Specially designed for first year international graduate students, this course providesan opportunity to practice communication skills for the American academic context.Students will discuss norms and expectations for graduate study in the United States,and consider the many ways students may navigate a successful graduate school career.Working with other students, they will have an opportunity to build relationships outsidetheir home departments. Students will practice skills for networking and makingconversation through synchronous and asynchronous activities. They will have anopportunity to learn about the sound structure of English through discussion of specificvocabulary items of particular importance to their professional interests. Throughout thecourse, instructor and peer feedback will provide an opportunity to assess strengths andchallenges while using spoken English, and strategies for continuing to improve theirown proficiency.
