RATHER THAN WAITING TO TRAIPSE THROUGH WESTERN EUROPE, THIS COLLECTOR CHOSE TO TRANSLATE FRENCH DESIGN INTO HER OWN DIALECT.
WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY MARION PARSONS
I SHOULD MAKEIT VERY CLEARTHAT I’VE NEVERBEEN TO FRANCE.
I didn’t curate my personal French style onshopping trips to Parisand Provence. I didn’tship it in crates acrossthe ocean. Instead, Ideveloped it throughcareful perusal of yardsales, thrift stores, antique malls and auctions.
As an antiques dealerand design enthusiast, I’ve learned over the yearsthat French style is somuch more than acquiring an importedbergère. Fortunately fordo-it-yourself fans andthrift shoppers who can’t voyage across the Atlantic, the elements of Frenchstyle are easy to translate.

COLORWhile there isn’t onecolor combination thatdefines French style, there are a few palettesthat immediately standout as quintessential.
Soft blues, whites, grays and creams conjurequiet French refinery inwashed-out monochrome.A room in need of awarmer touch can benefitfrom the sun-kissedprovincial scheme of richreds, sunny yellows andterra cotta.
FABRICAs a young newlywed, I had almost weekly dateswith the remnant bins atthe local fabric store. Iquickly began to gravitatetoward toiles, ticking andother unique French-inspired fabrics.
Some people choose atoile and enthusiasticallycover the walls, bed andfurniture, but I prefer amore subtle approach.Boldly printed fabricscommand more attentionwhen used as accents ina few key places.

TEXTILESMonogrammed tea towels, age-softenedembroidered linen sheetsand matlasse spreadscan all bring a touch ofFrance to a space. Keepin mind that these piecesneedn’t be confined totheir intended use.
Repurpose a linensheet as a slipcover, ormake a pillow out of anantique tea towel. Lespossibilities sont sans fin!
FURNITUREOne key piece of furniturein a space can easily setthe tone for the rest ofthe room. Look for pieceswith caning, curvy legs, carved details and eithera painted finish or awarm wood tone. In yourseating arrangements, position your standoutpieces in the best placesto draw the eye.

ACCESSORIESAdding a few choiceaccessories can entirelychange the feel of aspace, and I’m always onthe lookout for smallerpieces that give off aFrench vibe. Alabasterlamps, bucolic oil paintings, breadboards, gilded frames and iron-stone all work to givethat last bit of flair to your arrangements.
OVERALLYour choices of furniture, fabrics, accessories, colors and texturesshould evoke a feelingthat both very familiarand very French.

HARVEST FRESH LAVENDER TO ADD A CHARMING QUALITY TO YOUR HOME OR GARDEN.
BY STEPHANIE ROSE
LAVENDER IS MYFAVORITE OF ALLSCENTS. I love it fresh when theplants are in bloom and as it driesaround the garden. I use it insachets tucked into my pillow atnight, or as bath salts to soak awaythe aches of the gardening day. Thismagical herb is said to promoterelaxation, relieve stress, and evensoothe an achy head. Not to mention that the bees love it just asmuch as I do.
Lavender is commonly groupedinto two species: English lavender(Lavandula angustifolia) with delicate flowers and long stems, and Spanish lavender (Lavandulastoechas) with its showy hat ofbracts on a perennial shrub. I growa few ornamental Spanish lavenderplants, but only English lavenderavails itself to year-round use.
The best time to harvest Englishlavender is when the buds haveformed on the plant but the flowershave not yet opened.

Lavender harvested at this time of year will fall off the stems moreeasily when dry, making it easier to collect. It will also retain fragrance and color longer at thisstage. The cultivar of your lavender may also contribute todetermining the plants’ fragrance, color and longevity.
To harvest your lavender, take a
sharp bypass pruner and gather a
small handful of long flower stems.
Snip them at the base and continue collecting stems in yourhand until you have a nice-sizedbundle. Secure the bundle withtwine, and continue until the plantis fully harvested.
Pruning the plants like this willkeep the shrub tidy and greenthrough colder weather. It is best toprune the plants each summer tomaintain a controlled shape andget the most of your harvest.
To dry bunches, hang them in a
warm, dry spot out of direct
sunlight. Ideal places to hang yourbundles are: Under the eaves ofyour home, in the garage or a protected spot in the garden. Ifound an old painting ladder thatworks perfectly as a hanging rackin my yard. In previous years, I havedried them along a shady fenceand made them into a wreath.
Adorn your home with drying
lavender to make it smell heavenly.
After the bundles have fully dried, typically two to four weeks, you canshake or gently rub the flower budsinto a tray or bowl. Store lavenderin a lidded jar in a cool dark placeand repeat next year.
Once you’ve collected your bountyof fresh herbs, try incorporatinglavender into your everyday craftprojects, along with anywhere elseyou could use a pretty bud or alovely scent.

