Welcome to Forest Hill Fashion Week AW14. I’m thrilled to be back at the helm as Festival Director of what is shaping up to the biggest festival of fashion we’ve put on to date. And we have an amazing line-up of events, parties, workshops, catwalk shows, music events and more across the four days.
Now in its 4th season, I founded Forest Hill Fashion Week in February 2013 to support the opening of the SEE3 Portas Pilot (www.see3.co.uk) pop up shop on
Dartmouth Road. We were overwhelmed by the level of local interest during that festival has since gone from strength to strength.
This season we’ve focussed on creating a festival that represents the Forest Hill folk we know and love. For the FHFW photo shoot strong creative identity via the designers we have showcased and the locations we used for the shoot. We are also tipping our rather stylish hat to the
local crafting community. You should note the plethora of creative workshops, as well as the Stag & Bow created Close Knit charity record attempt to create the most knitted items in one go.
I do hope you enjoy the festival as much as we’ve enjoyed working on it behind the scenes.

What are the three words that you’d used to capture the creative spirit of South East London? Eclectic, Vibrant, And welcoming. What trends have you the area lately? We love our community, we love making, and we’re bringing them together for a special charity event. Over 24 hours we will at-tempt to make a record-breaking 120 high-quality, hand-knitted gar-ments that will go on sale during FHFW and beyond. A selection of the garments will also feature in the catwalk show. All proceeds will go to One Girl (www.onegirl.org.au), a charity that supports girls’ empowerment and education in Sierra Leone.
WE NEED YOUWe’re looking for as many volunteers as possible to make this event happen. We will be arm knitting – reusing old textiles and yarns to make high-quality +$!$#(#knitting workshops in the run-up to the event so you can participate even if you have no previous knitting experience. it’s easy!We are asking for donations of old t-shirts and blankets that can be repurposed into yarn, along with any languishing chunky yarns that you can part with.

What’s your best piece of style advice? Never follow trends. Keep it simple. Wear what suits and makes you happy. Don’t be afraid of colour. There is no such animal as ‘keeping clothes for best’. What will you be doing during FHFW? Showcasing my new clothing collection with my unique upcycled bags at the catwalk show. I will also be involved in the marketplace during the catwalk show. I will be teaching a workshop for all ages on making an upcycled plaited necklace using fabric, plastic bags and old t-shirts at The Framing Salon.

How heavilyyou by the community you live in? People are the real reason I am a photographer. I am '),&)the different individuals I see and meet. I love to hear and sometimes imagine their stories +% %'history in this small section of our planet to be fascinating. Who’s your ‘one to watch’? I really like Katherine Harrison. Her ideas are simple but clever and always well crafted.
Which trends have you noticed in the area lately? +%)'%vibe. There’s a lot of cool people around with unique style. I miss the vintage pop-ups that were around for a while, I hope we see more of that. What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe & why? Probably my YSL Le Smoking tuxedo, bought in 2001. The cost of it made me feel a bit ill at the time, but I still wear it a lot, so it’s &$%+%$!#$'#)+% ‘investment dressing’.

Our team spent a fab day shooting imagery for this season’s FHFW brochure. Combining creative minds from South East London’s world of fashion design, make-up, styling and photography we decided our theme should be an exploration of the link between fashion and it’s local roots. And what better back-drops than our diverse high street?
% &%+%$#) jewellery and statement make-up with local surroundings and landmarks to capture slices of life with some fashion oomph. The bright, bold colours of dresses and skirts popped out against the backdrop of Aga’s Deli’s
mouthwatering shutters. Ordinary jeans were given a new lease of life and style when teamed with the tropical colours of shirts and accessories set against Run’s Street Art wall located by the Sylvan Post. A statement evening dress and headpiece transformed a backstreet into a catwalk.
This is just a taster of the talent on show over our four day event, get ready to feast your eyes on lots more.
