THE MISSION OF IHE IS TO
C R E AT E a more just, humane and sustainable world
T H R O U G H E D U C A T I O N
On Sept. 21, 2013, I stood in front of a room packed with 450 people at our Educating for a Just, Peaceful & Sustainable Future conference in New York City, and I expressed something I’d never said before: humane education has reached a tipping point. Perhaps it was because our conference, created through a collaboration with Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots and HEART, drew a sold-out crowd. Perhaps it was because our hundreds of M.Ed. and M.A. graduates, our thousands of online course participants, our tens of thousands of resource downloads, and the likely millions of youth reached through all these means are proving the power of education to create solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. Perhaps it was because I knew we had such exciting projects in the works.
In addition to our successful conference, 2013 delivered many moments when I glimpsed a profound shift toward wider adoption of humane education in classrooms, communities and homes around the world. I saw it when I gave a keynote speech to an amazing group of international educators at the EARCOS conference in Shanghai; when IHE’s first Ph.D. candidate enrolled in the new doctoral program we established with Saybrook University; when the first high
school Solutionary Teams, organized in Utah, presented their thoughtful, innovative answers to global problems; and as IHE students and alumni launched countless projects to make humane education effective common practice.
There is so much more to come. In 2014, we are planning the opening (in 2015) of the first humane education Solutionary School in New York City, a pre-K through 12 school where young people will learn how to solve the world’s greatest challenges in an educational environment that supports, nurtures
and advances their creativity, critical thinking capacities and collaborative skills. We’ll also be holding a Solutionary Congress with dozens of high school teams presenting their problem-solving ideas. And we’ll
be producing many more free resources, offering a new online course and creating a humane education e-book—all to support educators and citizens around the world who want to make a difference.
As I stood at that conference podium in New York City, I experienced an unexpected flood of emotions. In fact, there were few dry eyes in the auditorium, but not because attendees were sad. They were crying because they were inspired and full of joy. They saw that change really is possible, and that they are part of a movement. That move-ment, made possible by our generous, visionary donors, offers meaningful hope—along with practical and viable methods—to educate people to be the wise, dedicated, conscientious choicemakers and changemakers the world so
desperately needs. Thank you for paving the way.
