Hello my name is Timmy Dinnen, I am a second year Arts student. I am running for the position of UCCSU Entertainments Officer for the Year 2013-‐2014. I currently hold the position of disability officer for the Students Union. This year I have helped students with various difficulties, such as proving them with training involving special software as well as informing them of the various services around UCC, which enables them to enjoy a better all-‐round college experience. This year I introduced the UCC college road dog, which has aided in providing the Irish Dog guide Association for the Blind with essential valuable funding through your kind donations. I have outlined below, my manifesto which I intend to see through if I am elected to the position of UCC Entertainments Officer:
Integration: I aim to diversify the Entertainment activities throughout the different campuses, which UCC students attend. I plan also to include activities for International Students and Erasmus students as well as Mature Students. UCC is our community and if I am elected I endeavour to provide accessible entertainment to all members of our community.
Entertainment during college year: I propose to bring live music; DJ and live bands, to create a more social atmosphere throughout the college year. This is an initiative to support college bands and also to introduce a more relaxed and social atmosphere around campus, for those who wish to escape the monotony of the different Q levels. I hope for these to take place both indoor and outdoor, dependent on our unpredictable Irish weather.
Expansion of UCC Christmas Day: I hope to introduce a 3 day celebration of Christmas around campus, including Fancy Dress, Santa Appearance and lots more a activities both in the New and Old Bar. Also as, Christmas is a joyous occasion I would like to see the Student of UCC enjoying it in style, with a Christmas Ball Celebration. This would be formal wear ball and all profits would go to charitable causes.
UCC Olympia: I propose to introduce a UCC Olympics, where numerous games and activities will take place both on campus and the maradyke, for people to display their full athletic prowess. This is intended to be a fun competition, with emphasis on the inclusion of every student, no matter their athletic or physical capabilities.
Study Month relaxation: I propose to introduce activities around campus that can help all students relieve exam stress leading up to the ever-‐ menacing exams in May. These include having activities such as bouncing castles; blow up slides as well as buckaroos competitions. We have seen these activities as a way of stress reduction in big corporations such as Google. I endeavour to bring this to you, the Students of UCC, to help ye all relieve some of that much mounted stress which accumulates around study month.
Spring Concert: I propose to bring a major spring concert to the Students of UCC. This will be an outdoor event, where Students can revel in hearing some of the best national and international talent. I want this Concert to be up there with the best in Ireland, and something which UCC can take pride in. International Acts such as Artic Monkeys, Labrinth will be and many more. This will be a focal point in the calendar of any UCC student. Surrounding activities to this concert will include an outdoor barbeque and various entertainments around campus.
UCC Saints Patricks Celebration: A day to celebrate our Irish heritage within UCC and also for the Erasmus and International students to get a sample of the “craic” us Irish are renowned for. This will take place on the days arriving up to Saint Patricks Day. Activities will be held around campus, such as spud on spoon running and sack racing competitions bringing us back to our own days of youth as well as celebrating our Irish heritage. Live local Irish bands and D.J’s will play it out around UCC, playing the best of all things Irish.
More Acts, Performers and Personalities. Ever think that UCC is sorely missing out on regular acts and bands, as your friends in other colleges discuss the revelry of the last weeks entertainment. Well I propose to bring far more bands, performers and personalities to UCC. These can occur in Devere Hall, or in either the new or old bar depending on popularity. It is my plan to hold at least one fun and popular event each week; whether that be a mass-‐water fight on campus or the rubber bandits performing live in Devere hall. I have proven my track record on this, as my services were collaborated with that of UCC disability in bringing the hugely successful Des Bishop to UCC’s Devere Hall.
Expansion of Entertainments Team: I propose that the Entertainments team is expanded by adding a full dedicated promo section to ensure that every one, of you the students of UCC, are kept up to date and well-‐informed off all the happenings on our campus. This will include more integration and communication with UCC societies, to ensure they can provide the best entertainments for their members. I also aim to liaise with you, the students of UCC, to ensure we have the events that the people want.
Other Entertainment Activities: For the many students who stay around UCC for the weekend, I propose we have table quizzes and karaoke etc around the UCC area, for people to come and enjoy and make new friends.
Halloween: I plan to introduce a bus tour of all the spooky sites in Cork, this will include a spot off at the ever popular nightmare realm as well as having an official Halloween best dressed competition in one of the UCC bars.
“Night at the Dogs”: A night reserved for UCC students at the Curaheen racetrack.
Record Breaking Attempts-‐ try and get UCC into the Guinness book of records as often as possible. This is an attempt to promote our college spirit. And make campus a fun and bubbling place to be around.
I endeavour to Protect and develop the social experience of RAG Week.
I hope to establish an open line of communication including the circulation of a questionnaire for UCC students to have their say as to what they would like to see around out campuses. If elected I am your entertainments officer, I work on your behalf.
I endeavour to Protect and develop the social experience of RAG Week.
Conclusion:
If elected, I promise to do the job to the best of my ability and stay committed to the promises I make throughout my campaign. I truly believe I am the best candidate for UCC, based on my
experiences and desire. So on that ballot paper remember to vote Timmy Dineen number 1 for Entertainments Officer. Thank you.
