"Early in 2013 Western Sydney Institute installed a locally hosted instance of Mahara providing all students and staff with a WSI ePortfolio account. A project was then created to develop and trial a model and resources for providing individuals (students, teachers and other staff) with skills to start using their ePortfolios on a personal basis (unrelated to their formal studies). This workshop will engage participants in thinking about why training/assistance/support should be provided to account holders outside of their formal studies, how to develop a model for implementation of training and support, ideas for running a trial, providing ongoing assistance etc. "

3

THE TOP-DOWN APPROACH – TEACHER CENTRIC

Teachers/trainers/facilitators dictate:

• what they want to see in their student’s eportfolios

• how they want to see it – sometimes providing templates

• how the student should share their eportfolio with them and for how long.

THE BOTTOM-UP APPROACH – LEARNER CENTRIC

Learners (not teachers/trainers/facilitators) decide:

• If they will use their eportfolio

• What artefacts they will place in it

• How they will display those artefacts – and the purpose of those displays

• If, when, with who and for how long they will share those displays
