DOTS

A dot increases the note duration by one

half the value of the note.

DOTS

Since an eighth note is half the duration of a quarter

note, we will substitute it for the ½ symbol

As you can see, a dotted quarter note is equal to a

quarter note plus an eighth note.

DOTS (EXAMPLE)

A dot on a half note will equal a half note plus

half of THAT which is a quarter note.

DOTS

A dotted quarter note can also equal

three eighth notes

STEP BY STEP

To find the value of a dotted half note we must FIRST look at the note by itself

STEP BY STEP

A half note gets two beats so we then add half of THAT which is 1 beat

1 beat

This is half

of a half note

STEP BY STEP

Finally after adding the two we get 3

3 beats