CUSTOM CURTAINSDRESS YOUR WINDOWS IN FRENCH STYLE BY CREATING YOUR OWN,
EASY-TO-MAKE CURTAINS FEATURING VINTAGE-INSPIRED FABRIC.
BY SARAH JANE O’KEEFE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FRENCH COUNTRY COTTAGE
AS THE CREATOROF THE POPULARBLOG “FRENCHCOUNTRYCOTTAGE,” Courtney surrounds herself withFrench style with a decidedly vintage twist. Herposts on lifestyle, décor,do-it-yourself projects andrenovations on her 1940scottage inspire readers withromantic color schemesand clever ideas.
Courtney wanted a lined, heavy curtain for her guestbedroom. Her previous curtains weren’t blockingenough light and their lightcolor was leaving some-thing to be desired. With alove for vintage upholsteryand fabric, specifically floral ticking fabrics withsoft colors, stripes and delicate flowers, she decided to combine theexisting panels with a printshe loved.
“I found the fabric forthese drapes and instantlyimagined them as panelswith a pretty fringe to addthat touch of drama,”Courtney says.
FS-1406-08-39-FOB.CX 4/21/14 2:44 AM Page 18
She took down the lightweight curtains andturned to a set of clearancedraperies she had purchaseda few years before. Trimmingthe fabric to size and pinningin it place, Courtney sewed afolded edge of the fabric alongthe edge of the trim.
“I simply sewed the newfabric to each of the existingpanels and left the fringealong the edges.”

COURTNEY’SFRENCHSTYLEFOR THIS BLOGGER,FRENCH STYLE ISMORE THAN HOMEDÉCOR; IT IS ALIFESTYLE.
My style is a little French country, alittle shabby and romantic and a little cottage.
I love gilding on anything andeverything.
I think every room should have a little bling with a chandelier.
I love vintage French pieces as wellas old, chipping paint and weathered wood.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
ON COURTNEY, visit frenchcountrycottage.blogspot.com.
Courtney kept her sewing simple by hanging her curtainswith clips. She folded about oneinch of fabric over the top of theexisting rod pocket and stitchedacross. When making your owncurtains, Courtney warns not toclose too much of the rod pocketshould you decide to use it at alater time.
“I love the beautiful pattern andcolors in the fabric. It remindsme of a vintage French tickingupholstery fabric. The fringe addsthat touch of elegance I love andit makes the curtains that muchmore beautiful.”

ADDING FLAVORTHE CLASSIC FRENCH KITCHEN FOLLOWS A FEW SIMPLE RULES.
BY JACQUELINE deMONTRAVEL
IT IS HARD TOIMAGINE preparingcoq au vin and a chocolate soufflé in atiny pre-war kitchen. The French’s passion for cooking translatesinto the kitchen’sdesign, which is spacious with plenty ofroom for prep workand places to gather.Stoves appear at theready and sinks arelarge and deep, perfect for washing garden-fresh vegetables.
The décor is asimprecise as a Frenchrecipe. Bold colors canbe seen on the walls oreven the appliances.Lighting is plentiful andthere are large drawersand cabinetry to meetthe needs of a seriouschef. The numerousplaces to sit foster aconvivial mood centered on cooking.
“The typical French-country kitchen evokeda feeling of comfortand warmth and was aplace where family andfriends could gather,”says John Witt of Witt Construction.

CUISINE
The atmosphere of thekitchen is generated byits architecture, furniture, storage methods andnatural color scheme,”says John.
Aside from these elements, there is yetanother that truly conveys the artistry of aFrench kitchen.
“Color plays a majorrole in raising the feeling of a Frenchcountry kitchen.Because of buildingmaterials used at thattime, the color schemeswere typically natural.”
John typically usesVenetian plaster wallsand paints ceilings inshades of buttery ormustard yellow. He alsoemploys such characterdetails as crown molding, carved leaves, rooster motifs and glazing on the cabinets.

