Essential Question: Why is dividing the same as multiplying by the reciprocal of that number?
9-x: Handling Fractions
Throughout this section, we will be focusing on the four operations with fractions.
YOU ARE NOT TO USE A CALCULATORto simplify these expressions It’ll be important when we start dealing
with variables (which can’t be solved with a calculator)

Multiplying Fractions To multiply fractions, multiply the
numerators together and multiply the denominators together.
You can simplify at any point once you have it set as multiplication
Examples: 3 4 12
7 5 35
5 2 5
6 3 9

Adding/Subtracting Fractions Before you can add or subtract fractions,
the fractions must have a common denominator.
After they have a common denominator, simply add or subtract the numerator. The easiest way to get a common
denominator is to multiply each term by the opposite denominator

1 5
8 6
