T h e S p e c ta to r S e e sJack H arris Says He Doesn’t W ant To Die; And Who Does?

There is no use w riting editorials about peace, or anyth ing else, as long as the re are a le rt w rite rs like Jack Harris of the Hutchinson News to do our w riting fo r us.

H arris is becoming nationally famous fo r an editorial th ree thousands w ords long in which he pictures the folly of w ar under the caption, "I Don’t W ant to Die." S enator Capper h as had it included in th e congressional record. The gist of it is given in th e following ex tra c t:

I'm 37 years old. If w a r comes th e boys in th e ir tw enties will be shoved into uniform s first, bu t my health and circumstances a re such th a t I 'll be subjec t to th e second call.

I love my country, but I love living more. I don' t w ant to get poison gas in my lungs. I don' t w ant a piece of shrapnel in my stomach. I don’t w ant m y legs riddled by m achine gun bullets. I don 't w ant m aggots craw ling in my brains th a t have been laid open by a sp lin ter from an ae ria l bomb, I don’t w ant to die.

Because I am 37 an d w an t to live, I ha te those who have brought the United S tates closer to w ar today th a n it was in 1915. I w asn’t old enough to figh t then but I was old enough to w atch the w ar hysteria being roused until it tem pted the United S tates in to a ruthless struggle fo r pow er in Europe. And I w as old enough to see w hat it cost us then and since.

T h a t's w hy I h a te those who today are deliberately stir- ring emotions in favor of one side o r ano ther in th a t bloody European conflict, which again is on the verge o f breaking out of council cham bers and onto battle fields. O fficials of our governm ent w ho already have ta k en sentim ental sides, members of Communist and Fascist organizations alike, those w ith munitions to sell, open and secret agents of o th e r nations, professional busy bodies, and all o thers in this country who have been know ingly rousing passions I dam n alike, because I do not w an t to die.

The officials of our governm ent who are issuing inflam m atory statem ents, those w ho ta lk o f boycotts, the ones who promote dem onstrations against one foreign nation o r another, the Joe D oaks who already a re tak ing sides in a f igh t on the o ther side of the world th a t isn’t any of our business, and th e misguided zealots who are spreading hate in press, pulpit, and rostrum a re guiltie r o f treason than A aron Burr. Treason to those of us who may have to die.

I t 's a troubled w orld, and th e U nited S tates can’t isolate itself from the strife . But its defense isn’t p lanes and battle ships, o r soldier* having th e ir heads shot off on some o ther continent. Its only safeguard as to get so busy finding jobs for its ten million out of w ork th a t it w on 't have any tim e fo r its neighbors' unconscionable quarrels . T ha t alone w ill p ro tect the A m erican system and A m erica's millions of young men of d ra f t age.

T hey don’t w an t to die. Nor do I.