FRANCE, WITH ITSOVERFLOWINGBEAUTY, IS MORETHAN PARIS, A REDCHECK CLOTH, MARIEANTOINETTE ORBLEU GRIS FADEDGRANDEUR.
MANY PEOPLE DREAM OFMOVING TO FRANCE andfinding a perfect pied a terre: an oldsoulful home or castle that speaks totheir romantic heart, a place wherethey can let their roots intertwine withthe French way of life. They dream of acharming village a stone’s throw awayfrom where the aroma of baguettesand croissants can wake them.
Perhaps they have thoughts of a market with fresh produce, a local winery, or cafe to pass the hours withfriends. Ah! They may even imagine alife in a French village with charmingantiques shops, where one could findcentury-old treasure to call their own.

I never imagined living in France, sowhen I met a Frenchman in SanFrancisco my wildest dreams did notinclude moving to his homeland. To mysurprise, I arrived in France 25 yearsago. My husband and I did not have achair to sit on, a mirror to see in nor aplate to eat from. He was newly graduated when I joined him with asuitcase and handbag. The brocante(flea market) became ours, along withthe fun —dare I say the adventure—ofcreating a home from scratch.
Shopping at the French brocantes isan experience of choices beyond thescope of wonder and awe. It can alsobe overwhelming. Which direction togo? Where to buy? How do you mastera style that speaks French to youthough remains faithful to what Frenchtruly is?

France, with its overflowing beauty,is more than Paris, a red check cloth,Marie Antoinette or bleu gris fadedgrandeur. It is a treasure chest full ofyears, styles and periods that spur ourimagination to explore. Each region ofFrance has its own signature style, objects of historical importance andpractical everyday pieces.
At the brocantes such old things aslinens, lamps, mirrors, paintings, nightstands, teacups, books, statuesand chairs appear regularly. Big tosmall, important to loved, delicate tosolid, dreamy to practical—the rangeof what can be found is incredibleeven now.
A bon vivant is someone who liveswell. This does not imply a person isnecessarily wealthy, but rather onewho is at ease and enjoys day-to-daylife; enjoying good food, wine and company. It is about allowing yourinner child to take hold, to let the perfume carry you, the pastry shopslure you, the history speak to you. It isthe ability to have passion for the smallthings that make the whole picturethen dive in where you are and enjoy it.
Just because my husband is Frenchand his family has lived in France forgenerations does not mean that I immediately grasped the subtle differences between our cultures. Ittook time to blend them into a happymedium. The brocante taught me mosteverything I know about France. Thatsounds sweeping, and perhaps a bitsilly, but it is true. I learned to speakFrench at the brocante because I waspassionate about old things, I wantedto understand the things that attractedme, where they came from, how oldthey were. They had stories, and thosestories spoke to me.

Light hues, the scent of lavender and treasured antiques combine for a garden-freshlook inspired by France’s undeniably romantic countryside.
Similarly muted tones of blue, cream andwhite create the background for a style thatwelcomes fresh air. Touches of contrast balance the look and give a rustic appeal reminiscent of garden gates. Incorporatingfresh florals in a variety of containers continuesthe quintessential theme, while casual furnishings invite friends and family to gather.
Design tips:WORN WOOD: Opt for chipped paint, agedstain or distressed finishes to convey acasual atmosphere.

COASTAL
Bring the resort home with a style reminiscentof the idyllic coastal escape known for luxury.
White is a necessity in a design inspired by SaintTropez. It creates a cool yet chic environment perfectly reflective of its muse. Pastel colors infusea relaxed and easy-going look without compromising the chic quality of the design.Delicately introducing these pastels through walltreatments and accents requires the light approachof a pale, two-tone wall or toile de jouy wallpaper. These offer traditionally French style withoutweighing down the casual essence.
Design tips:RUGS: Texture and color are combined with theuse of rugs. Add to hardwood flooring for a casual touch.
CLASSICS: Highlight the traditional by featuringa white-upholstered bergère.
TRIM: A coat of white paint will accentuate thedetail of baseboards, crown molding or trim..

