2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Men’s & Women’s Highlights
The 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar features US$6.21 million in prize money, a new star-
rating system with four Five-Star events, three of which are Major Series, three Four-Star events, six Three-
Star events, four Two-Star events, and seven One-Star events, along with the Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball
World Tour Finals. There will be only one age-group FIVB World Championships held in 2017, for players
under the age of 21. The showcase event in 2017 will be the Beach Volleyball World Championships in
Vienna, Austria in late July and early August. The 2017 schedule begins in February and concludes in October.
This year marks the 31st anniversary of the first FIVB beach volleyball event held February 17-22, 1987 in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. The gold medal was won by USA’s Sinjin Smith/Randy Stoklos. The men’s World Tour
began in 1989, the women’s in 1992. Smith/Stoklos were the champions of the inaugural season in 1989-90.
· The international beach volleyball circuit visits 24 sites in 20 countries over a nine-month period spanning
from February to October. The last two events, in October, will be part of the 2018 World Tour.
· The 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball schedule features 19 men’s and 24 women’s events within the all five
confederations (African, Asian, European, North American, and South American), offering US$6.21 million
in prize money.
· The total purse for the World Championships will be $US 1 Million, while the four Five-Star events will pay
out $600,000 each, the Four-Star events will award $300,000 each and the purse will be $800,000 for the
Swatch FIVB World Tour Season Final.
· The World Championships, all four Five-Star events, all three Four-Star events, and the Swatch FIVB
World Tour Season Final will be combined events for women and men. Four of the six Three-Star events,
none of the four Two-Star events, and four of the seven One-Star events will also include both genders.
· The two showcase events on the 2017 FIVB World Tour Calendar will be the FIVB World Championships,
played in Vienna, Austria from July 28-August 6 and the Swatch FIVB World Tour Season Final, played in
Hamburg, Germany from August 23-27.
· The five Five-Star events will include the FIVB Major Series events, two of which will return to their 2016
sites in Croatia (Porec) and Switzerland (Gstaad). The new venue for 2017 was in the United States (Fort
Lauderdale). The other Five-Star event will be held in Italy (Rome).
· The Four-Star events in 2017 will be in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Switzerland (Lucerne), and Poland
(Olsztyn).
· The Three-Star events will have a purse of $100,000 for each single-gender event and 75,000 per gender
for the combined events. The 2017 events for both genders will be played in China (Xiamen and Qinzhou),
Russia (Moscow), and Netherlands (The Hague), while the event in Iran (Kish Island) was for men only,
and the event in Thailand (Phuket) will be for women only.
· The Two-Star events will have a purse of $50,000 each with all four being held for one gender only. The
men’s event will be held in Spain (Espinho), while the three events for women will be in Australia (Sydney),
and China (Nanjing and Nantong).
· The One-Star events will offer a purse of $10,000 per gender, with the events in Australia (Shepparton),
Malaysia (Selangor), Fiji (Pacific Harbour), and Morocco (Agadir) competing for both genders, while the
events in Monaco (Monaco) and Korea (Daegu and Ulsan) will be for women only.
· The United States opened the FIVB World Tour calendar for the second time in the 31 year history of the
tour with the FIVB Fort Lauderdale Major in Florida from February 7-12. The state of Florida also opened
the 1994 FIVB World Tour season in Miami. The first 2017 Four-Star event will be held in Brazil (Rio de
Janeiro) from May 18-21, the first Three-Star event will be played in Iran (Kish Island) from February 15-18,
the first Two-Star event will be in Australia (Sydney) from March 17-19, and the first One-Star event was
held in Australia (Shepparton) on March 4th and 5th.
· The 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar also includes the FIVB Age Group World Championships for
players under the age of 21 in China (Nanjing) from July 11-16. FIVB age-group worlds for U21 and U19
have been held for over a decade, once for U17 and two times for U23.
· Red Bull Media House has the exclusive distribution media rights for the 2017 FIVB World Tour.
· For the eighth straight year, the tour is exclusively using the Mikasa VLS300 ball.
