Formative Assessment: Students using response clickers for reading comprehension
The first step in the process will be for students will be to learn how to log-in and use the
iRespond clickers. Students will be shown how to press the buttons on the responder and then
enter a three letter code to connect the responder to the wireless transponder, located at the front
of the room connected to a laptop. If the three letter code is entered correctly, the responder will
have a green light.
Students will then be directed to get their second grade literature books out and turn to the
story “Corduroy.” As students read the story, a powerpoint presentation that is uses questions
based on the story Corduroy will be show through an LCD projector. Questions will be
presented in the following format: Yes/no, true/false and multiple choice questions. Once a
question appears, students will be prompted using the iRespond clicker to choose the answer
a,b,c,d, or e.
As the class reads through the story, responses can be gauged based on the students level of
understanding of the story. By using the responders, opportunities for re-teaching will be
examined throughout the story based on the responses. If the whole class has a combined score
that is greater than 70%, then the class will read continue reading the story. If the whole class
has a combined score lower than 70%, then the passage will be read once again for
understanding.
Once the lesson is finished, the data from the iRespond clickers will be analyzed to find
which questions had the lowest responses.