SURROUNDED BY OLIVE GROVES AND OVERLOOKING THE SEASITS A GORGEOUS FRENCHHOME. The home is filled withthings collected from generationspast, as well as beloved art piecesand books. It uses color to invitepeace, creativity and rest. This is thehome of Enrica Stabile, known as“Pantasina,” in Liguria, France.
Enrica used local materials, suchas slate and marble, in Pantasina’sdesign. She demonstrates her love of balance—combining the exquisite and the ordinary—bybringing traditional pieces and heirlooms together with more decorative art pieces. Busts, portraitsand painted plates complement simple wood furniture and scatteredcoastal accents.
Enrica owns her own design store,L’Utile e il Dilettevole (The Useful andEnjoyable), which seeks to combineseeming opposites into a creativegetaway for the soul.
THE FOYER’S CLASSIC
FRENCH STYLE includes portraits and hanging plates. Italso integrates the seaside location with small accents ofseashells and coral-shaped metal figures.

“You need courage to mix styles and colors, andwe need to eliminate what does not convince us.The house is our refuge, and like a dress we love, itmust look and feel good,” Enrica says.
Entering the house feels as though you have beenmagically transported back in time to the Frenchprovincial age.
The foyer presents a neutral color scheme andshowcases decorative family heirlooms, such as formal portraits and painted plates.
“The house has been furnished by retrieving andadapting old family furniture together with someunsold pieces from her store,” says stylist Alessandra Ianniello.

5 TIPSFOR DEVELOPING Acohesive style:1. Let the environment speak. Whether incolor palette or with materials, consult thearea where you live and draw from itsresources and heritage.
2. Embrace balance. Combine both old andnew pieces, plants and metal materials, decorative and solid pieces. The combination creates interest.
3. Choose a palette. Select a color paletteand bring the main color to the forefront ineach room, while incorporating others on alesser scale.
4. Don’t be afraid to combine styles. Twodifferent types of fabrics can work together as long as color palettes overlap andthe patterns are balanced by solids.
5. Build from a base. Whether your homehas an existing architecture that informs thestyle or not, use it to your advantage bycomplementing what already exists.

The kitchen, sitting room and dining room combine to form a longrectangle. The synthesis betweensimple, country-like style and strikingdecorative flavor reflects Enrica’scontinued quest for balance. Still, each room is unique to its function. The kitchen, playful in its assemblage, has a palette inspired bygarden-green hues. Pots hang in theopen, and detailed tiles adorn thebacksplash. Exposed wooden ceilingbeams, large windows, ethereal curtains and a natural wood table alllend the space to relaxing and hosting friends.
In the sitting room, rest and pleasure have their day. The walls area calm, light blue, and inviting book-shelves coerce guests to pick a bookand settle into a deep, leather arm-chair. The room also offers a moreformal seating area for post-dinnercoffee. Past the living room, doubledoors lead to the master bedroom, which echoes the neutral palette ofthe rest of the house.
In the midst of the quiet hues, strategic accents erupt in a burst ofvibrant teal—an echo of the oceanthat lies just outside the room’s largewindows. These splashes, along withthe Spanish wrought-iron bed, reflectthe designer’s varied, yet completelyreconciled tastes.
IN THE MASTER BEDROOM,a vibrant blue color scheme creates a brilliant contrast with thesoft, lighter furniture. Large windows let in copious amounts oflight, complimenting the naturalwood-beamed ceilings.

FOR CREATING A HOME that reflects yourpersonal style:1. SHOWCASE YOURCOLLECTIBLES. Whatever yourhobbies may be, use the piecesyou collect. Whether hand-painted tiles or baskets, these personal touches will show yourstyle in your home.
2. FACILITATE LIGHT. If youhave large windows, don’t coverthem with curtains. Let thembrighten your rooms and yourfavorite pieces with natural light.
3. BRING THE OUTDOORSINSIDE. For every style, thereexists a complimentary plant. Pickplants to which you are naturallydrawn and fill your house with asmany as you can commit to nur-turing. They will bring color and vibrancy to your rooms.
4. EASY ACCESS. If your hobbiesinclude reading or cooking, placeshelves in easy-to-reach placesand have step stools on hand.

JAMIE JEEVES ALWAYSDREAMED OF FINDING THEPERFECT VACATION HOME.
During a brief visit to the village ofFontevielle, he fell in love with thehotel where he stayed: a ten-room,1740s French townhouse.
The house had fallen into disrepairover the years, and Jamie knew that it would take grit to restore. Hehauled away rubble, stripped out the plumbing, replaced doors and restructured the kitchen. As he power-washed the exterior and pulled
up the carpets that hid the originaltile, the house’s ancient charm beganto reawaken.
Now, the dilapidated hotel has beentransformed into a beautiful six-bedroom family vacation home.
Jamie enlisted his mother, Sallie, formuch of the renovation and design.A former antiques dealer and decorator, Sallie had several houserestorations under her belt. Jamiecredits his mother’s knowledge ofrefurbishment trades for the impressive turnaround of the project.

