The second annual Transportation Asset and Infrastructure Management (TAIM) Conference isscheduled for October 19 - 20, 2020, at the Wyndham Garden State College in Boalsburg,Pennsylvania. Designed for federal, state, and local transportation agency representatives,contractors and material suppliers, engineering consulting firm professionals, faculty, andstudents, TAIM will feature a variety of topics. >>

YEAR-1 FINAL REPORTS

George Mason University helpsnext generation consider the futureof the nation's infrastructuresystems Elise Miller-Hooks, professor and Bill & EleanorHazel Chair in Infrastructure Engineering at GeorgeMason University (GMU), and a team of sevengraduate students executed "Imagine the Future:Exercises on Conceptualizing Infrastructure Systemsfor an Interconnected World" to educate and teachthe next generation how to critically consider thefuture of our nation's infrastructure systems. A follow-up to a symposium of the same name thatwas held in Oct. 2017, the project was based on thetheory that infrastructure systems such as roadways,

clean and wastewater pipelines, power networks, and natural gas networks are no longerdetached systems. By conducting exercises with more than 100 students and young professionals at the ASCERegion 2 Assembly held on the GMU Fairfax campus on Nov. 17, 2018, Miller-Hooks' projectallowed graduate students to design and run the event, providing opportunities for real-worldexperience in education and leadership. Lehigh University conductsundergraduate research experience program Lehigh University, through its Institute for CyberPhysical Infrastructure and Energy (I-CPIE) and Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems(ATLSS) Engineering Research Center , inconjunction with the Pennsylvania InfrastructureTechnology Alliance (PITA) program, conducted a10-week "CIAMTIS Lehigh Research Experience forUndergraduates (REU) program."

The program, which ran from May 29, 2019 through August 2, 2019, featured LehighUniversity students who participated in a program that exposed the students to a well-roundedprofessional development experience. The REU program featured research from four projects including:

Life Extension of Fatigued-Damaged Highway, Rail, and Transit BridgesFatigue Life Estimation of Bridges with Smart Mobile SensingEfficient Service Life Extension of Bridges through Risk-Based Life-Cycle Managementand High-Performance Construction Materials: Emphasis on Corrosion-Resistant SteelRoad Pavement Condition Monitoring by Embedded Crowdsensing

The program's activities included professional skills development workshops and seminars,onsite outreach activities, and offsite tours. In addition, students were assigned to an activeCIAMTIS research project at ATLSS under the direction of the project Principal Investigatorand graduate student mentor to help them navigate through the research project experience.The program culminated with a final report , presentation, and poster on their researchfindings.

ABOUT THE CENTER The Center for Integrated Asset Management for Multimodal Transportation InfrastructureSystems (CIAMTIS) is the USDOT Region 3 (Mid-Atlantic) University Transportation Center(UTC) housed at the Larson Transportation Institute (LTI), on the University Park campus ofPenn State. CIAMTIS focuses on improving the durability and extending the life oftransportation infrastructure. The center has seven partners, representing five states in theMid-Atlantic United States. Recognized as leaders at state, regional, national, and internationallevels, Penn State and its partners maximize contributions to solve current and futuretransportation infrastructure issues.
