A Review of the Russian N,N-dimethylformamide and N,N-dimethylacetamide MarketN,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) are the substituted amides of formic and acetic acids respectively. Due to their ability to act as polar aprotic solvents, the substances find uses in the production of polyacrylonitrile fibres, paints and coatings, and also in organic synthesis. In Russia, there is one operating producer of technical grade DMF. At present, the country cannot boast the commer-cial production of DMA, and the demand for it is primarily covered by imports. Our article offers a review of the current state of the Russian DMF and DMA market.

General info on alkyl acetates

32 Eurasian chemical market №2(26) February 2009

Organics www.chemmarket. info

The Russian and Ukrainian Alkyl Acetate MarketsAlkyl acetates are acetic esters with a general formula of СН3СООR, where R is an alkyl radical (for instance, methyl CН3, ethyl С2Н5, etc). Lower alkyl acetates are volatile liquids, as a rule, with a pleasant odour. These esters have a few common features; in particular, they are highly prone to hydrolysis resulting in the initial acid and alcohol. Their solubility in water decreases as their molecular weight rises.Alkyl acetates have numerous application spheres, yet their basic use is as solvents in the production of cellulose nitrate, paints and coatings, perfumery and cosmetics. They are also used in the food industry as flavouring and preservative agents. The most important products, in terms of commercial manufacturing, are ethyl acetate and n-butyl acetate, and to a less degree, methyl acetate, propyl, isopropyl and amyl acetates (pentyl acetates). In this article we shall consider business environments in the Russian and Ukrainian ester markets.

Carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose glycolic acid, an ether of cellulose and glycolic acid [С6Н7О2(ОН)3-

x(ОСН2СООН)x]n, where х = 0.08-1.5, is a colourless amorphous polymer based substance. n – polymeri-sation degree – varies within 300-2500.However, carboxymethylcellulose is nothing but an intermediate; pure carboxymethylcellulose is of little significance to final consumers. It is its sodium salt, frequently referred to as CMC in scientific circles, that is commercially important. Our review offers the reader an in-depth coverage of the CIS CMC production, including its idiosyncrasies, challenges and prospects.
