1. Currently use AutoCAD for electric distribution.

2. Recently started to convert CAD data to GIS.

How to Import CAD

into GIS?

1. Decide what layer to import.2. Save .dwg with only this layer.3. Open ArcCatalog and navigate to .dwg.4. Change to appropriate coordinate system.5. Import into GIS.

1. Decide what layer to import.

You want each layer to be a separate layer within GIS.

Is it point, line, or polygon?

2. Save .dwg with only this layer.

After cleaning the .dwg, save it to only have

your working layer.

3. Open ArcCatalog and navigate to .dwg.

4. Change to appropriate coordinate system.

One way to do this is to right click the .dwg and navigate to properties. (Your .dwg may not be in the same coordinate system as your GIS.)

Choose the appropriate point, line, or polygon category. Then, drag it into your GIS.

Problem Overview

• Need to import CAD data to GIS

• Anchors were one layer to import, but they were individual line segments.

• Total 10,607 segments

• Goal was to merge these segments to form anchors as well as create a workbench for future instances.

Why Not Just Import

the Layer from CAD?

• I did, but it does not solve the problem.• Also, great way to use FME since we just acquired it.

drawn within AutoCAD.

Importing Process

• Create Bufferer, Dissolver, and Counter transformers.

• After counter, use SpatialFilter for pass/fail.

• Then, use the Aggregator transformer.

• Finally, export as a shapefile.

Transformers Purpose

• Counter – add numeric attribute to features

• SpatialFilter – filter the features with Pass/Fail (send counter features to the Filter port and send the original features to the Candidate port

• Aggregator – combine features from the Group By attribute

• Bufferer – expand

• Dissolver – dissolves area (creating larger areas from common boundaries)

• I merged the segments together.

• I have a workbench for similar tasks that I can adjust.
