Floriana - basic information

•Population: 2600 inhabitants (approx.)

•Size: area of 133 acres (from Portes des Bombes to Valletta City Gates)

•Motto: Flores mulcent aurae et educat imber - Flowers are caressed by the breeze and nourished by the rain

Floriana - The Green City - introduction

• Floriana is situated next to the capital of Malta, Valletta.

• The origin of the city goes back to year 1634, when Grand Master Antoine de Paule invited Italian engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani of Macerata to design fortifications preventing from future attacks of the enemies.

• In 1721 the fortifications has been completed with the length of more than 4 kms.

• Contemporary Floriana has over 15 public gardens. Amongst other Maltese cities, Floriana can be considered as the greenest city on the island.

Gardens of Floriana

•Most of Floriana gardens are located on bastions

•Rest of gardens are located in city centre giving peaceful and recreational space

Argotti Gardens• Built in 1774. In 1805

converted from private gardens of the Knights to botanical gardens

• During the Knights period Argotti Gardens were used for medical purposes.

• Nowadays part of the garden there is a special botanical section administered by the University of Malta.

The Mall Garden

• The Mall Garden is situated at the Floriana city centre

• Builded in 1656, originally were used by Knights to play ball game called ''Palla a Maglio'' - sort of cricket at the time

• Garden situated below Argotti Gardens containing fruit trees, roses and a historical central fountain

• Sa Maison Garden is known for its military heritage

• Garden holds the name of writer who was born in Floriana.

• From this garden we can admire a great view of the Grand Harbour

Garden was recently renovated by the Floriana Local Council

Vilhena Garden

• Visitors can admire the Grand Harbour view.

• The garden was built on the initative of Floriana Local Council and inaugurated in October 2000

King George V Recreational Grounds

• King George V Recreational Grounds were built in 1930 and it was the first garden in Malta which were converted into playing field.

• Tourists and inhabitants can find different sorts of flowers and palm trees

Floriana and Macerata Twinned

•Floriana and Macerata are linked by Pietro Paolo Floriani. He was an architect who designed and built the fortifications surrounding Valletta. After that his name was given to our locality.

•The twinning agreement between the two cities was signed on 1st July 2007 in Floriana.

Floriana is also famous for national and international events held in Pjazza San Publju
