Message from the ES Program Chair
Carla D’Antonio, Ph.D "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
-Nelson Mandela
Welcome graduates, family members and friends. It is a pleasure to celebrate with you the accomplishments of this amazing group of students and to share
in the joy of a job well done. Today’s graduates join a distinguished cadre of UCSB Environmental Studies alumni…now over 6,000 of you…each with your own story and path. As environmental studies majors you are bound together by your shared concern for the health of our planet, by your commitment to bettering the world we live in, to preserving its beauty and resources for future generations, to ensuring equal access by all to a healthy environment, and to finding creative solutions to the many, many challenges that face us. Commencement means beginning. While leaving behind the world you have known for the past 4 or 5 years, each of you are joining a larger family…the UCSB-‐Gaucho-‐ES family. This family is here to help support you and guide you as you search for a career path, pursue your dreams, try new things and search for your own way to helping to ensure sustainable living on this fragile planet. While we are proud of you, and proud to have helped you find your own wings, we are also grateful to you for all that you have done for us. So on behalf of the faculty, lecturers and staff of environmental studies, I want to thank you for your fresh energy, your creativity, your perseverance and your optimism. It is these things that help to keep us inspired and keep us in turn optimistic that we as a global society have a bright future. Keep in touch through our newsletter, our friends and alumni list serves and in whatever way you can… share with us the path that you create for yourself. Go forth and seize the day!

Melvyn Manalis
Dr. Mel Manlis has been teaching at the Environmental Studies Program for over four decades. With a background in physics, Mel’s research interests surround the development of quantifiable sustainability measures and renewable energy. His research on wind energy and collaboration with Zond Wind Power led to the creation of Environmental Studies’ first endowed chair. The Dehlsen Chair. For over 45 years, Mel has taught over 6,000 Environmental Studies majors through a variety of energy and non-‐energy related courses. In addition to developing ES’s pioneer course on Energy and the Environment, and a course on Renewable energy, Dr. Manalis is credited with creating the courses Industrial Ecology, and Quantitative Thinking in Environmental Studies. During the 1980’s, Mel led a seminal delegation of wind energy experts to advise the Chinese government on how to initialize a large-‐scale wind energy effort. This project has become the foundation of China’s rapid advancement in wind power development. In addition, Mel conducted the first wind energy study of Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California and the nascent study of solar energy applications for the California Energy Commission following the 1973 oil embargo. Mel currently serves as a member of the Institute for Energy Efficiency’s Economics and Policy Solutions Group. He will remain working as a research scientist with the Environmental Studies Program upon his retirement.

Richard W. Halsey is an educator, photographer, writer, and the director of the California Chaparral Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, research, and educational organization dedicated to the preservation of native shrubland habitats throughout the world, and supporting the creative spirit as inspired by the natural environment. Rick is a graduate from the
Environmental Studies class of 1978 with a double major in Anthropology. After his BA, Rick obtained a teaching credential in life and physical sciences from UC Berkeley, and a master’s degree in education from Cal State University, San Diego. He taught high school science for over twenty years in both public and private schools. He was honored as the Teacher of the Year for San Diego City Schools in 1991. He also received a prestigious U.S. Dept of Education Christa Mcauliffe Fellowship for innovation in education in 1994, which funded him to take a year off from teaching during which he wrote a book entitled, Fire, Chaparral and Survival in Southern California. Shortly thereafter he left traditional education to devote full time to the preservation of and appreciation for the chaparral environment, California's most extensive native plant community. He teaches natural history throughout the state including a unique Chaparral Naturalist Certification Program. This program brings educators to the chaparral to experience its sights, sounds, and smells first hand. He is an engaging and sought after speaker who has delivered more than 400 educational presentations about the chaparral ecosystem and wildfire over the past ten years. He also works as a consultant on wildfire issues including doing pro-‐bono work with county and community organizations throughout Southern California devising wildfire protection plans. Mr. Halsey also works with the San Diego Museum of Natural History, provides living history presentations as Grizzly Adams, and partners with excellent attorneys to provide a voice for the chaparral when gentle persuasion is not enough.
