usually away at college or someone you will see over the holi-days, now is the time to ask! Sponsor certificates can be turned in at the parish office.
Sponsors must be 16 years of age, have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and if married, they need to have been married in the Catholic Church.
Our next Confirmation session takes place on Sunday,
January 8th . All Sponsor Certificates are due at this meeting along with any outstanding paperwork and fees. We will begin with 5 PM Mass and head over to the MPR for our session from 6-7:45 PM. Please be sure to bring your Decision Point book! Just a reminder, spon-sors are required to complete Decision Point Sessions 5 and 6 with their candidate by January 22nd.

The budget detail is expanded to clarify the major com-ponents of our Parish budget.
o Personnel costs (salaries, taxes, benefits) for staff/custodial is 67% of the budget.
o Remainder of budget goes to facilities (upkeep and utilities) and formation programs
o One of the parish missions is to have a strong Catho-lic grade school. The Tuition Financial Aid budget helps us to continue this mission.
o Capital budget is for major expenditures i.e. replac-ing aging HVAC units, school interior projects not cov-ered by tuition, etc. Some of these can be planned and timed according to funds availability, however, some-times a HVAC unit will go down and it will cost thou-sands of dollars to repair or replace it.
o The parish experiences tremendous generosity from our faithful parishioners, which enables the parish to continue to move forward with our mission to bring the light of Christ to all. The entire parish is very grateful for this generosity.
o We trust that God will give us the plans and blue-prints to continue His work in a fiscally sound manner. Finance Council will be reviewing the budget and prayerfully making the appropriate adjustments as deemed necessary. We ask for your continued support, humbly ask, if at all possible, increase your contribu-tion, and more importantly we ask for your prayers. If we all do a little more, it can make a BIG difference! May God bless you for your generosity.
What if God called you every day... and you could actually speak to Him? Advent is a wonderful time for reconnecting with God!

portant Prayer of the Day on Tuesday, December 20, at 7:30 pm in the Community Room.

Christmas Collection and
End of the Year Contributions
This year, Christmas falls on a Sunday. We count on four Sunday collections, in addition to the Christmas collections, in December, to cover our expenses. Please keep this in mind when you are making
your Christmas contributions. Also, with 2016 quickly drawing to a close, we wanted to remind you of the dead-lines for your contributions to be reflected in this tax year. Contributions made at the office or the offertory collection on Saturday, December 31st, will be consid-ered on your 2016 statement. If you are mailing your con-tribution, it must be postmarded December 31, 2016. For your convenience, you can also use the Online Giving option found on the parish website.
Finally, last December Congress made permanent the provision that IRA owners, age 70½ or older, can transfer up to $100,000.00 per year to an eligible charity tax-free. Funds must be transferred directly by the IRA trustee to the eligible charity. Consult your tax advisor for more details.

The Hope Chest … The Hope Chest will be closed for the Holidays from December 21, 2016-January 2, 2017. We will re-open on Jan 3, 2017. Our immediate needs will be blankets/comforters, sheets, towels, warm clothing in all sizes, adult gloves, and small housewares/appliances. Hope Chest’s hours are 9am-1pm Mon-Thursday, and our address is One Victoria Place, Rm 321, Painesville, OH 44077. Checks may be sent to this address any time.
We have a packing request for donations. Please use “tall kitchen-size bags” and “computer paper-size boxes” rather than large black “leaf-size bags”. Remember, many of our volunteers are retirees; if the bag is heavy for you, it's prob-ably too heavy for many volunteers. The suggested bags and boxes are more convenient for our volunteers to handle, and they fit inside the Hope Chest bin on the loading dock (on South St. Clair St.) Don’t leave anything outside that bin; if the bag gets wet it gets tossed.

Liturgy Corner
This weekend we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. We hear in today’s readings of Christ’s imminent arrival. In the First Reading, the prophet Isaiah tells us “… the young woman is with child and will bear a son and name him Emmanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). In the Gospel, Matthew tells us how Joseph, like Mary, followed the will of God and put his own interests aside as he welcomed this new child into their lives and named him Jesus, as the angel had command-ed. Advent is nearly over and our time of preparation is almost at its end.
Christmas is right around the corner. Think of the sacrifices Mary and Joseph made 2,000 years ago to welcome this special child who would ultimately save the world from sin. Are you ready to welcome Jesus into your lives this
Christmas?
"She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus."
Joseph heard these prophetic words in a dream. They
were words of anticipation, of what was to come. And in
a sense, they ushered in a kind of Advent for Joseph.
With this divine message, Joseph began a period of holy
waiting. He now knew that the Messiah was going to be
coming into his own home, and he had just nine months
to prepare! We can only imagine how Joseph might have
spent these precious days. Most likely he did more than
prepare a physical home for his soon-to-be-born Son; he
must have also used these days to prepare his heart, mind,
and soul for such a tremendous mission.
Today, we stand in a position not all that different from
St. Joseph. We also know that the Messiah will be arriv-
ing--not just in remembrance at Christmastime, but in
reality at the second coming. But unlike Joseph, we don't
have an exact timeframe. We don't know when Jesus will return. We just know that we need to be ready!
During the season of Advent we are challenged to recall
this fact and strive to get our hearts in order. The days are
short now until Christmas, and for all we know they
might be short until Christ's return as well. What remains
to be done? Aside from wrapping presents and planning
parties, where do we yet need to tidy up our habits to
properly celebrate the real meaning of this festive season?
How can we make sure that we don't get swept away in
the external preparations, forgetting the work that needs
to be done in the invisible silence of our souls?
God may not speak to all of us directly in our dreams, but
he does speak to us clearly through his word. May we
recognize today the mission he has laid before us.

The Season of giving …!The tradition of giving at Christmas began as the three
Kings brought their gifts to give to the baby Jesus. Today
that has translated to shopping for presents for friends,
family members, coworkers and even donating gifts to
those in need that we do not even know. These are all
worthy opportunities to show love and kindness to others,
but a large budget is not always necessary to show kind-
ness. Just as valuable are random acts of kindness that
only take a few moments. While walking through the
stores or standing in line making purchases, it is easy to
smile, be friendly and patient with those around you.
Maybe even hold a door for someone, offer to assist them
in carrying their groceries to the car and showing courtesy
while driving home. Random acts of kindness cost very
little but the visible changes in both the giver and the re-
ceiver are priceless. These acts are contagious and observ-
ers might join in and so on and so on until acts of kind-
ness are happening all over. What a wonderful sight that
would be as we all help make each other’s season bright!
