fantastic items from our collections, including stereographic views of campus
from the early 1900s and rare books dating from 1562 to 1975. The department’s
current exhibit, Behind the Paintbrushes and Pens: Illustrators and Authors
of Early 20th Century Travelogues, examines the dynamic lives of some of
the painters and writers of travelogues published between 1900 and 1915,
revealing a group of people just as interesting and delightful as the places they
visited.

5:00—7:15 p.m. Friday Night Film Series: Under the Sun (2015), and panel discussion Golden Auditorium, Little Hall After years of negotiation, the Russian director, Vitaly Mansky was invited by
the North Korean government to make a film about one girl and her family
in the year she prepares to join the Children’s Union, on the “Day of the Shining
Star,” Kim Jong-Il’s birthday. And so it might seem joyous, as Mansky films her
in patriotic school pageants and in dance class, or with her parents, eating
delicious food in their picturesque apartment. But the government handlers
supervising the production did not realize that Mansky kept filming even
after they had shouted, “Cut.” The result is a film that reveals both the
country’s façade and that which lies behind it. The screening will be followed
by a faculty panel. Cosponsored by the Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian
Studies programs.

6:15 p.m. Extreme Weather Ho Tung Visualization Lab, 401 Ho Science Center Extreme Weather takes us to the front lines where few have gone. Follow
researchers and everyday heroes as they boat up to the melting tidewater
glaciers in Alaska, embed sensors in tornadoes in the Great Plains, and battle
out-of-control wildfires caused by drought in California. Through the lens of
their experiences, audiences discover surprising connections that help us
understand and adapt to our ever-changing weather.

1:00 p.m. Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science! Ho Tung Visualization Lab, 401 Ho Science Center (For younger audiences) Meet Apollo Aurora, host of the Planetarium
Channel’s universally loved gravity news source in Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science! With special robot correspondents, Apollo and her team will explore
rocket power, gravity on other planets, monstrous black holes, and even what
keeps us grounded on Earth! Watch this brand-new planetarium show and
uncover the mysteries of gravity.

Hispanic families as the event will be fully in Spanish and will feature

6:00—8:00 p.m. BSU Family Weekend Banquet Parker Commons Hosted annually by The Black Student Union, the Family Weekend Banquet
welcomes all families and students of Colgate University as well as the
members of the Hamilton community. Professors and/or core members will
deliver keynote speeches, and a catered dinner will follow.
7:30—9:00 p.m. General David Petraeus: Hosted by the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization
Colgate Memorial Chapel General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, retired) will visit campus to speak with
students and the local community. Tickets are not required for this event;
seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. General Petraeus’s
address will touch on the situation in the Middle East regarding Iran, Iraq, and
Afghanistan; the future of NATO; the ongoing nuclear standoff with North
Korea; and a host of other issues related to the future of U.S. diplomacy with
China and Russia. Professor Robert Kraynak, political science professor and
director of Colgate’s Center for Freedom and Western Civilization, will be the
host and moderator.
8:00—10:00 p.m. Colgate Stand Up 2nd Annual Roast Battle Donovan’s Pub Colgate Stand Up’s “Roast Battles” occur once a semester and involve all
members of the club. Student comedians volunteer to participate in a
performative battle of wits in which each person delivers clever insults against
his/her opponent while the audience watches, all in an attempt to be crowned
that semester’s “Roast Champion.” All are welcome to attend, laugh, cheer,
and enjoy Donovan’s Pub food. (Some free food will be offered by the club for
those without meal plans.)