5 WAYSto achieve
RELAXED ELEGANCE1. Stay Soft. Refined taste doesn’t have to
mean stiff. Sallie recommends the use of plainwhite cotton on beds and slipcovers; it washes easily and adds a modern flair.
2. Mix and Match. An eclectic grouping ofconversation pieces reflects all of the
different personalities that will gather in yourhome. Whenever possible, choose
decorations with a story behind them.
3. Lighten Up. Jamie and Sallie’s neutralpalette keeps the home from feeling
confining. Layering whites and tans with curtains and bookshelves brings a sense of
over-arching calm and harmony over theassorted furniture and knickknacks.
4. Be Open-Minded. Jamie took care to simplify the layout of the home. No longer asmall hotel with confined spaces, the house
stretches on and invites the eye to gaze as faras it wishes. French windows continue the
open feel right out into the courtyard.
5. Leave Room to Grow. Bringing the outsideinside will keep your home from feeling
stuffy, even in cold weather. Choose a fewpotted plants with enough personality to
balance more subdued decor.
“In the end, it took two years, butit would have been much longerwithout her help,” Jamie says.
Jamie and Sallie evoked abreezy, playful mood in the homeby working from a light, airypalette. They replaced the darktiles on the ground floor withJerusalem tiles that coordinatewith the light stone walls.
Relying on neutral tones andsimple materials allowed Jamie torestore the elegance of the homewhile still keeping to his budget.Jamie stretched huis budget bychoosing simple white tiles for thebathrooms “It would have cost afortune to put in marble, and thedifference is minimal.”

He also used the leftover tiles tomake the bright, modern-feelingkitchen countertops.
Most of the furniture in the housewas collected by the family overyears of travels. Chairs and sofasfrom England blend effortlessly withSpanish classics and Frenchantiques. The vintage pieces stunningly contrast with the lightdecor and white-painted wood.
Sallie often finds old chandeliers, lamps, china and art in her travels, which she uses to add to the comfortable, rustic look. She madeall of the curtains in the housefrom old linen sheets and quilts, and turns scraps of old fabric intocushions and seat covers.
“It’s most interesting to me touse a mix of textiles rather than totry to match everything perfectlylike a hotel,” she says.
The climate in southern Francevaries greatly from summer towinter, and Jamie was sure to renovate the fireplaces in additionto adding electric heating. Sallie isfond of the new kitchen terrace.
“Even in the winter the sunwarms that space enough to havelunch outside,” Sallie says.
In the heat of the summer, thefront courtyard stays shady andwelcoming, giving the family thechance to relax in the fresh airyear-round.
Jamie created a relaxed, family-friendly and unpretentious home.“A holiday home should put you atease,” he says. “My wife and Ihave two young children, and wedon’t want to spend our holidaysworrying about breakables or fingerprints. Life is too short!”

THE SEEMINGLY MAGICAL ATMOSPHEREof Provence sets the stage for interior designer Enrica Stabile’ssummer home. The atmosphere isunlike anywhere else, where sun-shine, nostalgic colors, classic per-fumes and picturesque landscapescombine. Here began many greatarchitectural traditions, whererural buildings became icons, suchas the mas (provincial farmhouse)and the bastide (small town).
While traveling throughProvence on her way to Avignon,Enrica saw a mas and immediatelyfell in love. According to aninscription on a garden sundial, the home was built in 1860.
Enrica describes the home asbeing a derelict, poor thing whenshe first laid eyes on the now-restored provincial farmhouse.
“It was falling down enough tolook ugly, though it also lookedbeautiful; I would say it had aninterior beauty.

