Finding Slope or the y-intercept from the

Slope-Intercept Form

By the end of the period, I will find the slope or y-intercept from linear equations in slope-intercept form as well as write equations given two or more points.

I will demonstrate this by completing Four-Square Notes and by solving problems in a pair/group activity.

Notes: How To Get To Slope-Intercept Form

Slope-Intercept Form of a Linear Equation

m = slopeb = y-intercept

Step 1) Make a table

Use the two points to calculate SLOPE (m)

x y

X1 Y1

X2 Y2

Step 2) Plug m and one point into y = mx + bSolve for b

(Y1) = m(X1) + b

Step 3) Write general formula with m and b

m = Y2 – Y1

X2 – X1

Storm Check (Think, Write, Discuss, Report)

If you are given two points, how can you create a linear equation that is in slope-intercept form?

(2-3 sentences)

When given two points, I can create a linear

equation in slope-intercept form by _______________

______________________________________________

______________________________________________.

Problem AFind the slope or y-intercept given a point

Find the value of m or b if the given line passes through the given point.

(-6, -9)y = 2x + b3

Problem AFind the slope or y-intercept given a point

Find the value of m or b if the given line passes through the given point.

Substitute the coordinates of the given point into the equation and solve for b.

mx b+=y

SOLUTION

(-6, -9)y = 2x + b3

-9 = 2(-6) + b3 1

-9 = -4 + b

-5 = b

2(-6) = -12

-12/3 = -4

Problem BFind the slope or y-intercept given a point

Find the value of m or b if the given line passes through the given point.

(3, -2)y = mx + 1

Problem BFind the slope or y-intercept given a point

Find the value of m or b if the given line passes through the given point.

Substitute the coordinates of the given point into the equation and solve for m.

mx 1+=y

1+=2– ( )3m

=3– 3m

=1– m

SOLUTION

(3, -2)y = mx + 1

Write original equation.

Substitute 3 for x and -2 for y.

Subtract 1 from each side.

Divide each side by 3.

By the end of the period, I will find the slope or y-intercept from linear equations in slope-intercept form as well as write equations given two or more points.
