Future plans for Railway Power Supply

Energy Plan, Nils Grønneberg

The engineering section is one of two sections in the Planning (Engineering) and Project department

12 employees specialising in electricity/energy

2

Infrastructure – Energy – Planning (Engineering)

• Investigation of need for Railway Power Supply, nationally

Simulation and load analyses based on:− traffic information (current and future wagon-routing tables)− infrastructure information (gradient, tunnel, catenary, etc.)− stock information (train types, composition, freight loads, characteristics)− converter data (equipment, types, performance, characteristics, etc.)− converter failure scenarios.

Technical-financial analysis with recommended measures

Advisor assistance through framework agreements

3

Infrastructure – Energy – Plan

• Concept designs for relevant converter stations

Define location, concept and dimensioning.

Stakeholder analyses and environmental impact.

Technical-financial pilot project with recommended solution, forming the basis for detailed planning, approval and potentialtendering.

4

Infrastructure – Energy – Plan

• Professional support:

Provide technical expertise for the projects

Specify technical requirements

Evaluate tenders

Follow up technical deliveries

5

Infrastructure – Energy – Plan

• Framework conditions

National Transport Plan (NTP)

Investigation areas, Energy Supply

• New central converter station – Oslo East

Concept design, part 1 (location): Åsland (Follo Line)Concept design, part 2 (dimensioning): Initiated

Provisional plan: Static converters, 4 x 40 MVA

Turnkey contract: 2019-2021

• Closure of Alnabru and Holmlia converter stations

9

Plans in the Oslo area

• Temporary converter station in Vestfold

Linked to new double track Nykirke - Barkåker (UNB)Concept design work has not commencedLand earmarked at new Skoppum station

Provisional plan: Install mobile static converter (existing)Use existing converter 15 MVARemaining until Drammen converter is operational

Turnkey contract: 2022-2024

• Closure of Skoppum and Larvik converter station (relocation of mobile static converter)

10

Plans in the Oslo area

• New converter station in Hønefoss

Linked to construction of the new Ringerike LineConcept design work to commence in 2020Land suggested at new stabling area in Hønefoss

Provisional plan: Establish new converter station4 static converters Power requirement 60 MVA

Turnkey contract: 2022-2025

• Closure of existing converter station

11

Plans in the Oslo area

• Upgrading of Jessheim converter station

Necessary increase in performance for increasing Intercity traffic

This measure will also facilitate regeneration

New static converter in existing or new building

Turnkey contract: 2027-2030

12

Plans in the Oslo area

• New converter station at Drammen

Recommended in the long term, before investment needs in Asker

Planning work not commencedPossible location slightly west of Gulskogen/DrammenRequires AT system Oslo-Drammen

Indication: New static converter stationPower requirement 60 MVA

Turnkey contract: 2032-2035

• Asker can be closed when Drammen and Hønefoss converters are operational

13

Plans in the Oslo area

• New converter station at Hamar

Necessary increase in performance on Dovre Line southLinked to new double track plots south of Hamar (Kleverud – Sørli/Åkersvika)

Concept design work completed. Location is determined

The project is in the detailed planning phase …… (more info in next entry)

• Closure of Tangen converter station (losing track access)

• Closure and relocation of mobile converter station at Rudshøgda(Used elsewhere, e.g. on the Bergen Line)

14

Plans in the Oslo area

• Refurbishment/upgrading of Kjelland converter station

Necessary increase in performance on Sørlandet Line

Concept design work has commenced

Provisional plan: New static convertersPower requirement 30 MVA

Turnkey contract: 2019-2021

15

Plans for the Sørlandet Line

• Refurbishment/upgrading of Nelaug converter stationThe concept design work will commence in 2018Concept development for modernisation of station in or outside existing rock caverns

Implementation: 2020-2022

• Increased performance in Leivoll converter stationPlanning work to commence in 2024Preparations at the station and replacement of rotary converters

Implementation: 2026-2027