Against my family’s will, I decidedit would become our summer house,”Enrica says.
That first summer in the homefound the family with few furnishingsand much work to be done.
“At first, there where just fourgarden tables that we moved in andout of the house, depending on whatwe needed to do,” Enrica says.
In the meantime, the restorationworks went forward. The roof wasextensively repaired and the roomswere restored. One after another, new spaces were created by tearingdown the home’s old, tired walls. Two living rooms were added, onewith portraits of women on the walls, the other with portraits of men.
What was once the barn wastransformed to become the kitchen, highlighting the ancient beams. Thetool shed was given new life as averanda, and the winter gardenbecame Enrica’s daughter’s bedroom.
“In here, everything representsme,” Enrica says.
Though the interior received muchattention, the exterior was anythingbut forgotten. The windows on thefront of the house were restored andset in a row, and the façade wasrefinished and freshly painted inoriginal, period-appropriate colors.Bit by bit, the home found new life.
“Nothing was left to chance,”Enrica says. “The whole interventionwas planned following a precise ruleof mine: creating an enfilade, a seriesof rooms one after the other, so thatfrom the east you could see to thewest without breaking continuity.”
Each and every detail of the homehas been carefully thought out.Paintings, antique Turkish sinks,Victorian tiles in the kitchen andOccitan furniture combine for anexquisitely beautiful design.

DEVOTEES OF FRENCH STYLENEED LOOK NO FURTHER FORINSPIRATION than Virginia-baseddesigner Elizabeth Cabell and her companyCabell Design Studio. Elizabeth’s designsperfectly blend luxurious minutiae withgrand structures, creating the style’squintessential je ne sais quoi. For those seekingthis style, Elizabeth recommends blendingFrench opulence with livable comforts.
“We add these details in the texture andluminosity of textiles, detailed trim on chairhems, ottoman fringes, textural walltreatments and sparkly accessories. It createsan opulence that is not overwhelming orintimidating, but rather one that iswelcoming and manageable,” Elizabeth says.
In Elizabeth’s designs, each room lovinglyand meticulously shows a particular aspect ofFrench style. Warm, golden walls in the livingroom and rich, texturized wallpaper in thebedroom evoke French aristocracy and act asa springboard for the vibrancy of each room.
Statement pieces inspire many ofElizabeth’s sumptuous designs. “By placingeven a single piece of French-style furnitureor textile into an interior environment that isloaded with other influences, the result iselegant, refined and grounded,” Elizabethsays. By designing a space that fits thepractical needs of her client while offeringthem the inherent grandeur of Frencharchitecture, her approach truly brings old-world France to the modern home.
ELIZABETH IS NOT AFRAID TO INCORPORATE
LARGE STATEMENT PIECES, such as these intricatelycarved doors, in order to achieve French grandeur.

DESIGN MAINTENANCEELIZABETH TALKS ABOUT AN ALL-TOO-OFTEN OVERLOOKEDASPECT OF DESIGN
Elizabeth says that maintaining andupdating a room’s design is as importantas creating the original design. Her tipsfor keeping your design fresh are smaller,easily-achieved projects:
-Repaint a room.-Introduce new end tables.-Alter the accessories.-Swap out the pillows.-Add new lamps.
“Editing a design over time is equally asimportant as its initial creation.”
RICH, GOLDEN TONES carry throughout thisroom from the curtains, to the light fixtures, evendown to the accent rug.

PERFECTIONA COUPLE USES THEIR FRENCH TRAVEL EXPERIENCE TO INSPIRE
A STYLE ALL THEIR OWN.BY HANNAH ROBERTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE GIANNETTI AND LISA ROMEREIN
AGED TO
BROOKE GIANNETTIFELL IN LOVE WITHFRENCH STYLE duringher first trip to Paris. Sheadored the leather clubchairs, the collections ofbooks and the paintedfurniture. As she and herhusband Steve perused theFrench flea markets, theybegan to hone in on aspecific genre of age-wornpiece that they saw often.Upon realizing that thisstyle lacked a label, theydecided to invent their own,and Patina Style was born.
“Patina” as a term refersto the sheen that developson wood, metals and othermaterials as they age, whichperfectly reflects Brookeand Steve’s goal in theircollaborative quest foritems. “We noticed thatEuropean interiors weren’tabout perfection,” Brookeobserves. “Their furniturepieces were handed downfrom generation togeneration.” The naturalmaterials used in craftingmany of the pieces, theydiscovered, aged beautifullywith use over time.

