(Iowa D.O.T.) The billknown as "Kadyn's Law," inmemory of Kadyn Halver-son, went into effect with the
governor's signature March16, 2012. The 7-year-oldfirst grader from Kensett waskilled last May by a driverwho had illegally passed astopped school bus.
The new provisions in-crease the penalties for driv-ers who fail to abide by thelaw (Iowa Code 321.372) onstopped school buses. Previ-ously, a motorist who passeda bus when the red warninglights were flashing was fined$200. The new Iowa law in-creased the penalty to at least$250 and as high as $675 fora first offense and up to 30days in jail. For subsequentviolations, a driver could facefines of up to $1,875. A driv-

er who violates the law andcauses an injury could faceadded fines, jail time and li-cense suspension.
In addition to the situa-tions described below, driversshould never pass on the right.Violations of Iowa's motor ve-hicle laws should be reportedto local law enforcement.
Scenario 1 You are travel-ing on a two-lane or three-lane
Nearing the bus from therear; drivers must always stopwhen either the amber lightsor red lights are flashing.Stop no closer than 15 feetfrom the bus.
Meeting the bus from thefront; drivers must slow theirvehicles to 20 mph when am-ber lights are flashing. Stopwhen the lights change to
red and the stop arm comesout. Remain stopped until thelights stop flashing and thestop arm is withdrawn.
Scenario 2 You are trav-eling on a road with two ormore lanes in each direc-tion
Stop if nearing the busfrom the rear when amber orred lights are flashing. Stopno closer than 15 feet fromthe bus.
When meeting the bus inone of the opposite two lanes(or more), you do not needto stop even if the bus hasstopped with lights flashingand stop arm out. The bus isnot permitted to load or un-load children who must crossthis type of roadway unlessthere are official traffic con-trol devices present.

(NAPSI)Sooner orlater, all car batteries haveto be replaced. The goodnews is that by taking a fewsimple maintenance steps, you can avoid the cost andhassle of getting strandedwith a dead battery.
Extreme Heat and Cold
Excessive heat and over-charging are the two mainreasons for shortened bat-tery life. Heat causes bat-tery fluid to evaporate, thusdamaging the internal struc-ture of the battery.
A malfunctioning com-ponent in the charging sys-tem, usually the voltage reg-ulator, can allow too high ofa charging rate, leading toslow death for a batte ry.
Colder temperatures canalso be a problem, increas-ing the thickness of the en-gine oil, making the engine
A Battery Check Today CanKeep The Tow Truck Away
harder to turn over and thebattery work harder. Thismakes for harder starting.
Battery TipsTo help you get the most
life out of a battery, the CarCare Council suggests thefollowing:
Have your battery test-
edand replaced if neces-saryin the fall and spring. This reduces the chance adead battery will leave yous t r andedon theside ofthe road.
Besure theelectricalsystem ischargingat the cor-rect rate;o v e r -charging
can damage a battery asquickly as undercharging.
If your battery is thetype that needs to be toppedoff, check it regularly, espe-cially in hot weather. Add
distilled water when neces-sary. Always replace a bat-
tery with one thats ratedat least as high as the oneoriginally specified.
Keep the top of the bat-tery clean. Dirt becomesa conductor, which drainsbattery power. Further, ascorrosion accumulates onbattery terminals, it be-comes an insulator, inhibit-ing current flow.
The Car CareCouncil is a national non-profit organization provid-ing information for the BeCar Care Aware consumer
education campaign thatpromotes the benefits ofregular vehicle care, main-tenance and repair.

