Avoid Quick Judgement
A lovely girl was holding two apples in her hands. Her mother came and softly asked her little daughter with a smile:
Could you give me one of your two apples?
The girl looked up at her mother for some time, then took a quick bite on one apple and then quickly on the other.
The mother felt the smile on her face freeze, she tried hard not to reveal her disappointment.
Then the little girl handed one of her bitten apples to her mother and said: Mummy, Here you are! This is the sweater one!!!
Avoid quick Judgement. Give others the privilege to explain themselves. What you see may not be the reality. Never conclude for others.
It is the calm, forgiving, equitable, well balanced mind that does the greatest amount of work.
Amtech participated in , held in Noida. Our stall Elecrama 2020was well attended by the visitors, including many of our customers. It was a great pleasure to interact with them and to understand their requirements, face to face.

TECHNO-TALK
Before selecting VFD we need to select the motor.
Selection of motor:
Suppose that the motor requires torque T (kg-m) for any speed from 300 RPM to 3600 RPM
Hence for 2 pole motor, motor has to operate from 5 Hz to 60 Hz and has to provide torque T to the load.
1. Select the motor power rating from the equation
T x 3600
Motor Power (kW), P = ----------- -------------------------------------(1)
974
As the motor has to operate up to 5 Hz, it will require derating as per the formula:
Derating = (25-5) x 1 = 20% (The motor needs to be derated 1% per Hz below 25 Hz). As there will be voltage and frequency variation there will be additional derating of about 15%.
Hence the motor power rating P should be increased to
P (As calculated in equation (1) )
P1 = --------------------------------------------- x 100 ---------------------(2)
(100-20) x (100-15)
Select the motor from motor catalog such that motor power rating Pm is greater than P1.
Select the motor with F class of insulation.
Find out the torque Tm of the selected motor at 3000 RPM (assuming that the motor is 2 pole and its base speed is 3000 RPM)
Tm x 3000 x 3000
Torque at 3600 RPM = ------------------------ = T(3600)
3600 x 3600
Verify that T(3600) is more than 1.5 x T. If it is not then select the motor with higher power rating and verify as above for that motor.------------(3)
Thus the motor is selected.
Selection of VFD:
Horse Power Rating (HP) of VFD should be more than or equal to the HP of the selected motor.
Find out whether KVA (≈ HP) of VFD is less than five times the capacity of the distribution transformer to which the VFD will be connected.
If it is so then the VFD must have 3% input choke or equivalent DC reactor.
Find out the cable length between the VFD and motor. If it is more than 50 meters then 3% output choke is required (consult VFD manufacture for the output reactor requirement).
If the VFD is to be connected to multiple motors at the output then VFD HP rating should be more than or equal to the sum of the HPs of all the motors to be connected at its output.
In case of multiple motors the motors should be individually protected, VFD will not be able to protect the motors against overload or single-phasing.
If the VFD is to be mounted inside the panel and the panel inside temperature is more than the maximum ambient temperature allowed at rated power capacity of VFD, derate the VFD power capacity (increase the VFD power capacity required) in consultation with VFD supplier.
If the VFD is to be used at altitudes above 1000 meters, derate it in consultation with VFD supplier.
Provide the space around VFD, provide the input-output cables, input MCB for the VFD as mentioned in its "Instruction and Operation manual".
This is a general guide-line; in case of any specific application / requirement contact the VFD supplier.
