Review with PhilThe wide range of Korum Rod’s
cover everything I could possibly
want when I go fi shing, with rods
from powerful 3lb t/c Carp Rods
through to the super sensitive CS
Series 10ft Feeder and everything
in between.
My favourite of them all is the
Neoteric XS Twin Top. Why the
Neoteric XS Twin Top? Because it’s
possibly the most versatile rod I’ve
ever used! Whether I’m targeting
bream or roach on a lake, tackling
big barbel or chub on a river or even
fi shing for big carp, I’ll have my
Neoteric Twin Top’s with me!
The progressive action of the rods
and slim blank lend itself perfectly
to absorbing the lunges of powerful
fi sh near the net, preventing the hook
from pulling at that critical moment.
The cork and duplon handle, coupled
with the stylish, subtle graphics
make this rod look exceptional on
the bank.

SLEEPING
GIANTSLet’s talk about Sleeper Rods. The best thing about coarse fi shing in the UK is the wide variety of species that can be caught. Whilst you’re merrily fl oat fi shing in the margins, you could be missing out on a bonus fi sh from the middle of the lake. That was until bite alarms were invented, of course, where you can leave a rod out fi shing and simply wait until the alarm screams into life.
As a technique waiting for bigger species
like carp and pike, the ‘Sleeper Rod’
approach is the best way to make a good
day’s fi shing a great one. Not only can
you continue fi shing a more hands-on
method like quiver-tipping or the waggler,
you can have a heavy duty setup sat
waiting for a potential new personal best.
In the summer, I’d recommend something
like a Method feeder approach on your
Sleeper Rod, or maybe something like a
PVA bag using the Korum PVA System.
This will single out bigger tench and
bream, as well as carp, so is well worth
considering as a way of boosting your
day’s fi shing.
During the colder months the fi shing can
be extremely tricky. Part of the problem
is knowing which species are most
likely to feed, because only then can
you fi gure out which approach to take
to try and catch something. One surefi re
way to bag a few bonus bites in the
“I’d recommend a Method feeder
approach” ■ You can fish a quiver tip for smaller species whilst your ‘sleeper’ rod sits waiting for a big fish.

winter is to chuck a rod out for the pike
or the perch. If perching, a worm is as
good an approach as any, and with pike
the Korum Snapper range makes things
incredibly easy.
Whether you’re a novice predator angler
or an experienced hand, the Snapper
range is simple and robust enough to
suit everybody. The Dura-Bung fl oat
packs come with everything you need
to assemble a decent pike rig, and the
traces are tough enough to withstand the
attentions from even the biggest fi sh.
Something like the Korum Carp rods and
Korum KXi reel are strong enough for any
UK coarse fi sh and teamed with a KBI
bite alarm, you’ll have a setup that you
can cast out and leave ‘fi shing for itself’
wherever you choose to fi sh.
I tend to keep a bite alarm on a bankstick
for these occasions at all times, with
another bankstick featuring a butt rest.
It really is an essential item to consider
taking with you and will open your eyes
to a new way of fi shing.
So rule out the Sleeper Rod at your peril.
It could be the way you take your fi shing
to the next level.
If you want to attract big carp, bream and tench to your swim a great setup for your sleeper rod is of course a PVA bagging setup, where I’d recommend the Korum Leadclips used with a Quickchange Clip. This is just like what dedicated carp
anglers use, so it’s got obvious benefi ts.
The Lead Clip Kit comes with
everything you need, and again I’d use
a ready-tied Quickstops on Hair Rigs but
this time in 15 inches.
Simply hook on a PVA bag of something
like a mixture of pellets and you’re
fi shing! Great for day session fi shing
when you’re trying to sneak out a bonus
big fi sh.

Each lead has a unique, hard wearing brown paint finish with black fleck, helping to disguise the lead on the lake or river bed. Available in a range of sizes from 1.1oz to 4oz.
■ K GRIP SWIVELThe K-Grip Swivel leads have been specifically designed for river fishing, where the protruding bumps on the lead ensure that it stays in position on the river bed, regardless of flow. Each lead has a unique, hard wearing brown paint finish with black fleck, helping to disguise the lead on the river bed. Available in sizes from 2oz up to 8oz, there is a size for every situation.

