It is a word or group of words used to give particular emphasis to an idea or sentiment.

Types of Figures of Speech

• Allusion • Apostrophe• Hyperbole• Metaphor

• Synecdoche• Personification• Simile• Onomatopoeia

• Metonymy

Allusion- an indirect reference to somebody or something.

EXAMPLE:

"I violated the Noah rule: predicting rain doesn't count; building arks does."

APOSTROPHE

to address a person who usually is either absent or deceased, an inanimate object, or an abstract idea.

EXAMPLE

“Hail divinest Melancholy, whose saintly visage is too bright to hit the sense of human sight.”

HYPERBOLE

form of inordinate exaggeration.

EXAMPLE:

Her baby cried a river.

Metaphor use of a word or phrase denoting one kind of idea or object in place of another word or phrase for the purpose of suggesting a likeness between the two.

EXAMPLE:

A light to his feet and a lamp to his path.

metonymy

use of a word or phrase for another to which it bears an important relation.

EXAMPLE:

“He was an avid reader of Chaucer.”

Synecdoche

the part is made to stand for the whole, the whole for a part, the species for the genus, and vice versa.

EXAMPLE:

“The president's administration contained the best brains in the country.”

Personification

representation of inanimate objects or abstract ideas as living beings.

EXAMPLE:

Simile specific comparison by means of the words “like” or “as” between two kinds of ideas or objects.

EXAMPLE:

Asstrong

as an

animal.

Onomatopoeia

imitation of natural sounds by words.

EXAMPLE:Cackling hen.

Whizzing wind.
