Expanding Brackets6.1Expansion is the product of multiplying an algebraic expression by a term or another algebraic expression.
a) 3x ( 3x – 4y)
= 9x2 - 12xy
Expanding the brackets means that each term inside the brackets is multiplied by
the term outside.
Example 1:Find the product of the following.

b) (x – y) (3x + 5y)
= 3x2 + 5xy- 3xy - 5y2
Like terms can be simplified= 3x2 + 2xy – 5y2
Expanding the brackets means that each term inside the
brackets is multiplied by the term outside.
Example 2:Find the product of the following.

The expansion of a linear algebraic expression with a linear term can be obtained by multiplying each term of the algebraic expression with the linear term outside. (single bracket)
