Ways to Recognize Military Family Appreciation Month

As we celebrate the annual November Military Family Appreciation Month, here are a few ideas of ways to join our Senior Adult Ministries to show our thanks for military families:

For Local Military Families:

1. Volunteer your time. You may not be able to bring their loved one home, but you can offer to spend time with the family left behind (babysit, run errands, etc.).

2. Leave an anonymous care package at the door. 3. Listen. Take the time to find out what the family really needs.

For Military Families Far Away:

1. You can say supportive words from a distance, too. A phone call or old fashioned card is a great way to brighten a service member’s day.

2. A long distance care package is a great idea, too. A care package for a friend does not have to be expensive or even time consuming. In some cases, like this one, it really is the thought that counts.

3. Not into care packages? Send another kind of surprise. The possibilities are endless – and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Check out local Groupon deals and get him/her something that way. Mail him/her a traditional gift certificate for a local restaurant.

Taking care of your long distance friends may require some creativity, but it’s not impossible.

EXTRA: When you see him/her in the checkout line, hand them a small piece of money with “Thanks for your service.” Or when you see them in the line at a “fast food” restaurant or gas station, pay for their coffee or soft drink.
