Growing recognition of Citizen Science
• Linking citizens to policy via science i.e., Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) partners with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Environment Agency, UK
• Developing strategic frameworks i.e., European Research Council (ERC) established in 2007 by European Commission for funding of scientific and technological research.
- Budget over €13 billion from 2014-2020 comes from Horizon2020
- ¾ projects involve Citizen Science
- Cutting-edge research of EU policy making include CS

• Citizens’ Observatory ENV.2012.6.5-1 Developing community-based environmental monitoring and information systems using innovative and novel earth observation applications.
5 FT7 Projects: Citclops, CITI-SENSE, COBWEB, Omniscientis and WeSenseIt
- Development of highly innovative monitoring technologies - Citizens’ empowerment: co-participation in community decision-
making and cooperative planning - IMPACT: citizens influence the environmental governance
processes providing models for decision-makers and facilitating connections between environmental governance, global policy objectives and citizens’ needs.
• CAPS – Collective Awareness Projects European Commission’s initiative on Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and Social Innovation.
A total of 12 projects from call 1 started in 2013 and still running and 22 projects from call 2 started in January 2016.
- Cover many topics: Open Democracy, Open Policy Making, Environmental action (Citizen Science), Internet Science, Collaborative Economy and Open Data.
- Designing online platforms to create awareness of sustainability
problems and offer collaborative solutions based on networks of people, ideas and sensors, thus enabling new forms of social innovation.

• Science With And For Society (SWAFS) European Commission’s programme for addressing societal challenges tackled by Horizon 2020, building capacity and developing innovative ways of connecting science to society.
i.e., DITOs Doing It Together Science Horizon2020
- Allows all societal actors (researchers, citizens, policy makers, business, third sector organizations etc.) to work together during the research and innovation (R&I) process
- Inclusive approach to Research and Innovation known as
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)
- IMPACT: designing and implementing R&I policy that will engage society, increase access to scientific results, ensure gender equality, consider ethics and foster science education – RRI THEMES.
