Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): As the new school year begins, the staff at St. Jane Frances joins me in welcoming back all those children returning to our school and we extend a sincere welcome to all those new to our school family. We look forward to working with you and your children throughout this academic year with renewed enthusiasm and great expectations. Our main objective at St. Jane Frances is to continue to foster a strong partnership of home, school and parish. It is only by working as a team with your support and co-operation that we are able to accomplish the aims and objectives we set out for your children. We strongly encourage parents to call us whenever you feel it necessary to discuss matters concerning your child. This year is indeed a very special year for St. Jane Frances Catholic School and Community. St. Jane Frances will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. This is a milestone for our school and will be commemorated throughout the year. More information will follow about the celebration that will take place in the Spring. We are also entering the Year of Charity, the third year in the board’s 3-year pastoral plan focusing on Faith, Hope and Charity. A Special Welcome back to the following staff, Ms. Pietka (Gr. 2), Ms. Pantaleo (Gr. 5), Ms. Apaza (French), Ms. Raposo (Gr.3), Ms. Gates (Gr. 6) and Ms. Kramer (Library Technician). We also extend a warm welcome to staff members new to our school: Mr. Dempsey (Vice Principal), Ms. Power (Gr. SK/1), Ms. Failla (Gr. 3), Ms. Maiorano (French), Mr. Felice (Phys. Ed.), Ms. Orestano (Early Childhood Education Teacher), Ms. Iozzo (Early Childhood Education Teacher), Ms. Tortola (Early Childhood Education Teacher) and Mr. Pereira (Head Custodian). Many thanks to all of our teachers and support staff for their hard work, commitment and dedication in preparing the classrooms for the new school year, and to Ms. Miceli, Ms. Caputo and Ms. Guastelluccia our school secretaries for keeping us organized and on track!! Thank you to Mr. Pereira, our Head Caretaker, and his staff for their hard work over the summer to help prepare our school for this new year! Thank you to all! Safe schools and discipline also continue to be priorities. These themes will be emphasized throughout the weeks and months to come. Please take the time to go over appropriate behaviour with your children, including the expectation that all students must arrive on time and dressed in our school’s appropriate dress code or uniform. This is particularly important in regards to our start time of 8:30 am. Teachers will begin their teaching promptly at 8:35 am. SCHOOL SAFETY PROCEDURES AND
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
To help eliminate trespassers, reduce the traffic existing in
the corridors at entry and dismissal times and prevent the
unnecessary interruptions to the teaching/learning process
your child receives each day, we need your support and
co-operation in adhering to the following procedures: 1. All visitors and parents/guardians are to report to the
office.
2. Students are to be picked up and dropped off in the
playground.
3. If you are dropping off your child after the start of the
school day, please come to the office and report to the
secretary.
4. Students are NOT permitted to leave the school
grounds for any reason unless they bring a written,
signed and dated permission note from his/her parent,
or unless a parent/guardian comes to take the child out
of the school. If you are picking up your child before
dismissal (ie. for an appointment), please report to the
office and wait for your child in the lobby.
5. If someone other than a parent or the usual caregiver
for your child is picking up your child, please advise
your child’s teacher or the office through a phone call
or a note.
6. If you are dropping off a lunch or other items during
school hours, please leave them at the office.
7. If you have an appointment with a teacher or you
would like to make an appointment, please report to
the office and our secretary will make the necessary
arrangements.

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM - STUDENT ILLNESS
OR ABSENTEEISM
If your child is to be absent from school for any
reason, please telephone the school (416-393-5296) to inform
the secretary as early as possible on the first day of the child’s
absence. (We also have a voicemail box for your convenience to
call at any time to leave a message.) This will reassure the school
that your child is safe. If a child is absent, then we will call home
if we have not been notified. Please ensure we have updated
home, business and emergency phone numbers. When a student
returns to school after an absence, he or she must bring a signed and
dated parental or medical note to explain the reason.
If your child has to leave during the day for an appointment,
please send a signed and dated note requesting his/her dismissal
and the time. For safety reasons, we strongly recommend that
younger children not be allowed to go home on their own and
should be picked up by an adult.