The characteristics of Patina style piecesvary, but in general boil down to threequalifying aspects. The piece must be madefrom natural materials—whether leather, wood, stone, metal or linen. Its proportionsmust be beautiful and graceful, rather thanstout or bulky. And finally, the colors of thepiece must be inspired by nature. Together, this combination evokes the light yet
weathered character that gives the stylesuch a high level of visual interest.
Brooke says that she generally goesshopping with the goal of finding a specificitem, “but I can change my mind if I findan amazing piece.”
Once, while searching for a buffet for aclient’s dining room, Brooke and Stevestumbled upon a gorgeous draper’s table.

“EVERY ROOM IN THEHOUSE SHOULD START WITHTHE DREAM OF THE FUTURELIFE IN THAT ROOM.”
--In love with the beautifulwood and the stunningdetailing, they determined torepurpose it. They addedbaskets underneath for storage, transforming the draper’s tableinto a functional buffet with afantastic, intriguing look.
Brooke still loves French fleamarkets best, but she’s alsofound markets and antiquesstores around Los Angeleswhere she particularly enjoysshopping for her clients andher personal projects. Whenthey can get away, she andSteve take trips northward tosunny, antique-store-filledSanta Barbara.
Brooke’s best advice toaspiring designers is to begin toplan a room by imagining whatwill happen in that space. Is ita cozy room for just the familyto watch television or read? Isit a place for entertaining largegroups of friends?
From this foundation, building a unique style for thatspace will feel natural andresult in a comfortable, personalized finished product.
“Every room in the house,”Brooke says, “should start withthe dream of the future life inthat room.”

WHEN CAROLYNWESTBROOK MOVED INTOHER 1850S SOUTHERNPLANTATION HOUSE, shewondered if it would ever feel likehome. Now she can’t imagine livinganywhere else.
Carolyn transformed her housefrom a dilapidated fixer-upper into anelegant and personal family home. She made sure that it reflected theinterests and personalities of itsinhabitants; her decorating mantra isto “create a home that reflects thespirit of you.”
In her book Through the French Door,Carolyn invites her readers to tourthe elegant French-inspired interiorsthat she has come to love. They rangefrom a city home with a grand
entrance hall, to a rustic fisherman’scottage, to her own now-restoredTexas plantation.
Her design tastes and tips will provevaluable to anyone looking for waysmake their space more graceful, livelyand overall interesting.
“I am constantly looking around, refreshing and rearranging, and per-haps working in a new treasure hereand there,” Carolyn says.
Carolyn’s style weaves togetherseamlessly, through the use of eclecticodds and ends. It is elegant yet rustic, sophisticated but comfortable.
She prefers timeworn beauty tochain-store accessories, as hersouthern roots give her an inherentappreciation for passed-downheirlooms and pieces that tell a story.
A WEEPING FERN AND
POTTED PLANT add vital greenery that perfectly livens up thespace. Carolyn’s layering of a vintagemirror and framed picture on thetable provides a decorative backdropfor the decanters and cream-coloredbooks. Combined with the seatingarea, her design creates a comfortable place for conversation.
VELVET CURTAINS adorn the wall, providing a stunning and luxurious backdrop
for the room. Contrasting linens turn the bedinto a relaxing and cool space in the midst of
the rich, warm room.

Memorabilia from aValentine’s trip to France andleather-bound books thatonce belonged to hergrandfather are the thingsthat bring Carolyn’shome to life and fill eachroom with depth and meaning.
“The French have the ability tomake their rooms look like they justsort of happened,” Carolyn says.
In her world, achieving this lookrequires a purposeful hunt. Scopingout treasures from tag sales andantique stores “that you love andyou love to look at” is essential. She also recommends periodicallyupdating the look to avoid anyfeeling of stagnance.
“I feel it is important to keepyour interior fresh,” Carolynsays. “Anyone can do this, and you don’t even haveto go to France.”
A SIDE TABLE draped in gorgeousprinted fabric doubles as a display

PROVENCALARCHITECTUREIS DRENCHED INHISTORY. In NoëlleDuck’s A Home inProvence, the reader getsa glimpse of the gradualways in which the climate, culture andclass systems contributedto what has become ourmodern understandingof Provencal style.
The book delves intothe different classes ofFrench people living inthis seaside city, and thedifferent regional factorsthat contributed to theirhome design. With thecity on one side and thesea on the other, thelocals of Provencedeveloped a spellbindingcross between thenatural and the elegant.
Noëlle writes, “Thearchitecture of [many of]these seventeenth- andeighteenth-century houses was based onParisian styles, but adapted to the Provencalsetting and climate bylocal craftsmen.”