River expert and barbel botherer Ade Kiddell reveals how staying mobile can catch you loads

River RiverEssentials
KORUM CONSUMER GUIDE 2012 www.facebook.com/korum.angling60
ESSENTIALSRIVER
Britain is draped with a network of superb waterways and some of the best day ticket fi shing you could ever dream of. But if you’re gearing up for a river session in 2012 then you might want to take a look at the tackle you’re using and consider a few updates to put you in the best position to catch more fi sh.
Now I’m a mobile angler myself and think
that keeping your tackle as lightweight
as possible is essential for success on
the river – especially on busier stretches
where many of the pegs nearest the car
park get taken before the sun comes up!
To keep yourself organising and effi cient,
you’ll need the right gear for the task,
and that’s where Korum tackle comes in.
It’s why I choose the Intelligent Tackle
Management (ITM) system. Whether
it’s the luggage I take with me or the
tackle box I work from, the ITM mode of
thinking keeps me fi shing at my best. It’s
why I choose the ITM Table Top Ruckbag.
The original Ruckbag found favour
with just about every mobile angler
going, because of the unique carrying
mechanism that allows you to carry a
chair via the Ruckbag. This is so simple
to do, and if you opt for the Lightweight
Accessory Chair, it’s the perfect fi t.
The great thing about the Ruckbag is it’s
designed to be used with everything else
in the ITM range, like the Rig Manager
tackle boxes, Rig Tracks and Tool Kits,
which for me are absolutely ideal for river
fi shing. The Rig Track allows me to tie
longer rigs than most rig boxes because
of the unique design, so it’s ideal for
stretches of the Severn and Trent where
a longer hooklink defi nitely works best.
■ A Korum Lightweight Accessory Chair suits river banks perfectly.
■ Big barbel like this are what you can expect with my simple river methods.
“It’s why I choose the ITM system”
www.korum.co.uk/Dealers 61
Much of my river fi shing is done using large Korum open ended feeders, which I use to target big barbel in rivers all over the UK. Whether I’m on the tidal Trent or my favourite stretches of
the Middle Severn, I’ve always found an open-end feeder crammed with pre-soaked pellets is a superb way to catch
more fi sh, or a Combi-Feeder fi lled with maggots.
My rig couldn’t be simpler. I use one of the new Korum
free-fl ow run rig kits to attach my feeder.
My hooklink is attached to the swivel, with the anti-tangle
boom used so I can cast out a 4ft - 6ft hooklink with the
utmost confi dence.

Know Your Kit...
I’d recommend taking a good selection
of the new Korum Xpert hooks for your
specimen fi shing.
Obviously, within my TT Ruckbag I’ll
be using the ITM Softboxes to carry a
selection of Korum feeders. I tend to
carry a few different sizes to suit the
river fl ow each day I’m out, and the
Softboxes are ideal for this. One way
to cut down the weight of this is to use
the new Combi-Feeders. The end caps
convert the feeder from a standard open-
ender, to a maggot feeder. You’ve no need
to carry both varieties around.
My favourite way of fi shing is called ‘The
Monkey’ and involves using a soaked
pellet mix that’s rammed tightly into an
Open End Feeder. Beyond this I fi sh a long
mono hooklink with a small Sonubaits
Pellet-O hookbait – it’s perfect for getting
bites from any swim.
Other river essentials include chair
accessories like the Groundbait Bowl and
Hoop, Side Tray, rod rests and the Double
Rod River Tripod. These will slide inside
the chair or in my Korum Quiver, which
is my preferred rod transport system. I
can keep a lightweight brolly in the main
compartment for rainier days, and take
two Neoteric XS rods and KXi Reels,
made up and ready to use. I tend to take
a fl oat rod and feeder rod with me to the
river, as different swims require different
tactics. For me, the 13ft Neoteric Power
Float is a great choice, along with a
Neoteric Twin Tip. This pretty much
covers most of my river fi shing needs.
All I need then is a Latex Barbel Spoon
net and an unhooking mat. I use the
Korum Mat Bag, as I can carry the net
and a weigh sling inside it, along with
a set of scales to keep track of my
captures, of course.
All in all, I’m carrying very little. I’ve got
my Ruckbag and Chair on my back, a Mat
Bag in one hand and a Quiver over my
shoulder. Perfect for roving around rivers
and being as organised as possible.
What more could you ask for?
■ A Maxi Rig Store enables you to keep long rigs pre-tied.
