    1. Projectoutline(intendedoutcomes,etc)

    TheBuryStEdmundspartnershipconsistsofthreespecialschools,PriorySchool,Riverwalk

    SchoolandHillsideSchool,andtheSchoolofFoundationStudiesatWestSuffolkCollege.The

    shortpractical

    and

    vocational

    course

    in

    Painting

    and

    Decorating

    (P&D)

    was

    developed

    as

    part

    ofajointvocationallearningprogrammewhichallowsstudentswithawidevarietyofneedsto

    experiencespecificvocationalskillsinanappropriateprofessionalspacewithavocational

    tutor.

    MarkAmesfromtheConstructionandBuildingServicesofWestSuffolkCollegewas

    approachedtobecomethetutorandhasdevelopedarangeofactivitiesdeliveredtogroupsof

    upto10studentseachFridaymorningfor2hourseachweek.Theshortcourselasts6weeks

    andisrepeatedtoadifferentgroupofstudentseachhalfterm.

    ThestudentsparticipateinpracticalP&Dactivitiestodevelopanunderstandingofsomeofthe

    skillsneeded

    to

    work

    in

    this

    field.

    The

    experiences

    would

    lead

    to

    students

    evaluating

    the

    skills

    learnedandmakingconnectionstoeverydaylifeandwhethertheywouldbeappropriateskills

    tohelpthemintheirfutures.

    Projectactivitiesandapproaches

    10studentsfromtheSENPartnershiptakepartinasixweekcourse.Thiscoursehasbeen

    runningnowfornearly2years.

    Initiallythe

    P&D

    department

    at

    West

    Suffolk

    College

    hosted

    the

    Friday

    sessions

    but

    it

    has

    now

    movedtotheSkillsCentreatPriorySchoolandusestheP&Dworkshop.

    Eachweekapracticalactivitywasintroducedtothestudentsbythetutorandtheskillswere

    practisedbythestudents.Studentsweresupervisedbyschoolstaffduringtheactivitiesand

    encouragedtoparticipateasfullyaspossible.Activitieshaveincludedpaintingwallswith

    brushandroller,stencillingandwallpapering.Thestudentsalsotiledthesplashbackbehind

    thesinkarea.

    Projectoutcomes

    Eachstudentwasrequiredtocompleteanevaluationoftheirexperiencesandlearning.The

    learningformspartofthevocationalprogrammeofferedbyeachschool.Thelearningwas

    recordedandispartoftheaccreditationofferedbyeachschool(ASDANTransitionChallenge,

    ASDANTowardsIndependenceorCity&GuildsEmployabilityandPersonalDevelopment)at

    variouslevelsfromentrylevel1to3.

    Thestudentevaluationformisintendedforuseinportfoliosofworkrecordinglearning

    experiencesandcanbeuseinthestudentProgressFiledemonstratinglevelsofsuccessin

    practicalactivities.Seeappendixforexamplesheets.

    Theevaluationprocesshasrecentlybeendevelopedfurthertoincludeindividualtutorreports

    basedupontheEmployabilityforLifeSuffolkCharter.

    5. Nextstepstosustainability

    Theinitially

    funding

    came

    from

    the

    European

    Education

    funding

    as

    part

    of

    the

    HYPHOP

    Project.TheBurySENPartnershiphasbeenseekingfundstohelppayforthetutorcostsbut

    havebeenpayingtheirowntransportandstaffingcostsaswellashireoftheSkillsCentre

    workshop.

    ParticipationbyWestSuffolkCollegestudentsandstudentnumberstoincreaseto12to

    spreadthecostsbetween4partnersthusreducingtheamounteachpartnerhastopay.

    6. Conclusions/keymessages

    Studentenjoymentwashighonthelistofsuccesses.Fromtheevaluationsitwasevidentthat

    thestudentsmadeconnectionsaboutusingtheseskillsathome,usingappropriatePPEand

    thatthedevelopmentofsocialskills,mixingwithotherstudentsandadultsinawork

    environmentwasbeneficial.
