Key
The Elderly and Flu Season
Getting the flu can be a nasty experi-
ence, no matter what your age or gen-
eral health, and each year flu shots are a
major public health initiative. But, be-
cause of the risks to the elderly, senior
flu prevention is especially important.
While otherwise healthy adults can be
laid low by the flu for a full week, sen-
ior citizens are at risk for becoming
much sicker.
The elderly are more vulnerable,
once they get the flu, to develop com-
plications. Because the flu is really a
pretty severe illness, they may not have
as much of what we call ‘physiological
reserve’ as a younger adult. So, seniors
will feel very sick from a case of the flu
and that puts them at greater risk for
complications. Seniors in their 70's and
80's are at higher risk from the flu than
seniors in their sixties, because of de-
clining immunity to illnesses as they
age.
It’s not enough to simply stay away
from other people who feel sick. People
may be contagious one day before they
develop any symptoms, and for up to
five days after becoming sick. A big
concern is people don’t realize they
have the virus before they actually feel
sick.
Flu Symptoms
Fever
Chills
Runny or Stuffy Nose
Headache
Sore throat
Cough
Extreme Fatigue
Muscle Aches
Nausea and/or Vomiting
Diarrhea (sometimes pre-
sent, but rarely prominent)
During flu season, practicing good hy-
giene can help people avoid catching or
spreading the flu.
If you are experiencing flu symptoms
seek medical attention as soon as possi-
ble.

Tips For Healthy Aging
In today’s day and age we’re living much longer than ever before. Which is wonderful, but it also means taking care of our-
selves in a way seniors haven’t had to in the past. There’s no such thing as it’s too late! It’s never too late to start living a
healthier and more active lifestyle. The myth of ‘being too old’ to change just isn’t true.
Take A Walk If there’s one thing you can do today to improve your health it is exercise. It helps you to strengthen your muscles, which
will help in preventing injuries such as falling, lowers blood pressure and helps control weigh. It’s also been linked to a de-
creased risk of dementia. But don’t feel like you have to join a group or gym, even mild activities like gardening count.
Watch Your Weight We now know that people who eat at least 5 cups of fruit and veggies a day have lower blood pressure, lower cardiovascular
disease, lower risks of cancer they’ve a better immunity and usually a lower rate of diabetes. It’s one of the simplest things
you can do to transform your aging experience. So the next time you go to grab a snack grab an apple or a handful of carrots
instead!
Take Preventative Steps You don’t have to wait for something to happen before you do something go and do something about it. Be proactive, get a
yearly flu shot, get screened for Breast, Cervical, and Colon/Rectal Cancers. Keep a close watch on disease indicators such
as high blood pressure and diabetes. While you may not be able to prevent the disease entirely you can possibly prevent the
severity and disabilities that may happen from not treating the disease promptly.
Look On The Sunny Side Of Life Staying optimistic is a very big key. People who generally have a positive outlook on life have been linked to longer and
healthier lives. Decreased stress levels from spiritual activities such as mediation may be partly responsible. A 2004 study of
around 1,000 women and men found those who described themselves as optimistic were at a 23% lower risk of death of
heart failure than those classified as pessimist.
