DEAR ABBY: A friend I reallylike has been extremely helpfulbaby-sitting my 4-month-oldson every once in a while. Theproblem is, she informed methat she rubs his gums and letshim chew on her fingers. I findthis gross and strange. Cleanfingers or not, I’d prefer shenot do this. She only has him acouple of hours at a time, and he

has teething toys.Am I overreact-

ing? If not, how doI politely informmy friend that I’drather she not puther fingers in mybaby’s mouth? Ican’t think of a wayto explain it thatwouldn’t offendher. — OFF LIMITSIN IDAHO

DEAR OFF LIM-ITS: What your

friend is doing is neither grossnor strange. She was probablytrying to soothe your teethingbaby who was showing signsof discomfort. Her fingers mayhave been more comfortableto chew on than the hard toy. However, you are the parentand if you prefer no more fin-gers in your baby’s mouth, youshould tell that to your friendand she shouldn’t take offense.

DEAR ABBY: I often havethought about cooking foodand taking it to neighbors whenthey experience a death in thefamily or a new baby, etc. Iknow when my parents passedaway, kind relatives and neigh-bors brought us so much foodwe didn’t know what to do withit all. But it was greatly appre-ciated and helped us more thanthey could ever know.

My problem is I tend to over-think this and then not followthrough. (What if they don’t eatmeat? What if they’re on spe-cial diets? What if they alreadyhave a lot of food or are aller-gic to something?) How can I

offer something useful withoutknowing their eating habits? Ihave considered giving a restau-rant gift card, but that doesn’tseem as personal.

It seems years ago peoplenever put so much thought intomaking a dish and taking it tothe neighbors. Can you giveme some insight? — WANTS TOHELP IN MICHIGAN

DEAR WANTS TO HELP: I don’tthink you are overthinking atall. The questions in your mindare intelligent ones. That’s whyyou should pick up the phoneand tell the families that youintend to bring them a gift offood, but before you do, youwould like to know if they haveany dietary restrictions. (Per-haps they already have a freezerfull of cakes, pies and cookiesand would enjoy somethingmore solid — like a casserole?)I am sure your thoughtfulnesswould be appreciated if youcalled to offer your condolencesand asked what they could use.

CONFIDENTIAL TO MY READ-ERS: A word to the wise: Ifyou plan to toast the New Yeartonight, please appoint a desig-nated driver. And on this nightespecially, designated driversshould remember to drivedefensively. To one and all, ahappy, healthy New Year! —LOVE, ABBY