(NAPSI)Safety on theroad is no accident. For ex-ample, when a warning lightilluminates on a cars dash-board, it is alerting you to asituation that requires yourattention.
While not all warninglights are a sign that disaster
is imminent, no warning indi-cator should ever be ignored.Thats the word from the
experts at AAA, who encour-age motorists to read theirowners manual and know
Warning Lights Send Messages You Cant Ignorewhat each of the warninglights in their vehicle means.
To help, they offer the fol-lowing tips:
Oil Pressure LightThe oil pressure light is
usually an oilcan symbol orthe word OIL. It comes on
when there is a drop in en-gine oil pressure. Of all thewarning lights, the oil pres-sure light indicates the great-est potential for serious me-chanical damage.
If the oil pressure warninglight comes on and stays on,pull off the road at the earli-est safe opportunity, shut offthe engine and call for assis-tance.
Engine Temperature LightThe engine temperature
light is usually a thermometersymbol or the word TEMP.It comes on when the enginetemperature is unsafe foryour vehicle. Unless the en-gine temperature is quickly
brought under control, majordamage may occur.
If there are any signs of acooling system leak, pull offthe road at the earliest safeopportunity, shut off the en-gine and call for assistance.
Be careful when openingthe hood in the presence of
steam, and never remove theradiator cap when the engineis hot.
Charging System LightThe charging system light
is usually a battery symbol orthe word ALT or GEN. Itcomes on when the vehicleelectrical system is no longer
being supplied power by thealternator.
If this light comes on, shutdown all unnecessary electri-cal loads such as the radio, heater or air-conditioning,then drive the vehicle to a re-pair facility immediately forfurther inspection.
Check Engine LightThe check engine light
comes on when there is aproblem affecting the vehi-cles exhaust emissions.
If the light comes on andstays on, make an appoint-ment with an auto repair shop
to have the problem checkedin the near future.
However, if the checkengine light begins flashingrepeatedly, the catalytic con-verter is over-heating. Shouldthis occur, drive the vehicleto a repair shop immediatelyfor further diagnosis.
Disregarding a flashingcheck engine light could starta fire, destroy the catalyticconverter and result in neces-sary repairs that could easilyexceed $1,000.

(NAPSI)-Keeping yourcar on the road to safetyand savings can start withsomething as simple as well-maintained tires.
According to the RubberManufacturers Association, about 11 percent of vehicleson the road have at least onebald tire, and 55 percent ofvehicles have at least one
underinflated tire.Ongoing preventivemaintenance--which can takeless than 10 minutes--at leastevery month or before longtrips is the best method tomaximize tire performance, say the experts at CooperTire. Before hitting the road, drivers should conduct do-it-yourself maintenancechecks, examining tires forproper inflation, damage orexcessive wear and tear.
T r e a d i n gfirmly. Theonly piece of avehicle to touchthe road is thetires, makingtire tread--
a key factorin handling,c o r n e r i n g ,accelerating andbraking--a vitalpart of overalltire maintenance.Tire tread depthshould be morethan 2/32 of aninch deep allaround the tire,and drivers cancheck this byusing a penny.
Insert theedge of the coininto the tread
with Lincoln going in headfirst. If the top of Lincolnshead is covered by tread, theres an acceptable amountof tread; if the top of his headis visible at any location onthe tire, the tire is worn outand should be replaced.
Wearing well. Whileexamining the tread, alsolook for signs of uneven
wear or damage such as cuts, cracks, splits, punctures andbulges. These conditionsshorten the life of tires and, ifnot corrected, may do furtherdamage to the tire, or air lossmay occur.
Putting the pressureon. Tire pressure alsoplays a critical role in theoverall performance of tiresas underinflation createsexcessive stress on the tire, while overinflation can cause
uneven wear in addition tohandling and braking issues.A common myth is thatthe tire pressure listed onthe sidewall is the optimalpressure, while in reality it isthe maximum pressure.
Drivers should followthe guidelines found in thevehicle owners manualor tire placard (or sticker)
attached to the vehicle dooredge, doorpost, glove boxdoor, trunk or fuel door.
Professional help.Should any of these checksreveal the need for requiredmaintenance--or when indoubt about the conditionof their tires--drivers shouldtake vehicles to a tire dealerfor a professional inspection, suggests Chuck Yurkovich, vice president of globaltechnology for Cooper Tire.