If children are not feeling well, please give them an opportunity to
recuperate at home. It is assumed that if children are well enough
to be at school, they are also well enough to take part in recess.
Children need time to get some fresh air and stretch their muscles.
If they are dressed properly, they will be able to do this in
comfort, even on our cold Canadian winter days.
STUDENT DATA INFORMATION
In order that we may keep our student data updated, we ask that
you complete the “HEALTH INFORMATION SURVEY
FORM”, “INFORMATION SHEET & PERMISSION
FORM”, “SAFE DISMISSAL FORM” and “INTERNET
SAFETY FORM” sent home earlier and return them to school
with your child no later than Monday, September 22, 2014..
Your co-operation is appreciated.
Student Accident Insurance forms have also been disturbed to
the student. Parents should send money directly to the company
(NOT TO THE SCHOOL) if this insurance is desired. The
insurance is inexpensive and strongly recommended
SCHOOL BUSES
Please note that if your child is registered to ride the school bus,
he or she must ride the school bus and not take the liberty to
walk home on any given day. Any necessary changes to your
child’s transportation to and from the school must be
accompanied by a signed and dated parental note. Students who
are registered to ride the school bus but consistently choose not
to, will end up forfeiting this privilege.
Please also be reminded that students can only ride the school
bus if they have returned the permission form, (Safety Dismissal
Form) signed by parents/guardians, granting permission to do
so. We cannot allow students to ride the bus if this form has not
been returned. Please feel free to contact the school if you
require further information.
KISS AND RIDE DROP-OFF/PARKING LOT
We strongly encourage parents to drop off their children at the
Kiss & Ride Drop-Off Area on Spenvalley Drive and NOT
drive into the school parking lot. The school parking lot is very
congested and dangerous for the children. In emergency
situations if parents need to use the parking lot, we remind you
to use extreme caution. Children must not go into the parking
lot area without an adult. Parents are reminded to hold their
child(ren)’s hand while walking through the parking lot. Parents
please help us keep the school environment safe. We need your
support!
PLEASE DO NOT PARK YOUR VEHICLE IN THE
KISS & RIDE DROP-OFF AREA. PLEASE DO NOT
PARK YOUR VEHICLE AT THE FRONT OF THE
SCHOOL ON JANE STREET IN THE EMERGENCY
FIRE ROUTE OR STAFF PARKING LOT.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT PARKING
ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WILL BE
PATROLLING OUR SCHOOL
COMMUNITY. AVOID RECEIVING AN
EXPENSIVE $250.00 PARKING TICKET.
DO NOT PARK IN THE ABOVE
MENTIONED AREAS!
When picking up students at the end of the day, please
park in other areas such as Church Parking Lot.
Emergency Fire Routes on Jane Street and Spenvalley
Drive are strictly reserved for school busses only! Let’s
work together to keep our children safe.
EXCURSIONS All pupils must give a signed parental consent form to
their teacher before going on an excursion. Excursions
are a valuable part of the school program. Each child
should make every effort to participate.
LUNCHTIME RULES AND NUTRITIONAL
PROGRAMS
To ensure student safety, children will be asked to eat lunch at
school. To avoid classroom disruptions, please send your
children to school in the morning with a packed lunch. Lunch
time begins at 11:15 AM until 12:15. Please note that this is a
new time, set by the Board. At 11:55 AM students will be sent
out to the playground (weather permitting). Students will not be
permitted to leave school property to purchase a lunch at a
neighborhood food establishment unless they are picked up,
signed out, and accompanied by a responsible adult known to
the child. The responsible adult must have previous written
consent from the parent, a record of which must be on file in the
school office. For health and safety reasons, students will not be
permitted to eat lunch in the schoolyard, as this attracts unwanted
seagulls and other creatures. Thank you for your support.
Please ensure that your child brings a lunch to school every day.
We ask that lunches not be brought to school for the students. For
those odd times when students do forget their lunches, we ask that
lunches brought in be clearly marked and left on the lunch table
inside the main office by 11:15 AM. Students can pick up their
lunches during the lunch period. Parents/Guardians will not be
permitted to drop off lunches in the classrooms, nor will students be
permitted to pick up their lunches during class time. This is to
minimize disruption during important instructional time in the
classroom.
