A Quick Tour of TimeLine Collaboration with T4 & Friends

• For those interested in learning more about the idea of TimeLine Collaboration with T4 & Friends, this slide show can get you off to a fast start.

• The subject matter for the charts is based on OpenVMS performance. Even if you don’t know anything about OpenVMS or system performance, most of the ideas included here about looking at trend charts and assessing their meaning are universal and can be helpful not matter what the source of your trend data.

• For example, see figures 8 and 9 and the timeless value of capturing trend data and creating historical reservoirs for future use. Other universal ideas include the power of before and after, Tufte’s small multiples, square waves, selective use of scatter plots to augment time series analysis, creating new metrics through normalization, moving averages.

• We don’t talk about it, but you will notice that all the charts in this set include only one or two factors are are relatively straightforward to understand even by non-experts. When you have collected the most important trend factors, we have found that looking at them one at a time is almost always the best way to begin.
