The Eagle Mountain — Woodfibre Gas Pipeline ProjectFortisBC is currently working to determine the best option to expand a portion of its existing natural gas transmission system to serve a proposed small scale LNG export facility at the former Woodfibre mill site just outside of Squamish.
To provide service to the proposed Woodfibre LNG facility, FortisBC will need to construct a 52 km pipeline expansion beginning in north Coqitlam and ending at the Woodfibre site.
The project will require upgrades to FortisBC’s existing compressor stations at Eagle Mountain in Coquitlam and at Port Mellon. A new compressor station is required in or near Squamish.
(14-078.02 5/2014)
Pipeline expansion detailsThe gas pipeline expansion will require approximately 52 km of 24-inch diameter pipeline beginning in north Coquitlam (at the north end of the Coquitlam watershed) and ending approximately 11 km west of Squamish at the former Woodfibre Mill site. Generally, the expansion will follow the existing gas pipeline route.

Eagle Mountain compressor stationThe existing FortisBC Eagle Mountain compressor station in Coquitlam currently operates with three gas-powered turbines, producing approximately 21,000 horsepower to compress natural gas.
The project requires the addition of two more compressors which will add about 35,000 horsepower.
The new compressors will likely be driven by electricity.

Squamish compressor stationIn order to provide adequate compression to the system, FortisBC is working to determine the location of a new compressor station in or near Squamish.
This station would likely operate with electric compressors. FortisBC is currently assessing the area to determine the best location for a compressor station. We are currently reviewing two options: building on a pre-existing property that FortisBC owns at 1102 Pioneer Way or purchasing a new property.

Port Mellon compressor stationThe Port Mellon compressor station on the Sunshine Coast currently uses one gas-powered turbine, which produces approximately 7,000 horsepower to compress natural gas.
The project will require an additional turbine which will share the 7,000 horsepower load. This ensures that the facility will provide reliable service for years to come during all possible operating conditions.
(14-078.02 5/2014)
Protecting the Squamish EstuaryAt FortisBC, we are responsible in all our operations and diligently mitigate impact to the environment.
FortisBC proposes the use of horizontal directional drilling technology (HDD) to install a segment of the pipeline through the Estuary.
HDD means that the pipe would be installed by drilling underneath the estuary, minimizing any impacts to the surface.
(14-078.02 5/2014)
Ensuring we minimize construction impactsGas line planning is a multi-step process that begins years in advance of actual construction. During the planning phase, we engage with local stakeholders and conduct extensive field surveys to evaluate environmental factors, development and local conditions.
During construction, we use special techniques to minimize disruptions, particularly around environmentally sensitive areas.
Horizontal directional drilling allows us to install gas lines without having to dig a trench.
(14-078.02 5/2014)
Committed to well-protected infrastructureOur dedicated and highly trained employees work to ensure that our pipelines and surrounding areas are well-protected.
FortisBC has an integrity management plan — the main tool we use to ensure the integrity of our transmission and distribution systems.
This plan is a comprehensive and systematic way to provide effective detection and remediation activities, and is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure continued public safety.
(14-078.02 5/2014)
First NationsDeveloping mutually-beneficial working relationships with First Nations is important to us. Understanding, respect, open communication and trust continue to be our aim when working with First Nations groups throughout the province.
Our team members are actively involved with the following local First Nations:
• Squamish Nation
• Tsleil-Watuth Nation
• Kwikwetlem First Nation
• Musqueam First Nation
(14-078.02 5/2014)
Local benefitsIf the project proceeds, it will provide benefits to existing FortisBC customers, tax revenues to the Regional District and District of Squamish and local, regional and Provincial benefits through the provision of labour, equipment, goods and services during construction and operations.
It is currently estimated that the project could result in up to:
• $75 million in jobs
• $100 million of goods and services to be provided in B.C.