The Lunch Period Schedule is as follows and supervision has been
arranged accordingly: 11:15 AM to 11:35 AM – All Grades eat lunch
11:35 AM to 12:15 PM – All Grades have recess
While they have not begun as of yet, St. Jane Frances Catholic School
offers a Nutritional Snack program for our students. This will begin in
October. Snack order forms will be sent home.
ANAPHYLAXIS ALERT
Allergen-Aware and
Scent-Sensitive Environment
Please take special note that we have children in our school who
have a very serious, life-threatening allergy to tree nuts,
peanuts, all nut/peanut products, all seafood products, called
Anaphylaxis. We are notifying all parents that students should
not bring any nuts, peanuts, peanut butter or any food
containing nuts or peanut products such as peanut oil, etc., as
well as any seafood products. We ask that you DO NOT bring
any personal baking or other treats to the school to share with
the class. This is important to ensure the safety and welfare of
these children.
Please also be aware that we are also a scent-sensitive school, as
there are members of our community who suffer severe reactions
to certain scents such as perfumes, hair products, lotions etc.
Please respect the need to refrain from using such products at the
school.
SIMPLIFY YOUR MORNING ROUTINE
As we begin a new school year, we need to think
about getting back on a morning schedule so our
children can get to school on time and on a regular
basis. Here are some suggestions to simplify your
morning routine.
1. PREPACK LUNCHES. Save time by
preparing lunches and snacks the night
before.
2. GET OUT THE DOOR FASTER. Have
your coffee maker prepared so all you have
to do is press the start button in the morning.
3. SPEEDY BREAKFAST
SOLUTIONS. Have a
line-up of several routine
breakfasts with a least
one being portable. You
may want to get into the
habit of setting the
breakfast table the night
before.
4. WHAT TO WEAR. Prepare what everyone
will be wearing the night before. Have your
children help pick their clothing to lessen
morning chaos.
5. TAKE TURNS. Coordinate bathroom
schedules with the people you live with.
6. BACKPACK PANIC. Get children into
the habit of emptying their backpacks as
soon as they get home from school. Pack
the backpacks at night and place them at the
front door to speed up the morning rush.
7. TIME YOURSELF. Set a time for task
completion such as time in the shower.
Better still; take your shower the night
before.
8. TRANSPORTATION. Ensure that
transportation is arranged the night before
school. This includes which bus route to
take, what route to take if walking or who
will be carpooling.
9. KEEP THE PEACE. Review your
family’s rules around morning routines and
expectations.
10. IGNORE MORNING CHORES. Instill a
family rule that indicates that there will be
no privileges (watching television, video
games, telephone privileges) until their
responsibilities (chores and homework) are
completed – stand firm.
It is understandable that not all mornings will run
smoothly, however being prepared and consistent
will help get your children to school on time and
regularly.
10 BEDTIME TIPS
As we begin a new school year, we need to think about
getting back on a sleep schedule to ensure that your
children are getting enough sleep to be rested and ready to
manage their academic challenges. Here are some
suggestions to simplify your bedtime routines.
1. Make sleep a family priority and part of your daily
schedule.
2. Recognize sleep problems in your child. Speak to
their teacher about any concerns.
3. Consistency and follow through are key ingredients
for success.
4. Teamwork. Think of your family as a team where
all members must work together for success.
5. Set a regular bedtime and wake time.
6. Routine. Help your children identify that it is time
for sleep and that a consistent nigh time pattern will
ensue. Example: bath, snack, brushing teeth,
bedtime story or independent reading and lights
out.
7. Dress and room temperature should be on the
cooler side to ensure good rest.
8. Transitional object. Allow your child to have a
favorite plush toy or blanket to help them have a
sense of security and control as they fall asleep.
9. Room and bed sharing. It is healthy for children to
sleep alone in their own beds. There are less sleep
disturbances and awakenings. Sleeping separately
is important to help a child separate without anxiety
and form his own identity.
10. One last thing. Provide all the hugs and kisses your
child needs before bed. Then stick to the rule that
once they are in bed, they must stay in bed for the
night.