(NAPSI)As gas pricescontinue to fluctuate, its al-ways a good time to evaluateyour driving habits and takesteps to keep yourself andyour car on the road to sav-ings at the pump.
To demonstrate the 10 com-mon mistakes that driversmake to affect fuel economy,General Motors conducted
a driving test. Two of theirfuel economy engineers, AnnWenzlick and Beth Nunning, drove identical ChevroletCruze LTs on a typical work-day commute. They eachdrove 20 minutes with cityand highway driving, includ-ing a stop for coffee.
Wenzlick averaged 37 milesper gallon using efficient driv-ing habits and by maintainingher car and Nunning averaged21 miles per gallon. On aver-age, that was a $100 price dif-ference at the pump. Here aresome of their tips based onwhat they learned:
Get out of the drive-through lane. Idling for 15minutes burns through abouta quarter of a gallon of gas.Parking your car and goinginto the store to get what youwant can actually help to savemoney on gas.
Take it easy. Jumping onthe gas at every light, onlyto hit the brakes, isnt goingto get you home any faster. However, driving smoothlycan improve your mileage by20 percent.
Drive 70, not 80. It maynot sound like much, but itslikely a 10-mph differencecan save you up to four miles
per gallon when driving onthe highway. Use cruise control. It turns
out that maintaining a con-stant speed over time is muchmore efficient than speedingup and slowing down overand over again.
Roll up the windows. At
Driving Smart Can Mean Significant Savings At The Gas Pumpslower speeds, turning offthe air-conditioning can saveyou a little, but on the high-way, its better to roll up thewindows. If the windows aredown, the increased air pres-sure can slow the car and con-sume more energy than air-conditioning will.
Get rid of that extra stuffin the trunk of your car. Ev-
ery 100 pounds of weight youcarry in the car can reducefuel economy by 2 percent.
Dont ignore the checkengine light. Serious engineproblems can cut your fueleconomy by up to 40 percent.
Try to bundle your er-rands. Plan ahead. An engineat operating temperature canbe up to 50 percent more ef-ficient than a cold engine. So,when possible, its much bet-ter to run five errands in anafternoon than running oneerrand every day of the week.
Make your tires last. Prop-erly inflated tires will im-prove your fuel economy andthey will last longer. Also, rotate tires at manufacturer-recommended intervals.
Use the grade of motor oilrecommended for your ve-hicle; the same goes for theoctane level of gasoline. Mo-tor oil that says Energy Con-serving on the performancesymbol of the American Pe-troleum Institute containsfriction-reducing additivesthat can improve fuel econo-my.
For most cars, the recom-mended gasoline is regularoctane. In most cases, usinga higher-than-recommended-
octane gas offers no benefit-and costs more. Ditch the roof ornaments.
At highway speeds, up to athird of your fuel is used toovercome wind resistance,so even small changes toyour vehicles aerodynamicscan have a big impact in fuel
economy. It pays to be prudent. Ac-
cording to Roger Clark, man-ager of the GM Energy Cen-ter, With a well-maintainedcar, the best drivers get up
to 25 percent more miles pergallon than average. Whenyou combine a poorly main-tained car with inefficientdriving habits, the fuel econo-my of the worst drivers can be
50 percent below average.Clark added, The fuel
economy of every vehicle isgreatly affected by how youdrive and how you care foryour vehicle. Often, rela-
tively small changes to yourdriving habits and vehiclemaintenance can make thedifference between being onthe bottom or the top of thefuel-economy scale.

