Notes from Fr. John
T oday we celebrate the Feast of Christ The King. This is the last Sunday of the Church year. Next week, we begin our story again with the season of Advent. This is also a special week for the Church of Chicago as Archbishop Cupich
becomes a member of the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Cupich has asked us this weekend to focus on the renewal of the church through personal renewal. The Renew My Church initiative is a call for Catholics to take up the work of the church once again by lives of service. It is not the responsibility of our Cardinal, the priests, or local ministers to move the Church forward. Being a Catholic is not a one day a week spectator sport. Christ the King came so that all of us may be empowered to live out his message each and every day in every aspect of our lives. We ask God to move us from complacency to action. This week as a nation and Church, we celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a time to stop what ever rollercoaster we are on in life and give thanks to God for all of our blessings. Difficulties seem to cast bigger shadows than blessings. We can list our hurts, slights, or difficulties, yet we take for granted all the blessings in our lives. This week as a country we put our blessings first. We have two celebrations for Thanksgiving. The first is Tuesday,
November 22, at 7:00 PM when we have a combined prayer service with St. Kieran. The service will combine both our choirs in song and prayer and Fr. O’Mara will lead the service. The second celebration will be on Thanksgiving Day itself. The mass on Thanksgiving will be at 9:00 AM. Please join us for these celebrations. This weekend we have a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The money from the collection helps grass root organizations work to help themselves and their communities. As we count our blessings this week, please consider a gift for those less fortunate. It is a hand up for those in need. Please be as generous as you can today. This week the Union Street Gallery will begin its Handmade Market for the holidays. If you are looking for original gifts for family and friends, I encourage you to visit the market. Many of our parishioners have studios in the Union Street Gallery and will be selling their art during this sale. Go to unionstreetgallery.org for more information. Finally, congratulations to the Marian Catholic Girls Volleyball team for winning the state championship last weekend. I think it was appropriate as we near the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe that Marian Catholic and Marian Central were in the finals. Our Blessed Mother was going to come out on top, one way or another.

Make a Joyful Noise this Thanksgiving Season
During this season of thankfulness and praise, we will celebrate a special Thanksgiving Evening Prayer of readings, psalms, and prayers. On Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, November 22, beginning at 7 PM, the choirs and musicians of both St. Agnes and St. Kieran will lead the combined parish families in celebration of the season. This service will be held at St. Kieran Church in Chicago Heights. Parishioners of both parishes are invited to join in contemplation, prayer, and joyful song. Please plan on being a part of this special Evening Prayer as we together give praise and thanks to our abundant Lord!
