FOCUS+ GSM/GPRS Smart Modems
Designed for a rapidly changing gas industry, the Focus+ is a key product of AMR solutions for Itron commercial and industrial (C&I) gas electronic devices. This smart modem provides transparent communication between data collection software tools and devices in the field, using either GSM or GPRS communication networks. Thanks to an intuitive, user-friendly interface, the Focus+ is both easy to install and easy to operate. Focus+ offers gas network monitoring capabilities with up to four digital inputs that can be used for alarm retransmission by SMS. The Focus+ platform is available in two variants: Focus+ and Focus+ ATEX; Focus+ ATEX can be installed directly in hazardous zone 1 areas.

DESCRIPTION
Focus+ family of modems includes Focus+ and Focus+ ATEX that can be used with smart C&I meters (Dattus), volume converter (Corus) or SCV measurer (ANGus).
Both are GSM/GPRS modem, share a common architecture, common human/machine interface and most operational features.
The main difference between the two models is the installation area.
Focus+ is approved as associated device, thus it must be installed in safe area.
Focus+ ATEX is approved for installation in hazardous area (zone 1), ideal for reducing installation costs and risks of vandalism.
Focus+ ATEX is only battery powered, thus the GSM modem must be activated for a limited period of the day to transmit data and achieve maximal energy efficiency.
Focus+ can be main or solar powered, which means that the modem can be active permanently.
Both Focus+ and Focus+ ATEX are able to use Inbound connection in GPRS modem to predifined IP address in order to overcome private and dynamic IP addresses provided to modem from usual GSM/GPRS Data subcriptions.
Focus+ family is able to provide gas network monitoring with their digital inputs and cantransmit their alarms, but also those from Corus volume converter, through SMS to a central system or field technicians cellular phone.

Up to 4 Corus can be connected to a single Focus+ with RS485 bus and a maximal distance of 200m between each Corus and Focus+. This solution can be used only if communication protocol supports device addresses (example Modbus RTU)

Alarms
Focus+ or Focus+ ATEX manage several unique alarm types, which can be transmitted by SMS to designated cellular phone numbers. Alarm start and end states create a new entry in the events logs. Alarm types include:
» Low battery
» External power supply error
» Change of digital input status (1 to 2 or 4)
» Modem error
» SIM card error
» GSM/GPRS network error
Focus+ and Focus+ ATEX are also able to transmit via SMS or inbound calls the alarms of Corus to cellular phone (SMS) or central supervision system (Supervisor+).
Diagnostic Indicators
The Focus+ or Focus+ ATEX provide several counters in order to ease diagnostic among which:
» Provider with best signal in the area
» Modem power duration
» GSM communication duration
» Total amount of data traffic (both received and transmitted)
Logs
The Focus+ or Focus+ ATEX provide two logs that are used to trace events or information during the product lifetime:
» Events log containing all major events occurring during the product lifetime are recorded. This log is circular and can handle up to 200 records.
» Parameters log containing all critical parameters modifications are traced.
WinLog GPRS Software
Used for local communications through the Focus+ optical port or a TCP/IP connection, WinLog GPRS:
» Displays real-time (or ”live”) data
» Configures general settings for Focus+ systems
» Identifies communication flows (data-scope mode)
» Displays events and parameter logs