Bob Larsons first car was a 1957 Chevy that he boughtfor $300.Problem was, he only had $225. But the fellow he
bought it from said he could go ahead and take it, that he
knew Bob would pay him the remaining $75.Beaming when he got the car home, Bob was ready to
drive his new car. But his father said he could drive the newcar.once he paid the remaining $75.
It didnt take me long to save that money. And boy wasthat car polished in the mean time. It was a good lesson myfather taught me, Bob said.
Bob later sold that 1957 Chevy so he could buy a 1968Chevelle.
The past year, Bob and his wife, Lonnie, decided to startlooking for another 1957 Chevy to coincide with their40th wedding anniversary and the 40th anniversary of Bobreturning from Vietnam.
We found quite a few 1957 Chevys and inquired about afew. By accident, we saw a 1957 red Pontiac and both likedthe look of it, Lonnie said.
You never see 1957 Pontiacs. They are kind of unique,Bob said.
The 1957 Pontiac Catalina Star Chief Coupe two-doorhard top was in Scottsdale, AZ. It didnt work out for theLarsons to fly out and see it, but they remembered that Ronand Pam Sande were in Arizona at the time.
We asked if they would go check it out and they did. Rontook it for a test drive and then called to tell us about it,Lonnie said.
The Larsons sought out the advice of fellow car collectorand neighbor, Garold Schultz, who told them to get thePontiac because you just dont see them.
So in February, the Larsons were able to have their newvehicle shipped to Humboldt, where it was unloaded at theHy-Vee parking lot.
Red and white with lots of chrome, the Star Chief wasrestored in the 1980s. It belonged to a family in Texas formany years and remained in the southern states until now and

has just 122,000 miles on it.It is estimated that only 120 cars were ordered l ike this one,
so they are ultra rare. With a 347 V8 tri-power, it is one of theearly muscle cars.
Its a powerful car with a nice sound to it, Bob said.Theyve taken the 1957 Pontiac to a few events, such as the
Backseat Diner car cruises, JaMar in Fort Dodge and a carshow at Eagle Grove. Shortly after they bought the car, theyhad a request for it to be used in a wedding. Bob drove thebride and groom from the church in Badger to the receptionat Rustix in Humboldt.
The Larsons have other vehicles. In the 1970s, they boughta 1923 Model T that was all original and still ran. Bob tore itapart and continues to work on it as time allows.
They have a 1978 Thunderbird that theyve kept throughthe years.
They bought a 1954 Oldsmobile four door sedan fromGarold Schultz and plan on doing a little work on it.
Bob grew up in Badger and Lonnie grew up on a farm in theBadger area and attended country school in Beaver Township. They met at church in Badger and got engaged in 1969, justbefore Bob left to serve in Vietnam. They were married onNov. 6, 1971, and shortly thereafter bought a house six mileswest of Humboldt where they lived for 22 years.
They bought their current farm place in 1990 and startedbuilding a new house. Most of the buildings have beenreplaced on the farm that overlooks the Des Moines River.
We both grew up in this area and actually both ice skatedon the oxbow down below here. We never dreamt wed belucky enough to buy this place some day, Lonnie said.
Over the years, Bob worked at the New Idea plant in FortDodge, and later was plant manager of Quality Plus Products,a pharmaceutical company. He then worked for 24 years asa supervisor/foreman for The Chantland Company beforeretiring to the farm. Today, Bob enjoys farming and workingwith livestock.
Lonnie worked on the farm growing up and during hersenior year of high school they offered an office educationcoop program and she started working in the afternoons forDodgen Industries, filing and typing invoices. She grew withthe company and after 38 years parted with the company asexecutive vice-president.
She intended to start enjoying life on the farm, butwas approached by the Humboldt County DevelopmentAssociation about becoming their first economic developmentdirector, which she did for four years.
It was time to go back to my original plan of life on thefarm. I wanted to spend time with my growing family. Mygrandkids were growing up and they werent waiting for me,Lonnie said.
The Larsons have three daughters (Jen, Julie and Jeana)and five grandchildren.
The Larsons raise horses, smooth riding Missouri FoxTrotters to be exact. They also have a small cow-calf herd, have some chickens, ducks, ponies, a goat and more.
It is their love of the farm that led the Larsons to startPumpkins and Ponies seven years ago. This year, it will beheld on their farm on Lone Tree Road (six miles south ofHumboldt) on Saturday, Oct. 13.
There will be horse rides, horse drawn wagon rides to the
pumpkin patch, musical entertainment, food and much more. Its really turned into a neighborhood event, too. Its achance for kids to see life on a farm, Lonnie said.
And if you look real hard, you might get a sneak peak atone of their classic cars.