“THE PROVENCAL HOMEIS IN PERFECT HARMONY WITHITS SURROUNDINGS.”
While the city of Provencemay have a theme unto itself, there is no uniformity orrigidity in its style. Fishermenlive harmoniously, yetdistinctly from local farmersand merchants.
From miniature cabanonswhere workers rested in theheat of the day, to the hôtelsparticuliers which were“intended to show the wealthand good taste of the owner,”the continual Provencal themesof soft colors and aged beautyremain constant.
The initial design andeventual worn look of manyhouses in Provence are bothgreatly influenced by theseaside location.
“Roofs always slope gently,as there is little rainfall and theroof needs to provide the leastpossible wind resistance,”Noëlle writes.
Provencal homes emit a typeof strong gentleness, with thesolid stone awash in light, reflective colors. Although thehues remain largely subtle, they carry a special sort ofboldness in their detail andunabashed aging.
From the structures andinteriors to gardens andaccents, the warmth andhistory of Provence make thecity seem at once both ancientand timeless.

FRENCH-STYLE DÉCOR? THE ELEMENTS ARE EASIER TO PULL TOGETHERTHAN YOU THINK. TAKE A LOOK THROUGH THE HISTORY OF ONE

In anage when such treasures canappear in flea markets or online,it’s easy to forget the far-reachingimpact of classic French elementsin well-appointed homes.

exactly what elements contribute tothe flair and panache we associatewith this elegant look. “It is hard notto fall under the influence of theFrench, who bring inherent eleganceand uncommon grace to everythingthey do,” Phillips writes.
“Inspired by their rich cultural heritage and the breathtaking beautyof their country, their celebratedapproach to living, dressing, and dining well is as distinctive as theirdecorating, which is undeniably theessence of French chic.”

“Just like the little black dress, an artfully layered white-on-white palette is always instyle.” This timeless color scheme is clean, fresh and suits any interior no matter thesize, shape, light or limitations.
“Quality matters.” The French discipline themselves to forgo bargains in favor oflong-lasting investments.
“Slivers of the past give the impression that settings have evolved over time, thuscreating memorably chic rooms.” French homes, nestled in the midst of a historicallyrich country, have many antiques from which to choose. For us, the lesson is todecorate slowly and purposefully.
“Furniture with ancestral ties has long taken a place of pride in homes.” Provenance,or the history and “story” of a piece, takes precedence over all else in French décor. This proves that French elegance is neither stuffy nor overwrought, but rathersentimental and thoughtful.
“Given the diverse assortment of antiques from which to choose, it is clear thatthere is no one way to decorate any more than there is one way to live.” Frenchprovincial. Parisian sophistication. Maison elegance. The beauty of modern Frenchstyle lies in choosing elements that speak to us, and creating our own vision.

ACHIEVING THE FRENCHLOOK IS THE HOLY GRAILOF PERSONAL STYLE. Withconfidence and a touch of whimsyit is quite simple to accomplish.Follow a beauty regiment heavy onskin care instead of plastic surgery. Dress by focusing on the right combination of pieces, not fallingprey to trends. Put interior designersout of business and create a homewith a mix of elements that are allyour own. Flirt more. Drink winewith lunch. Follow your own rules.
Mireille Guiliano, best sellingauthor of French Women Don’t Get Fatand the current French Women Don’tGet Facelifts, offers the followingwisdoms on acquiring French style:
STYLE, I have come to realize, is themanifestation of an attitude, and apersonal style is a gestalt of manythings, all of them concerned withyour attitude toward yourself andyour surroundings.
STYLE IS HARD TO DEFINE—it isbeing your own brand, but it’s bornfrom a talent for living or joie de vivre, and it can be innate or unconscious even though you knowit when you see it. It is made up ofindividuality, vivacity, passion, breeziness, enthusiasm and curiosity. This may explain whyFrench women tend to be such stubborn individualists.
DRESSING WITH STYLE, havingstyle, knows no age and is a cocktailmade with equal parts sensibility, audacity (not taken to the extreme)and some natural class. The latter isperhaps the hardest to get, thoughwe all aspire to it. Isn’t the best compliment a man can make about a woman “quelle classe” (what style)?
THE BEST STYLE IS AUTHENTIC,natural and appears effortless. Awoman may forget she has it, butwhen she is noticed, she is remindedthat she has it. Voilà.
