Introduction
• The future of data backup/restore and archive is OBJECT STORAGE
– lowest cost per TB with lowest TCO over three years; traditional block storage on dedup disk is expensive
– linearly scales to multiple petabytes
• >90% of all data in existence today was generated in the last two years
• >80% of new data generated is unstructured
– traditional block storage on dedup disk cannot scale cost-effectively
• IBM COS with erasure coding (or information dispersal algorithm – IDA) and geo-dispersal of data offers enterprise customers massively enhanced security and protection against data theft and breaches
• IBM COS with Storage Director® (SD) is faster than any on-premise dedup disk backup solution like Data Domain, and any public cloud solution like AWS, Azure and Google

• Does the customer have a multi-platform, multi-OS IT environment?
• Does the customer have any proprietary platforms and wishes to share backup infrastructure with his open environment?
• Does the customer have a large data backup and/or replication requirement?
• Does the customer have long-term archival needs for data for regulatory or other reasons?
• Is the customer transporting tapes from one location to another?
• Is the customer looking to reduce or eliminate tape from his current environment?

Ideal Targets for Storage Director + ICOS
Current Backup Solutions Current IT Environment
16 www.tributary.com
• Ability to separate data into pools and apply different protection policies such as retention, replication, movement to lower cost media such as IBM COS, tape, NAS or public cloud for archival
• Offer customers the fastest performing backup solution per node in the market and therefore shrink backup windows and lower cost
• Eliminate slow restores due to need for rehydration of dedup data upon restores
• Eliminate performance degradation as disk fills up; SD + ICOS would not see performance degradation until disk capacity exceeds 96 percent
• Eliminate time spent on garbage cleaning; this could be 1-3 hours a day in a Data Domain
• Achieving data reduction of both data at rest and in flight without the inherent negatives of dedup (poor backup and restore performance, no capability to tier, cost of proprietary disk etc.)
• Ability to work with backup applications (such as Spectrum Protect, Commvault, Netbackup, Veeam etc.) to design policies utilizing incremental or change data backup only with periodic full backups for maximum efficiency
• Offering customers a cost effective, highly flexible, scalable, policy based backup solution utilizing object storage technology that can be customized to fit their environment as opposed to “one medium (dedup disk) fits all” philosophy of EMC Data Domain.
For any given customer environment, Storage Director + ICOS can be configured to offer the optimal continuous availability backup, replication and DR solution which results in the lowest cost, highest performance and reliability backup solution for that customer. The built-in method Storage Director uses for data reduction is hardware enabled LZ compression with redundant secondary software based compression and AES 256 bit encryption coupled with WAN optimization and latency management for replication. Additionally, ICOS uses erasure coding and object storage for enhanced security and massive scalability.

Storage Director + IBM COS
Tributary Storage Director
Redefines availability, security and economics of data storage.
For data backup and archive environments with Data Domain presently, a performance front-end ingestion and caching solution called Storage Director can be configured
Storage Director (SD) has rapid ingestion capabilities with caching
SD will present a native target to Spectrum Protect
SD will ingest data from Spectrum Protect, Commvault, Netbackup or Veeam at up to 10.4 GB per second (or 37.4TB an hour) and restore at speeds up to 9.6GB per second (or 34.6 TB per hour) per node
Backup data will then be streamed to IBM cloud Object Storage post process for archive
