Welcome to the 2015 Fleet Safety Conference
Safety is consistently one of the top concerns for fleet, risk and safety professionals, and senior management. Since being first held in 2012, the Fleet Safety Conference has addressed these safety issues head and on, and presents a multitude of solutions to help fleets operate more safely.
As a top priority for the country’s fleets, fleet safety transcends industry borders and job titles—reaching from fleet all the way to corporate boardrooms. You’ll find the agenda of this year’s conference addresses the needs of risk, safety, sales, human resources, and EHS professionals alike. We encourage you to connect with one another during the networking events, where you’ll have the opportunity to exchange best practices with others who share your commitment to fleet safety.
With support from the American Automotive Leasing Association (AALA) and a number of other sponsoring organizations, suppliers, and industry associations, we’ve worked tirelessly to provide a robust educational program to address the biggest challenges in the fleet safety domain. You’ll get the most up-to-date distracted driving and regulatory information on the market, learn new strategies for creating a company-wide safety culture, learn how to use technology to improve safety, and much more. Once again we’re offering a dedicated medium- and heavy-duty truck track specially crafted by Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT) magazine to focus on the needs of over-the-road and Class 8 fleets. A highlight of the conference is the AALA-created and sponsored Fleet Safety Award, which spotlights and honors the most successful safety programs in the nation. And this year, we’re also excited to present our first HDT Safety & Compliance Award.
We’d like to thank our attendees, speakers, and sponsors for joining and supporting us. We are certain you’ll return to your businesses armed with knowledge to better protect your company, your employees, and the general public all with the goal of making the road a safer place.

FEATURED SPEAKERSMake sure you don’t miss our four compelling and dynamic featured speakers. Each presenter brings new ideas and strategies to help implement, sustain, and promote a safety culture in your own work fleet.
TUESDAY, JULY 14 8:30AM - 9:20AM OPENING KEYNOTE ADDRESSHow to Create a Successful Corporate Safety Culture - Shell’s Journey to Goal ZeroIn a peer-to-peer presentation, Mike will share how Shell has used their lifesaving rules to create a pervasive corporate-wide safety culture. TUESDAY, JULY 14 12:30PM - 1:30PM LUNCH & GENERAL SESSIONHow EHS/Fleet Professionals Can Engage Senior Leadership to Provide Management and Financial Support for Corporate Safety ProgramsMcKillips will discuss how EHS and fleet managers can persuasively stress to senior management the importance of “proactive leadership” when it comes to fleet safety programs, before something tragic happens. Although it only takes one spectacular crash or lawsuit for safety to gain quick visibility in the eyes of senior leadership, there are many safety programs where leaders may be lukewarm to support a robust corporate safety program since no major “issues” have occurred.
TUESDAY, JULY 14 3:00PM - 4:00PM GENERAL SESSIONDeveloping Fleet Policies that Address the State of Legalization of Marijuana on Impaired DrivingBray will discuss how fleet and safety managers should address the risk of impaired driving due to marijuana use, as marijuana has been legalized in a number of Western U.S. states and medical marijuana use has increased across the country. Among the issues discussed, Bray will talk about how fleet policies address the use of marijuana, and what the intelligent guidelines are with regard to their employee drivers and marijuana use.

But no matter how diligent you are in managing these tasks, you can’t always be sure that all your bases are covered. That’s because incidents like camera violations, negligent maintenance, and other “hidden risks” can easily slip through the cracks of a standard safety program. During this presentation, these hidden risks will be identified and techniques provided to help ensure your safety program is optimized to mitigate their impact. Preparing for Upcoming FMCSA RulesNirvana CThere are several new regulations on the horizon as well as updates to existing regulations that are still “in the news.” It is always a challenge to stay abreast of the updates surrounding the regulatory requirements of motor carriers. Whether it is the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate, Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT), Motor Carrier Safety Fitness Determination (SFD), National Drug and Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse, and other various hot topics coming your way, it is important to stay ahead of the curve! How to Prevent Cheating on E-LogsNirvana CWith the deadline of the electronic log mandate looming on the not too distant horizon, fleet executives need to understand not only the letter of the law, but also how many attempt to skirt it. In this session, we will discuss the security requirements in the existing regulations and ELD proposal, as well as the policies and procedures management should have in place to catch (and prevent) the common methods that drivers (and supervisors) use to get around the rules.Presenter: Tom Bray, J.J. Keller & Associates
12:00pm - 1:30pm LUNCH & GENERAL SESSION: How EHS/Fleet Professionals Can Engage Senior Leadership to Provide Management and Financial Support for Corporate Safety ProgramsUtopia Ballroom Obtaining support for fleet safety programs from senior management can sometimes be easier said than done. Of course, it only takes one spectacular crash or lawsuit for safety to gain quick visibility in the eyes of senior leadership. However, there are many safety programs where leaders may be lukewarm to support a robust corporate safety program since no major “issues” have occurred. What is Your Liability Exposure for Reimbursed and Occasional Drivers?Nirvana AThe focus at most fleets is employees who are assigned company vehicles. But what about the occasional driver, such as the mail room employee making a quick delivery or admin running a company errand? What is your company’s liability exposure if they should be involved in a preventable accident? Could there be grounds for negligent entrustment? Learn what you can do to mitigate the potentiality of a lawsuit.Presenter: John Cruickshank, Alaniz, Schraeder, Linker, Farris & Mayes LLP
MVRs: Managing Driver Risk Nirvana CEmploying a risk management perspective, attendees will learn how to use driver violation records as leading indicators of future crashes. Historical MVR ROI examples will be provided along with methods to efficiently and effectively maximize use of this data.
