With glacial retreat, 18,000 years ago, rushing melt water generated many streams along the Portage Escarpment. Euclid Creek formed between the pre-glacial Cuyahoga and Chagrin valleys.

North of the Euclid Moraine, in Euclid, a half-dozen escarpment runs formed with flows directly to Lake Erie. Burk Run is the largest of these streams. Hillandale lies on an important Burk Run headwater.

During its northward retreat, the last ice front stalled twice at the north edge of the Portage Escarpment. With each stall, a ridge of fine debris (moraine) accumulated along the front.

1. About 16,000 years ago, ice retreat stalled atop the escarpment edge. The Euclid Moraine was laid down. Locally, the Euclid forced melt water westward, thereby forming Euclid Creek east branch.
2. About 14,000 years ago, ice retreat stalled at the escarpment base. The Painesville Moraine was laid down.
At Hillandale, small head-waters gathered to flow northward to Lake Erie.
Burk Run was thus formed.
In Wickliffe, the Painesville forced melt water eastward to the Chagrin Valley. Pete’s Pond and Gully Brook were thus formed.

The Euclid Moraine lay above the highest reach of ancestral Lake Erie. For a brief period, the Painesville Moraine formed an ancestral Lake Erie shoreline.
The Painesville’s northern area was therefore cut flat by wave action. Waves never touched the southern area. Here, stream action has cut deep ravines.

As the ‘Wickliffe Ridge’, the Painesville Moraine has wave cut and stream cut bands.

Isaac Brush house, built on the the Painesville Moraine in 1847. Charles F. Brush was born here in 1849.
Early HistoryIn 1798, Joseph Burk opened an inn where Euclid Ave crossed Burk Run. Hospitality remains significant in local commerce.
In 1847, the Isaac E. Brush family arrived from Upstate New York. They built a substantial Greek Revival house near the head of current Magnolia Dr.

EstatesDuring the late 1890s, summer estates arose on the Painesville Moraine (Wickliffe Ridge). In 1898, J.R. Outhwaite built Hillandale in Euclid. J.E. French built Nutwood in Wickliffe.
In 1910, Nela Park developer, Burton Tremaine, bought Hillandale. He quickly built the log house and, later, the Hillandale bridge.

On the East Side, the Euclid Bluestone Terrace is a broad expanse of hard sandstone. The cap rock resisted Ice Age glacial buldozing.
In current terms, the bluestone cap rock forms a large terrace stretching from Cleveland Heights eastward to the Chagrin River.

Below their bluestone knick points, the escarpment runs cut mostly through soft moraine deposits.
The resulting ravines are short but deep and voluminious. They have special ecologies.
Four large escarpment ravines are available for conservation within the City of Euclid.

In 2015, Bluestone Heights will undertake an ecological inventory within each of the four ravines. The results will help determine the ecological value (natural capital) present within the City of Euclid.
Burk Run at Hillandale is one of the four ravines.
