1.Introduction- WVI
Founded in 1950, as Christian relief and developmentorganization
A partnership of Inter dependent national offices sharing acommon mission to end suffering, poverty and Injustice sothat children and poor communities can realise their God-given potential In 2003, WVI: served 100 million people Worked 99 countries Largest child sponsorship organization =Over 2.2 millionsponsor children Raised $1.25 Billion for its work Employed 20,000 staff members In 2003 , WV was the largest food aid handler in the world,delivered 739,000 Metric tones of Food to 7.1 Millionhungry people in 30 countries.

Ethiopia- Facts & Figures Ethiopia=Horn of Africa=70 Million (2nd)=83.3% Resides in Rural areas (2003) In terms of broad social indicators or narrow economic aggregates, Ethiopia is
one of the poorest countries. The low level of social and economic development is also reflected in thestructure of the economy, in which agriculture constitutes about 50 per cent ofGDP and around 85 per cent of employment.GDP-composition by sector (2000) compared SSA Agriculture: 52.3% (17%) Industry: 12% (31%) Services: 35.7% (53%) Social service coverage: very low i.e.
Health services =51%Safe water =32%Sanitary facilities =19%Primarily enrollment ratio=50% for boys and 45% for girls (2002)
To meet some of the felt needs of the people (mainly to severe famines & poverty) =Local & InternationalNGOS began 1960s The number of NGOs increased=Currently 458 NGOs are registered with the Ministry of Justice (242 localand 216 international) .The sector focus= a shift from relief to development especial emphasis on foodSecurity Currently 1200 projects =agriculture, health and other rural development sectors =Budget (1996-2000)=$ one billion=B/n 1/5 to international aid resource mobilized by NGOs

Started in 1971; Office established in 1975;
Massive relief in 1984 1986 Rehabilitation phase (1986-89) Development phase (1990 onwards)
Phase I (1990-97): WV owned multi-sector projects; Phase II (1998-2002): Facilitative role for a single goal of foodsecurity; MED, GAD, environment concerns integrated in theprogram.
In 2003, WVE: Worked 28 ADPs of Six Regions Second largest national office next to India =Over 120, 000thousands sponsor children Budget $20 Million for its work Employed over 500 staff members at head office and ADPs

Major food security activities undertaken by WVE under this sector are:
Introduction and dissemination of improved crops seeds (focus onhorticulture)
Support soil and water conservation and afforestation practices Support pest and disease control program for crops and livestock Conduct small-scale irrigation developments Support development of water harvesting techniques Support forage and pasture development Facilitate access to improved farm tools Provision of improved breeds of animals including Apiculture Support artificial insemination for better livestock production Construction of veterinary posts/clinics Organize experience sharing visits Provide training / awareness creation on various agricultural topics
