A farmer one morning notices that two of his pregnant cows have just aborted their calves.

What’s the story?

In rural communities like the Masai we met in Ngorongoro, illnesses in livestock are taken more seriously than even their human population.

So the farmer immediately calls the community extension staff to report what happened and ask for assistance.

The extension staff visits the boma to see what

has happened and realizes that this could be a contagious

disease that could affect other farms in the community

as well…

…so he picks up his cell phone and calls an old friend

Hey, why don’t you check on your

dashboard? Something’s not going well.

The District Veterinary Officer receives an email (or an SMS) letting her know that an event

has occurred that could signify an outbreak.

Extension staff’s phone number is right there so she can at least give

him a call and say that she’s going to visit in a few days.

Meanwhile, the extension staff can always call the hotline to check the status of the report.

If the district veterinary officer does have the time to investigate this potential outbreak, all of the information that she needs to do contact tracing is right here.

She can see what are the common gathering points that are potentially impacted.

She has phone numbers of the people that she needs to call to set appointments.

The goal is that as she continues her contact tracing investigation and happens to find that there are other farms where the disease has spread, more info will be added to this dashboard that will show the history of this outbreak and the contact transmission chain.