Sweet Dreams.
SCHOOL UNIFORMS & DRESS CODE
Students of St. Jane Frances Catholic School are to dress
in the school’s appropriate dress code or uniform, which
consists of solid blue navy bottoms and solid collared
white or blue tops, more specifically: a navy blue pant,
kilt, or short; a white collared polo-shirt, oxford dress
shirt, or blouse, with or without a school crest; a navy
blue sweater or pullover, also with or without the school
crest; or vest.. Hoodies, t-shirts, and other articles of
clothing not listed above are absolutely not allowed.
Clothing can be purchased at your choice of a wide
variety of retail outlets in our community. A number of
stores sell navy and white clothing for school-aged
children, in response to the growing demand of such
items. Wal-Mart, The Gap, The Children’s Place and Old
Navy are some of the stores that sell navy and white
clothing that meets the requirements of the proposed dress
code. Please be aware that on special school activity
days students will be given the opportunity to wear
different clothes (Dress Down Day).
Please write your child’s name on all uniform items, as
many lost items are returned to the office.
It is essential that all students be in dress code from
the beginning as this sets the tone for the school year.
We wish to send a consistent message to all students
that the uniform will be strictly enforced. For older
students, please remind them that it is their
responsibility to ensure they come to school in dress
code and you may refer them to the student agenda.
HOMEWORK
The assignment of homework will vary according to
grade level, student achievement and teacher
expectations. All students are required to complete at
home any work that they did not finish in class. We
strongly encourage that parents motivate children to read
on a nightly basis. Activities, such as reading, playing,
outings, hobbies, games and family discussions provide
children with the foundation and background necessary to
facilitate learning in the classroom. Students should
review the day’s work to promote learning.
Following are suggested daily homework timelines:
Grade One – 5 to 10 min.
Grade Two – 10 to 20 min.
Grade Three – 20 to 30 min.
Grade Four – 30 to 40 min. Grade Eight – 70 to 80 min.
Grade Five – 40 to 50 min.
Grade Six – 50 to 60 min.
Grade Seven – 60 to 70 min.
Grade Eight – 70 to 80 min.
Homework is the responsibility of the students, and parents are
asked to provide a supportive environment in which to work.
Organizational and time management skills are learned in the
elementary grades. Agendas are necessary to help students
improve their organizational skills and to keep parents informed.

implementing a successful school agenda for the 2014-2015
academic year.
Agendas are organizers/planners that help students understand
expectation, create timelines, set goals, monitor progress and
track their own success. The agendas are an effective learning
tool for teachers. We trust through co-operative efforts for all
concerned, we will be able to help students achieve their full
potential at St. Jane Frances Catholic School. The cost for each
agenda is $5.00 per student. PART OF THE COST FOR THE
AGENDAS WILL BE SUBSIDIZED BY OUR SCHOOL
COUNCIL THROUGH FUNDRAISING EVENTS. Please
send $5.00 to school with your child as soon as possible.
The first part of the agenda book contains important names, dates
and general information for parents and students. Please take
time to read and discuss this information with your child(ren).
Thank you for your co-operation and support.
HEPATITIS B AND MENINGITIS C

affect the liver. Although this disease is sometimes very
mild and produces no symptons, it can also be very
serious. Immunization requires two injections over a six-

CASL Legislation Canada’s anti-spam law (CASL) would come into
force as of July 1, 2014. CASL impacts Board
Staff, and that of CSACs, to send out electronic
messages (CEMs) regarding activities which can be
defined as commercial, such as invitations to
purchase school photographs, spirit wear,
yearbooks, pizza days, special events and field
trips, etc., whether these messages are sent directly
(eg. via email, text message or social media notice)
or included indirectly in electronic publications
such as school e-newsletters.
Principals emailing newsletters which may contain
material of a commercial nature should note that
CASL requires that e-newsletters with a CEM
clearly contain school address, web or email
information, and an unsubscribe function. The
Communications, IT and Legal teams continue to
work on creating an automated system that ensures
the Board’s ongoing compliance with CASL with
regards to CEMs. Further updates will be
provided as they become available. - See more at:
