PART I I

HOW PRODUCTS ARE MADE

FUNSIZE ・ FUNSIZE SPRINT SCHOOL ・ @FUNSIZE ・ WWW.FUNSIZE.CO

FIRST,

WE’RE TALKING ABOUT SOFTWARE not MARKETING DESIGN

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH WATERFALL?

WHY AGILE?

Design is a process that should yield perfect work. Nope. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Super wrong.

AGILE/LEAN’S CYCLICAL AND INCREMENTAL PROCESS

GATHER REQUIREMENTS

If you’re a product designer, you’re really designing to create incremental value.

Today’s client’s are fucking smart. The agency and designers don’t hold all the expertise.

THE BENEFITS

Teamwork: mo’ minds = mo’ betta

Move fast, fail fast, iterate fast

MVP & validation-oriented work

Incremental process vs. ship-and-done mentality

Accommodates quarterly and annual budget considerations vs. an entire-

project-at-once approach

Full project team transparency

Agency-to-client trust

Get product market fit faster

Maximizes investments and saves money

No more over working as a designer

Get paid for everything you do, even if you finish a little early

DESIGN SPRINTS

TODAY WE’LL BE REVIEWING

Funsize Agile 2-Week Design Sprint

For creating short and long term incremental value with 2 week design

sprints in retainer engagements.

KICK OFF

STORIES

THE WHO, WHAT AND WHY METHOD

“As a power user I need to be able to login to Instagram so I can easily switch accounts to be able manage my personal

and business profiles.”

STORIES

TASK AND ACTIVITY METHOD

“Design account switching flow”

“Refine onboarding wireframes”

“Complete style guide and asset library”

STORIES

Stories are features and blocks of the work that are broken up into small, easy to understand tasks that describe what

you are creating and when.

These are written and estimated collaboratively by our clients and our design team. Each sprint we plan and

execute the stories based on priority and what we can plan within our availability (velocity).

STORIES

Stories provide transparency. Stakeholders can read the stories in layman’s terms, and ask questions. Clients can

look at how they are prioritized and have meaningful conversations about what’s most important.

Stories help lower risk. Clients often have limited resources at their disposal. Delivering smaller pieces of work at a rapid pace helps clients get their products in

front of their audience faster.

SPRINT POINTS

Estimating tasks with points help us assign an estimate that matches the effort. Breaking things into smaller tasks allow

us to keep a good pace and manage the work smartly.

2 Hour Task = 1 Point

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16

SPRINT ACTIVITIES (8 POINTS/SPRINT)

Sprint Kickoff: 1 Pt./Sprint Our teams meet to kick off the sprint.

Standups: 1 Pt./Sprint Our two teams meet to check the pulse on the status and various planning. We discuss work in progress, blockers, and capture action items for both teams.

Internal Review: 2Pts./Sprint Funsize design team internal review of progress.

Design Review: 2Pts./Sprint Funsize and client teams meet weekly to review the design progress, discuss open stories, capture action items and discuss design.

Backlog Groom: 2Pts./Sprint Funsize and client meeting to organize the backlog of upcoming items, capture tasks and stories we believe should be worked on, and plan the next sprint in advance of the next sprint.

SPRINT VELOCITY: A 1 PERSON DESIGN TEAM

1. Starting Velocity

A project has 1 Designer who works a typical 40 hour per week schedule or 80 hours per 2 week sprint.

Converting hours to points that designer can work a maximum of 40 points per 2 week sprint.

2. Adjusted Velocity

40 Points -Sprint Activities (8 Pts.) = 32 Points/2 Week Sprint

This designer is doing 32 Hours of design work and 8 hours of sprint activities/week.

WHAT THE HELL MAN?

Why do we do this?

How did we create this process?

Why is it important for our clients and design team to embrace this way of working?

IT’S FUNSIZE-STYLE SPRINT WRKSHOP TIME!
